I can manage the ultimate prevention measure against binge drinking these days, I generally fall asleep after a couple of pints! Normally a couple of decent pints it has to be said, favoured tipple I.P.A.

During the Six Nations I can turn into the lovechild of George Best and Ollie Reed, other times I won’t even think about booze for a fortnight. Most of the time I’m somewhere in the middle. Healthy or not I don’t know but it works for me.

Drink sir, is a great provoker of three things….nose-painting, sleep and urine. Lechery, sir, it provokes, and unprovokes; it provokes the desire but takes away the performance

Nose painting may refer to the red nosed drinker, which in
turn brings to mind; Rumpole of the Bailey and the highly proofed Reggie Bosanquet. What absolute heroes !

Back in the late 80’s, when I lived in Cardiff the pub was, almost, at the bottom of my garden and it was definitely my second (arguably first) home – so much so if I missed an evening they would ring to check I was OK.

Regular lock-ins, two or three times a week, and often back the next morning at 06:00 for a pre-golf breakfast.

If there wasn’t a pub lock-in I’d have private “lock-in” at home with one of the barmaids before she went back home to her husband and kids – those were the days.

When the landlord eventually moved on, it wasn’t the same and one night I was over there, out of habit, where I had about 7-8 pints and I wasn’t enjoying it and it dawned on me I was drinking all that amount and it wasn’t affecting me – so I stopped drinking that night.

    I didn’t touch a drop for about 5 years.

Now the only time I’ll generally have a drink is on holiday and then it’s only a glass of wine with dinner or the odd G&T. Away from holidays I may have a G&T about once a month.

To be honest I don’t miss the drinking at all, I can still have a good night out with soft drinks, with the added entertainment of watching those who cannot take their booze.

I seem to have been knackered. My man dancing is much faster than that.

Paul a great tale, and last night I watched Raiders of the lost Arc ( Ronald Lacey the Nazi Major – I often used to spy lost in thought, studying form sat at a shelf in a Victoria bookie) followed by John Le Carre’s famous interview with Mark Lawson. I’d seen both before so lubrication helped to re-enjoy and see in a slightly different light. I can drop drink in a minute and often do – AND WILL

Raise taxes on booze and you will just see the black market flooded with dangerous cheap alcohol products.
Same as smoking, every town and city now has that dodgy shop that sells counterfeit tobacco (that has god knows what in it) under the counter. They regularly get busted but instantly carry on selling.

Raising taxes on products to protect health is flawed as the black market replacements will be far more dangerous for health but people will still buy them as they are cheap.
