After this morning’s demolition of the Patinack Farm Classic, I think it’s clear Black Caviar deserves to start receiving the recognition the likes of Zenyatta and Goldikova receive.

Hay List never ran his race, but it just wouldn’t have mattered. Black Caviar destroyed Star Witness, winner of the Coolmore Stud Stakes, over the Flemington 1200m by 4 lengths in a time of 1 minute 7.96 seconds on a Dead rated track.
She’s clearly the best sprinter in Australia at this moment in time, which apart from the slight unknown of how she might measure up in HK (Sacred Kingdom) equals the world, and as a result she’s arguably the best female racehorse on the planet.
8 wins from 8 starts – 1 Group 1, 4 Group 2’s and 2 Listed races. No running around in restricted mares races for her whole life either – open wfa company.
Her only win under a length was because of a slow start. In that race she beat subsequent Newmarket Handicap winner Wanted.
Black Caviar should be rated 130+ on any scale used by handicappers based in this country. I doubt she will be with the WTTR mob because there’s been enough previous "nonsense" to realise that horses only receive the highest ratings through either racing in Europe or beating European horses, despite the fact European sprinters are 2nd rate.
There’s been talk of Star Witness coming to Ascot. It’s also been said he’s better on a straight track – I would have full confidence he would win a normal King’s Stand Stakes on a Good or faster track.

You can add, "or running over a mile or further" to that list.

Yep, you can’t be rated high if you’re a sprinter. The fastest horses in the world are the worst apart from 1m 6f+ horses.

Lee Freedman; "She is the greatest sprinter I’ve seen. Bar none."
123 is an insult, even if it does take into account the 4lb (2kg) allowance.
February 19, 2011 at 08:17 #341252Another easy win for Black Caviar in the Lightning Stakes this morning. Easy is understating the win as she won by 3 lengths eased down from Hay List.
I’m sure there will be a You Tube video link that can be posted soon enough.
February 19, 2011 at 09:58 #341271Jose,
That time you mention in the first post – is that timed as per UK from the moment the stalls open, or as per USA where the timing starts at a point some yards in front of the stalls?

Well if I couldn’t find this thread I was going to create it after what I saw her do again this morning. Ran a tick under 21 secs between the 3f – 1f and just demolished the opposition. Never left the bridle and eased from a fair way out. I think I heard Hay List’s left ventricle burst at about the 2f pole. Simply a stunning sprinting performance the likes of which you’ll rarely see in a lifetime.
Australian times are as per the UK method NOT the USA.
Ten starts ten wins, the last six wins against the males at Gr2 or better. It may only be sprint form but she makes everything else look like a walker.
Here’s one of her earlier wins running 56.68 over 5f running the last 3f in 32.76 while being eased before the line. She’s the global pin up girl for the anti whip brigade.

February 19, 2011 at 11:27 #341288Wow! Shes good

As Chiswickian said, the times include the start. For example, Black Caviar’s first 200m was timed at 13.75 seconds.
Black Caviar’s next run will be in the Newmarket Handicap at Flemington. Fit and well, the race is priced up as if it is over. It probably will be on a decent track in 68 (or less) seconds.
She’s so good that if Hay List goes to Dubai he’ll be expected to win.
February 20, 2011 at 19:42 #341492This a proper racehorse all right.
What a pity she won’t be coming over for Royal Ascot.

Jose, it looks like there’s a bit of a campaign starting to get her the recognition she deserves.

Actually, some of the recognition and appreciation has come as a surprise to me, especially as I thought the Patinack win was just as good as Saturday‘s Lightning win.
Just for note on this thread, Moody has made some comments about Black Caviar running in the Newmarket Handicap with 58kg – maximum weight spread is 8kg. I’m not taking the comments too seriously, but I do hope the unbeaten record has no impact on where she runs, including potential overseas trips.

Don’t be so surprised Jose. The International recognition of the status of the Lightning is seriously higher than that for the Patinack/Linlithgow.
As far as I know she has no potential overseas trips in the near future. Perhaps HK in December? A lot can happen between now and then.

She’s very good, wouldn’t get too excited just like those with Overdose did.
Nothing to prove in Australlia but everything to prove world wide, come to Ascot if you’re good enough.
Can I just say it’s bloody ludicrus to suggest she deserves the same regonition as Zenyatta or Goldikova.
February 23, 2011 at 20:32 #341929Well, yes, she has a way to go before she can be compared with those two great mares, especially Goldikova, but you can’t really fault what she’s achieved so far, and in most of her races she’s faced far better opposition than did Overdose.
I don’t think you should fall into the trap of thinking that unless you win a Group 1 in the UK, or Europe or America for that matter, than it doesn’t quite count.
The leading Australian sprinters are probably, on average, the best in the world, at least it’s seemed so in recent times, and there will be opportunities for her to race in countries a little nearer to home this year. Let’s hope she comes to Royal Ascot next year.
And, don’t forget, Zenyatta never raced outside America.

Have you thought about anything you’ve typed, Mr Wilson?
‘Come to Ascot,’ almost put in a way where she’d face tougher opposition, and a sentence later it’s ludicrous to suggest she deserves (at least) the same recognition as a certain mare who, thanks to her connections, hid in the most obscure type of G1’s possible?
Black Caviar could run in x amount of fillies and mares sprints and never lose if that makes you great. There’s often a decent one that closes off a card at Caulfield at this time of year. There’s also one in South Australia that does have G1 status.
The Lightning Stakes is up there as one of world’s great sprint races. With a roll of honour of Scenic Blast, Miss Andretti, Takeover Target etc, why would it not be? It was the first leg of the Global Sprint Challenge, again contested without top European sprinters. Where were Markab and Gilt Edge Girl?
February 23, 2011 at 23:36 #341971No reason to go to Ascot because it’s trip, there just aren’t many good sprinters there, and the prize money isn’t too attractive.
Dubai or Hong Kong would be the places to go. Singapore would be worth a look as well. There are few shock results in those parts.
Overdose beats up up on nothing most of the time but Black Caviar is beating proven sprinters in the best sprinting racing jurisdiction (bar possibly Hong Kong).
I’d need to see how Hay List matches up with the likes of Rocket Man before we get a better idea of just how good she is, but she’s a star. I think she’s at least the best sprinter we’ve seen since Sacred Kingdom in his prime, and may be even better, but of course we need to see more.
