Inspiral was pretty handy in the Sun Chariot (i.e. not out the back) – my pet gripe has always been why do jockeys think that a hold up ride automatically equals I have to drop them out the back!
To me it simply means that you don’t want to be hitting the front too soon…..you can do that from 4th or 5th just as well as from the very back – unless they go a crazy mental pace up front, Dettori has no need to be sitting out the back in a 12 runner field around a tight inside turf course on firm ground.
Two of her three siblings won at 10F and they were both by Dansili and we know how well Frankel can impart stamina in his offspring, so I don’t think Dettori needs to ride her as if she is a doubtful stayer – in the Sun Chariot, the runner up was a notable 10f horse and Inspiral clocked faster sectionals for each of the last 4F.
Dettori needs to keep it simple, he is drawn in 6 (of 12) so if he can drop in like Moore did (who was actually drawn 7 of 11) and be on or one off the rail and then be positioned 3rd or 4th off the final turn……..very much easier said than done I know but thats why he’s classed as a big time jockey who excels in these moments.

Harrington has said she will think twice about taking horses out there in future.
What a farce. I’m glad I did not watch it now.

Fev Rover
Made his owners and Richard Fahey a pretty penny when he was sold abroad. His new handlers wasted no time acclimatising him. And whilst a horse named after a northern Rugby football team will have made but a few ripples crossing the Atlantic, His touchdowns have been spectacular. Winning and then winning with some ease latest booking his place here and the ripples have become a wave.
May not cope with the next step up here but will still hold his own.
Has local knowledge now and a speculative each way will hurt no-one.November 4, 2023 at 10:06 #1669146Michael tabors reaction said it all. Strange I think he called it but the look on his face. He was not happy.
November 4, 2023 at 11:58 #1669191Anyone catch O’Briens interview post Juvenile Turf LOL.
Delighted for the lads but listen, devastated for the lads and listen, delighted for the lads.
November 4, 2023 at 12:47 #1669205Although I agree with you LD, that more horses would be capable of racing more prominently at a longer trip.Doing so would also be chancing not settling. Whether a horse who has been running at a mile stays 10f depends just as much on how it settles as it does breeding… And Inspiral has been held up towards the back in most of her races at a mile – which is often a trait of a horse who can take a hold if seeing too much daylight. Yes, she was a bit closer last time, which is a little more encouraging of her being able to race more prominently today over the extended trip. However, she still took a keen hold there, as – according to Racing Post comments – she has on 4 of her last 7 starts all at a mile. When having her first run at 10f her chance of lasting home if taking a “keen hold” are much less.
The reason connections probably took a chance on racing more prominently there was (if I remember rightly) a fairly strong tail wind which is very much against hold up horses at Newmarket.
Then there is what she will need to do in order to get that more prominent posi’. Unlikely to be quite as simple as “keeping it simple”. It may have been intentional, but in the past she’s often been slowly away. Even if getting away well today she will probably need to be (to a certain degree) set alight more than she has in the past to get a more prominent spot… And once racing fairly fast it is questionable whether one known to often take a hold at a mile would settle at 10f. Especially if the pace was then eased down to a slow 10f pace.
The more horses are in front of Inspiral early the more cover and the less “light” she’ll see and the more likely she is to settle here. Of course that poses its own problems. There is only a very short straight to make ground up and unless they’ve gone quick it’s hard to make up enough ground on horses who are themselves quickening – even for a horse with such a great turn of foot as Inspiral… And if getting a strongly run 10f it won’t exactly play to her strengths (speed) either.
That said, it is possible she’s showing more restraint at home and that could be the reason she’s going for the longer trip – we don’t know. But from all we do know, if I were connections I’d try and settle Inspiral at least in mid-div if not in the third quarter. If slowly away again, she’ll have to be dropped out the back and sit and hope.
I’d have probably backed her if going for the Mile option.
Value Is EverythingNovember 4, 2023 at 13:28 #1669217Somewhat ironic that the vets scratched the wrong O’Brien runner as the 2nd Mountair Beer picked up an undisplaced condylar fracture (I wonder if they even trotted him up beforehand).
Thankfully the prognosis is only a month or so in a cast to fix the problem……he can be marked up even more for that run.
November 4, 2023 at 15:22 #1669247Agree that getting her to settle is paramount but that can be done closer to the pace just as well as out the back and given her draw (6) of 12 Dettori can still get her tucked in in 4th or 5th with a horse on his outside to give her the cover that would give her the best chance of settling.
It would really be annoying to me if she ends up being 2nd or 3rd coming with a fast finishing run from the back and Dettori then trots out the ‘we had to come from too far back off and they didn’t really go that quick’ excuse.
If he was drawn out wide then you don’t have that much choice but to sit out the back and hope they go too fast and you can pick them up late on but his draw gives him the option to be a little further forward and not be out of his ground toward the back.
November 4, 2023 at 18:36 #1669288I know Cody’s Wish was the best horse in the race but that was a brilliant ride.
November 4, 2023 at 18:39 #1669289I can’t believe it took so long for them to realise there was a stewards enquiry.
November 4, 2023 at 19:09 #1669300Fingers crossed for Inspiral. Love her to win if all goes well for her.
Warm Heart is probably more bomb proof as for getting in the first three.Value Is EverythingNovember 4, 2023 at 19:10 #1669301With the Moonlight for me
November 4, 2023 at 19:15 #1669303What a finish!! Warm Heart had such a good position I thought didn’t think Inspiral had a hope of getting there.
November 4, 2023 at 19:17 #1669304Brilliant, no bet but everything went exactly as I hoped.
Value Is EverythingNovember 4, 2023 at 19:21 #1669306Brilliant rides from Moore and dettori
Still the best two big race jocks
Inspiral was much the best filly, they didn’t go quick and she’s still picked them up
November 4, 2023 at 19:35 #16693131940 ish

Goodnight olive
WinNovember 4, 2023 at 19:36 #1669314Not a strongly run race but I don’t think it was that slow either.
Had they gone very fast it would’ve been more of a test of stamina and not a test of speed that Inspiral wants at this distance.
Had they gone slow she’d have had a lot to do from so far back even with her speed. But they went just fast enough for Inspiral to have enough speed to get there.Value Is Everything - AuthorPosts
