Why does Australia produce so many good sprinters?
March 26, 2011 at 13:17 #347339Won again yesterday pulling up!
March 26, 2011 at 18:37 #347371Are connections planning on bringing him to England for a real test against real sprinters does anyone know? I know Michael Houdalakis says he might sent J J for the July Cup after sending him to Singapore but I’d like to see this sprinter come too, especially after Nicconi last year.

They’ve said no – maybe next year but she won’t travel this season.
March 26, 2011 at 18:48 #347377Ah,shame that, hopefully we still see some globetrotters coming over, oh and by "real sprinters" I didnt mean that to seem as i meant Australia dont have good sprinters, because they do, but i meant as in the best in the world i.e Kingsgate Native.

I don’t know a lot about sprinting but everything I’ve read suggests Australia has the best sprinters in the world! But it would be nice to see them over to take on the best in the northern hemisphere.

I think that the horses running say 2nd,3rd,4th to her would go well in some of the big sprints there. Her next start in Sydney the prizemoney of the race is about 630 000 pounds so when they can pick off that kind of money you can see why they dont want to travel just yet.

They do have the best sprinters in the world, but many of the best Australian-breds right now don’t race in Australia, and this has been the case in the past 8 years when horses based in Hong Kong have run riot (Sacred Kingdom, Silent Witness, Absolute Champion, and now Rocket Man in Singapore).
Hay List aside, there just isn’t any strong competition for her. As Bart Cummings mentioned, the sprinting ranks down under are a bit thin right now. But her trainer knows that he has to travel abroad at some point, putting up the HK Sprint this December as a possible first overseas trip.
But despite the relative lack of sprinting class in Australia right now, even observers in Hong Kong and Europe are comfortable rating her the best in the world right now. But she’ll need to prove it definitively vs. Rocket Man and others at some point.

Whilst it may not be a vintage year in Australian sprinting, you have a freak that makes good horses look 2nd rate, remember Choisir and Starspangledbanner were no stars over here, both were very good horses but Black Caviar would make them look 2nd and third rate as well.

Presto you say HK is the powerhouse for Aus bred sprinters and has been in the last 8 years. While all the horses you mentioned mostly got their reputation running in HK and Sing.In the Last 8 years Takeover Target,Miss Andretti,Choiser,Scenic Blast, etc have taken on the 20 hr (just flying time) to the UK and won at Royal Ascot so that hardly makes HK the powerhouse for sprinting. There is a reason we hardly get any HK or Sing Horses over here for the big races it is because they are not good enough(they have tried and went like 3rd raters)Granted Sacred Kingdom and Rocket Man are Brilliant horses.Sacred Kingdom was still beaten about 4.5 lengths at Ascot,Rocket Man At least has won in Dubai, and Sacred Kingdom in Japan but that are not arduous 20 hr trips.
March 28, 2011 at 10:05 #347573Black Caviar is clearly one powerhouse of a sprinter. While watching ATR yesterday, someone e-mailed Matt Chapman claiming that Black Caviar was heavier even than Denman.

With Rocket Man a possible Royal Ascot contender – with the Golden Jubilee as his target – it would add even more spice to the occasion if Black Caviar’s connections decided to bring her over on the long haul.

Well Said,Rocket Man is very good and also very very gutsy,i would love to see Black Caviar V Rocket Man,i think he may be better and tougher away from home than Sacred Kingdom, though i have a lot of respect for him as well,i am confidant she would have him off the bit a long way out but i suppose we all hope to see the two meet to see.
March 28, 2011 at 18:27 #347648Presto you say HK is the powerhouse for Aus bred sprinters and has been in the last 8 years. I didn’t say that HK is a sprinting powerhouse, just that it has been the base of quite a few powerhouse sprinters.
HK horses don’t go to Ascot often, that is true. The prize-money and the long trip don’t make for an enticing package. Although Joy and Fun and Happy Zero went last year (the former fractured a fetlock in the run, and the latter suffered a back injury and was pulled up).Back in the day Cape Of Good Hope went abroad, tired of running behind Silent Witness locally. He won a Golden Jubilee and ran in the first 4 in 2 Kings Stands, a July Cup and another Golden Jubilee, won the G1 Australia Stakes and placed 3 more times in G1s down under. HK race-followers consider Sacred Kingdom slightly superior to Silent Witness.
I addressed SK’s Ascot flop on page 3. Saying that HK horses in general are "not good enough" for Ascot is just poor form-reading and selective memory. To drive home the point Diabolical was 3.75 length 3rd when SK shattered Kranji’s track record to beat Rocket Man a few weeks before Ascot. Frankie said of Diabolical after that race: "It was a super run… He travelled OK – he quickened up well but the first two are very good. Third is a good spot for us and we are very pleased". Diabolical finished a short head behind SK at Ascot.
Collateral form also reflects kindly on SK. One World (2009 HK Sprint 2nd) ran third behind Kinsale King and Rocket Man on the Tapeta last year, Green Birdie (HK Sprint 4th) overturned Rocket Man in Singapore (albeit on a wet track), and Joy and Fun (HK Sprint 3rd) overturned favorite California Flag (HK Sprint 5th) again in the Al Quoz sprint. One World then dead-heated for 1st with Rocket Man in the G2 lead-up to last year’s HK Sprint (he suffered a virus before the actual race), and Ultra Fantasy, another HK sprinter, won the G1 Sprinters’ Stakes in Japan. Hell, even back in 2008, when SK was out with a fractured fore, Inspiration and Green Birdie beat home the Aussie Apache Cat in the HK Sprint.

I didnt actually state that the 2 horses mentioned were not good enough,it was a generalisation of the quality in the past.Apache Cat isnt a great yardstick, can put in a few bad runs he is a second rater compared with a lot of horses that have been to Ascot. My point is that it may be a bit hasty to say that the quality behind BC or Hay List who is a second rater compared with her is not great, dont be surprised if one of the 3rd raters go to Ascot and goes very close.Because some of those 2nd or 3rd raters are very good horses and made to look a bit inferior by a couple of brilliant horses.
April 3, 2011 at 10:05 #348466The only horse that we can use as a formline is the Group winning mare Ortensia, who is a very smart galloper. She ran a fine 5th in the HK Sprint last year at her 2nd run in & was beaten only 1.5 lengths. At her 1st run that term she ran well, 3rd behind Black Caviar over 1200m in the Patinack albeit beaten around 5-6 lengths.
I personally think that given even luck Black Caviar would be unbeatble at Ascot over the 5F and probably the 6F too. She is by a long way a better pure sprinter than any of the other horses that Australia has sent over in the past, Takeover Target, Miss Andretti & Choicir included.
Newmarket over the 6F may be different as we have not seen her run over more than 1200m in Melbourne and that 6F is really equivalent to 1400m IMO.
Have a look at the youtube clips. She destroys horses from the 600m to the 200m and then the race is over.
I hope that she travels o/s next term but she has to get through Sydney & Brisbane first!
April 7, 2011 at 06:58 #348989Black Caviar is quoted at $1.20 with sportsbet for the TJ SMITH on Saturday.Probably being a bit generous as she is having her first go in the reverse direction and also the prospect of a wet track. As for the field of 11 at least 9 of those have won Group 1 races,so she isnt meeting donkeys.
April 7, 2011 at 23:04 #349151This is the first time Black Caviar would have run 4 times in 7 weeks. Some would say that’s normal for most Australian horses, but it is something to think about, along with the right-handed and soft ground (?) doubts.
If Black Caviar does win again this weekend, this could be the last time she’s above 1.2 for a while. All "ifs", but it is good to be able to think about the possibilities, however big they are, including possible International races from the end of 2011 onwards.
BUT – if RVL, or any Australian racing people with influence are reading this – please don’t publish another one of those annoyingly, cringe-worthy blogs. It’s making me thankful RfC just use scarfs in this country…..
