Mea culpa, betlarge.
tony, there’s a piece in The Times today that quotes two bookmakers who took a bath on the Leicester win. Rupert Adams of William Hill suggests the days of 5,000/1 are done, and that he would be amazed if those odds were offered in the future.
The newspaper also claims that an email circulated among Ladbrokes employees this week expressly forbids any event being offered above 1,000/1. A spokesman for Ladbrokes said, “5,000/1 is finished…The stakes on Leicester at 5,000/1 were very small but it’s a question of risk. Are we willing to turn some of that business away to minimise our risk? We have shareholders. We’re a publicly traded company.”
So 50,000/1 won’t be available from the book any time soon, as doubtless other firms will follow suit.
May 4, 2016 at 21:57 #1244523How many years and how many teams have they laid to loyal fans at the beginning of the season that can’t possibly win their division ?
And then one goes and wins and they squeal like pigs!!
Gutless !! Absolutely gutless!!
May 5, 2016 at 08:35 #1244533‘Bookies facing biggest ever payout’ is the type of phrase being bandied about, which whilst it might be true means nothing in isolation as it’s quite likely that their satchels have retained the biggest ever wedge of punters’ folding too
Leicester City might have been a loser in the fieldbooks of some local bookmakers but I doubt very much it was countrywide
Winning rags make both the few individuals who’ve backed them very happy and the many bookmakers who laid them
Tunisia were 5,000/1 to win – with Hill’s if memory serves – at the outset of the 1978 World Cup
They won a game against Mexico but failed to qualify for the second round
No idea why I remember this…
May 5, 2016 at 09:59 #1244538I seem to remember New Zealand (entertainingly nicknamed ‘The All Whites’) were a similar price to win the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
As it was – and to the pleasure of quizmasters everywhere – they were the only unbeaten team in the tournament.

May 5, 2016 at 17:38 #1244576As usual the bookies forget to mention all the accas that went down week in , week out with all the big clubs getting beaten on a regular basis not to say a skinner for Hills on their Premier Predictor competition.
It’s a shame to see the 5000/1 dream odds are no more as they would have tempted all the mug punters in for Burnley, Bournemouth etc in the new season and now they won’t bother as they’ll all be wanting 5000/1 at least.

Cheers raymo
He’s a mad Leicester City fan so he’s like a pig in dung at the moment. His grandpa took him down to the training ground at Easter bank holiday and he got selfies with quite a few of the players as well as Claudio. We don’t have a season ticket (not likely to get one next year either) but he has managed to see them 5 or 6 times this year and he’s waited after some of the matches to get a shirt signed which the majority of players are happy to do. His grandpa has waited over 70 years for Leicester to win the title and it’s happened when my son is only ten. I’ve told him to make the most of it as it might not happen again in his lifetime! Needless to say I’m not one of the clairvoyant few who bet them at 5000/1. Happy days all the same
May 5, 2016 at 20:48 #1244596It is great to see Aaron I am Leicester born and bred so it has been a pleasure this season!!!

May 7, 2016 at 12:25 #1245003lol Homer, I wish.
Got my 1000-1 winner with On His Own in The 2014 Gold Cup, but sadly some spineless stewards put paid to that

Best I ever managed was 270’s, 280’s for a horse called Josie S and B, at Roscommon a few years back, and Rock On Ruby at 200’s for The 2012 Champion Hurdle.
Looks like the 5000-1 winners will disappear then, but the search for that 1000-1 winner continues lol
May 7, 2016 at 12:47 #1245010Bookies must have cleaned up- you also have to take into account all the accumalators that must have been chinned- Leicester wouldn’t have gone in any of those, well you wouldn’t need to put them in at those odds

He loves his football VTC. Double celebration today as I’m Gloucestershire born and bred and my Dad’s team Bristol Rovers got automatic promotion thanks to an injury time goal, Goodnight Irene!. Although I’ve been desperate for Leicester to win the title and to be fair I’ve seen them play many many times in the last 20 years, I have the unfortunate privilege of being a fan since the age of 3 of those under achievers in recent years Arsenal (Who I got to see play for the first time ever at Wembley when they beat Man City 3-0 in the community shield). Apparently I wasn’t keen on supporting either of the Bristol teams in the early seventies so as Arsenal were doing well I must have gone for them. My brother was also like minded and supports Chelsea.
Looked like a great day at Leicester today and he’s looking forward to going to the parade a week on Monday and if he behaves we might look at going to an away game in the Champions League

May 9, 2016 at 08:53 #1245164Great stuff Aaronizneez.
You cant beat a European away match, somewhere like Prague would do you nicely.
I’ve never been to the new ground but did get to Filbert Street a few times. I do like the city, have been to Grace Road which to be fair is a bit of a sh!t hole but the racecourse is one of my favourites.Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
May 9, 2016 at 09:58 #1245167It’s a great photo Aaronizneez!
Surely you’ve told him that this is absolutely standard for Leicester City and he can look forward to a lifetime of multiple Premier League titles with the occasional Champions League success?

I like Leicester races and I always try and go at least once a year with the old fellow, usually a NH meeting in December.
