Treble tonight – rattling through his 5lb claim now in egg and spoon races.
Let’s see if he’s still in demand once it’s 3lb or nothing – it’s like being granted five wishes and wasting each wish on a bag of crisps.

January 27, 2023 at 09:13 #1632328The words “hobnobs” and “waste” should never appear in the same sentence, Gladders.

I think his ambitions far exceed keeping his claim in the hope of a Lincoln place and looks like he’s got the right PR team. Helps that he comes across as a genuinely likeable and enthusiastic lad. Good luck to him.

As did all of them, dating right back in my memory to Jimmy Bleasdale.
He could win a series of major handicaps claiming 5lb if managed correctly and that would be a great platform for his senior career, but the rate at which he’s rattling through Class 6 Handicaps he’ll be down to 3lb by Royal Ascot!

Has that been done much before?

That’s a very good question.
Above is a link to past champion apprentices.
It includes some who went on to be top jockeys, but plenty who didn’t.
Does being that precocious 5lb claimer whose claim makes the difference in a photo finish to land some monster gamble in a Lincoln/Chester Cup/Whatever guarantee you a future place at the top table once your claim had gone?
Obviously not, but I’d argue it doesn’t hurt.
Proving you’re not only a jockey, but a “big race jockey” before you’ve even lost your claim is surely a career boost for any young jockey.
I just think it’s a bit mad to ride out your claim, or most of it, at minor AW meetings when you could have every big trainer who’s laid one out for a big summer handicap after your services if you protect it a bit.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"January 27, 2023 at 23:44 #1632459He was interviewed on RTV tonight and confirmed he is going to Florida soon for a month.
January 27, 2023 at 23:46 #1632460He also had his first ride and a winner for Charlie Appleby. This could be meaningful for the future.
January 28, 2023 at 05:29 #1632479Watching him on the BBC news now , listened to him prev talking , analysing how a race would run out , he was spot on , the lads seriously talented , his ride for the boys in blue a prime example , green horse who he got up on the line …without the whip , I’m sure they were impressed , forget his claim if he keeps his head straight he’ll be around for a long time
January 28, 2023 at 06:30 #1632481Good to see a rare positive story about horse racing on the BBC. Although it mistakenly gives the impression that he has personally earned £100,000 since he started riding.
January 28, 2023 at 08:46 #1632498Rides at Lingfield today, including a 25/1 shot in the last, though it’s not the first time he’s ridden it.

his allowance is gone. He’s a natural, you can’t teach that.January 28, 2023 at 10:04 #1632505You’d currently be £19.42p up on the year backing his mounts blind to a £1 stake – tells its own story.

Billy The Kid failed to ride a winner yesterday.
Gone at the game?
Needs to consider an alternative career?
Chezza suspects not.
