Yes. S&P moved UK down one notch. Now there are two countries in the world above them: Germany on AAA and USA on AA+. If you are in the business of buying government bonds Germany definitely looks the best bet.
June 27, 2016 at 20:58 #1253403Britain’s AAA rating now gone.

We got batteried
June 27, 2016 at 22:39 #1253406Yes. S&P moved UK down one notch.
Two actually MV.
Although S&P did say they’re more concerned with the SNP. That to leave the EU is difficult enough for Britain without the added problem of doing it at a time when the UK seems to be breaking up – makes things a lot more difficult.
Value Is EverythingJune 27, 2016 at 22:51 #1253407A few large bets sent into the market to manipulate the price, and psychologically implant into the electorate that remain was a done deal.
Doesn’t make sense Cav.
It was actually in the “In” campaign’s best interests to make it sound like a close run thing, because it was always going to be more difficult for them to get their supporters out if people thought it a “done deal”.
May be it was Farage’s mates betting?

June 28, 2016 at 19:02 #1253451So whats happened up North, Drone?
I thought 13 years of Labour had fixed its post industrial heartland.
Ha! pissed-off its post-industrial heartland more like. Little was done to address their needs by ‘New Labour’ who were just intent on wooing floating ‘Middle England’ Conservative/Liberal voters: an intention that met with success
As Steeplechasing points out, a significant number of votes cast for Leave weren’t due to a hatred of the EU, more a hatred of ‘the establishment’ and this referendum was the first time since at least the second Blair government that the working-class, conservative (small c) Old Labour voter has had the chance to make his/her voice heard. A large disenfranchised demographic that no one has cared about
Turnouts at general elections in those Labour heartlands that voted emphatically for Leave – the North East, West Midlands and South Wales have declined significantly over the last twenty years or so; this time they were very high, which is very telling
It was the grubby, forgotten post-industrial northern towns that voted Leave: the comfortably cosmopolitan cities – Newcastle, Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield (not quite but nearly) and the prosperous New Labour/Liberal town/city of Harrogate and York (boy am I fortunate to live here) who voted for Remain
The sad fact (if fact it will turn out to be) is that those downtrodden Old Labour voters with a legitimate grievance who were responsible for swinging the result to Leave will be the ones who are hit hardest by the likelihood of a ferociously right-wing government-in-the-offing
Interesting times ahead, for those of us who live the life of Reilly, for whom it doesn’t matter a jot if we’re in or out, governed by right or left
For many though the maxim “cursed to live in interesting times” applies
June 28, 2016 at 19:15 #1253453I’ve long since stopped having “fun bets” (discipline) and “spot-laying” (poor-house fast track) so I had no financial interest in the outcome of Brexit at all.
No fun bets for me either and it’s a good while now since I had any bet on horseracing
The House of Commons is my new Cheltenham
It’s great: political tipsters are even worse then racing tipsters; and millions believe the former, only thousands the latter
June 28, 2016 at 20:34 #1253457Drone,
How do you see the party leadership ‘battles’ panning out?
And, crap leader though he appears to be, I suspect you would not fault Mr Corbyn’s tenacity.

June 29, 2016 at 13:54 #1253480I think the Conservatives will see sense and elect Theresa May, and I hope so too. Although she sided with Remain she’s fairly eurosceptic and strikes me as the calm sort ideally suited to unifying the the more vociferous Remain/Leave factions of the party. Johnson is too divisive and behind that veneer of genial buffoonery lies a thoroughly unpleasant man
Betting-wise there’s no value in either at present though if May drifts to over 5/2 I might step in
As for the Labour Party I suspect Corbyn will be re-elected and then the party will splinter. That being the case then Dan Jarvis at ~8/1 makes some appeal as next leader of a New New Labour and I think he’s keeping his head down and mouth shut until the smelly stuff has been washed off the fan
My long-time wish is for women to take over the western world. Clinton, May and Merkel will probably balls it all up like the men but at least give them a chance to prove me wrong

It’s interesting that many people have accused Boris of using the referendum to bolster his own political ambition and that may well be the case.
However the same criticism can be made of Mrs May – she is a Eurosceptic at heart yet decided to join the remain camp and apart from a token speech, she took no active part in the campaign and thus risked upsetting nobody and covered her own back in the process. I wouldn’t trust her as far as I could throw her – she is typical of the modern career politician with no clear cut principals or belief – she would be another Bliar or Cameron.
An even worse prospect is the bible thumping Stephen Crabb – how could a man who talks to a sky fairy be trusted to run the country. This is a man who blames secularists for causing Islamic extremism and says homosexuality is an “illness that can be cured” – a Trump with kid gloves.
If he makes the final cut I’ll be voting for Liam Fox.
As to Labour I’m wetting myself laughing – I really do hope Corbyn continues to dig his heels in and remain, firstly he is the best asset the Conservative party has, as he is unelectable plus if he carries on as he is the Labour party will completely self-destruct and that would make me even happier than last weeks referendum result – which is the second greatest political event in my lifetime.
June 29, 2016 at 16:10 #1253486What a shame the SNP won’t field candidates across the UK. Sturgeon is the only leader left with any degree of credibility. If they suspended their key objective for a few years, she could probably knock the country back into shape in fairly short order
Totally agree – I’d vote for her in a heartbeat. Whilst the country is dragged down into the mud by all the uncertainty we face a summer of more internal political wrangling by self-serving, ambitious vermin like BoJo. Sturgeon stands out as a beacon of hope for Scots and there she is right now out in Brussels fighting for her country whilst our lot bicker and posture.
There is no plan for the future, there never was, apart from Boris. He will become the next PM and then backtrack and convince us that we didn’t really want to leave the EU and we are better of in it. He will go back to Europe with a proposal on an immigration cap and then take this back to a UK drowning in a stagnant pool of depression and disunity. A general election or second referendum will follow and we will stay in the EU enraging UKIP and 40% of the population. What a country.

June 29, 2016 at 16:52 #1253487Woe is me
Woe r us
I don’t know much about May or Merkel, but I suspect Mrs Clinton is the luckiest presidential candidate in history with just Trump as a rival (unless the GOP mange to sack him pre-convention). I don’t care for Hillary at all.
With each passing hour, I speculate with steadily increasing wonder just what might be going on in Mr Corbyn’s head
June 29, 2016 at 16:55 #1253488Don’t think Sturgeon has a chance as Scotland is still part of the UK:
“Spain on Wednesday said it was opposed to negotiating potential EU membership with Scotland, which is seeking to remain within the European bloc after Britain voted last week to leave.
“I want to be very clear … Scotland does not have the competence to negotiate with the European Union. Spain opposes any negotiation by anyone other than the government of United Kingdom,” Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy told a news conference following a summit of European leaders in Brussels.
“I am extremely against it, the treaties are extremely against it and I believe everyone is extremely against it. If the United Kingdom leaves… Scotland leaves,” he also said.”

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
