September 2, 2013 at 00:02 #450084Ricky,
It was TEN years ago – I’d forgotten I’d even run a TRF BB until I was reminded of it on this thread.

Hmm….how can I harmlesslly settle this once and for all so we can all move on?
I vaguely remember meeting some TRF forumites at Towcester races once, I recall meeting Glenn and a few people from UBF at a pub in Greenwich once, I gave Glenn lifts home from a pub in Hammersmith and we had a meal at The Lahore Kebab House if I remember correctly, the real Rob Barta was a likeable guy from Texas who delivered pizzas for a living as I recall….if that load of junk trivia isn’t enough, I give up and shall accept being regarded as a clone of me instead of the reality which is….err….well, me.
My desire to justify myself (never that great in the first place, some may remember) is now exhausted.

Never mind second prize in a beauty contest, I’d got the winning slogan in a twitter compo run by the HKJC.
A bomber jacket and baseball cap wung their way to me until…
The evil VATman entered the scene asking for several pounds of flesh.
I need a lawyer.
My prize from Honkers was valued at HK$5540 but VATman wants over a bag of Honkers sand before it’s released.
What to do? I feel victimised. In the winter my torso will freeze and come summer my pate will be burnt to a crisp lest I get the goodies.
Help me Wit…
December 30, 2013 at 10:17 #463473Hi Glenn
Its all about the paperwork with VATman.
He’ll say he can only work with what’s been declared, even if it seems clear that the figure for a HKJC bomber jacket and baseball cap should be more like HKD 540 than HKD 5540:
http://entertainment.hkjc.com/entertain … event.aspx
With the items now in bond in UK, the standard route is in paras 3.6 – 3.8 of HMRC Notice 143:
http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPort … P130_14404
But that process might take a while.
So you could bell the VATman, explain the typo, emphasise your vulnerability to immediate chill, and ask for his direct fax/email where HKJC can rush him an amended customs declaration for speedy release of the items.
Then get HKJC to do the necessary, either by belling Membership Services here and getting a redirect:
http://member.hkjc.com/member/english/a … ctory.aspx
or by belling / emailing a friendly name here (maybe Mark Richards if the competition was connected to the International Races ? ):
http://campaign.hkjc.com/en/2013-hkis-m … ntact.aspx
Should HKJC offer to send you another set in apology, you might consider asking for it instead to be given to one of their fragrant ladies to wear.
Then – but only if her free and independent decision and with no thoughts of tax avoidance – if she later elects to send you the items one-on-one as her personal gift, that might justify declaring them at second-hand value. (Gifts from one individual to another of total value under GBP 36 (including carriage cost) are VAT and duty free under para 2.4 of the HMRC Notice ).
Interestingly, if you brought the same items back personally from HK you’d have a GBP 390 allowance to work with (reduced to GBP 270 if you used the private jet):

Happy New Year !
December 30, 2013 at 11:12 #463480Thanks wit. I made a typo myself there. Should have read HK$540 not HK$5540.
Those fragrant ladies smell like a bit of a plan, and it looks like I’m allowed upto half a dozen of them in full garb on my private batcopter.
March 7, 2014 at 01:00 #470277I was reminded of this thread today by a letter from HMRC. With lightning speed they’ve concluded that my yuletide appeal to them was justified and they had made an error and they’ll be processing some compensation some time before the end of the year.
No goodies for me though.
Parcelforce holding times appear to be somewhat shorter than HMRC response times.September 29, 2014 at 09:30 #491057Man walked into a bar…

if HKJC is any barometer, of the 13 off-course outlets closed yesterday >>due to road blockage<<, 9 reopened today:
Four Off-course Betting Branches Remain Closed today
30/09/2014
Due to road blockage, the service of four Off-course Betting Branches (OCBBs) in Central, Causeway Bay and Mongkok will be temporarily suspended today (30 September) until further notice. Customers are advised to use services of other OCBBs and alternative betting channels, including Telebet and Interactive services. For enquiry, please call the Club’s 1817 Hotline. The affected OCBBs are:
Central, Star
Causeway Bay, Percival Street
Mong Kok, Nathan Centre
Mong Kok, Argyle StreetThe other nine OCBBs that were affected yesterday will resume service at noon today. They are:
Central, Stanley Street
Sheung Wan, Connaught Road West
Sheung Wan, Possession Street
Central, Connaught Road Central
Wan Chai, Jaffe Road
Wan Chai, Spring Garden Lane
Wan Chai, Hennessy Road
Causeway Bay, Jaffe Road
Price Edward, Nathan RoadTomorrow (Oct 1) the National Day meeting continues as planned – no commercial sponsors, all races named after HK or China, and a big firework display at the end.
Maybe disruption not expected out at Sha Tin, just like demo at Trafalgar Square not normally expected to affect racing at Sandown.
But since the far bigger firework display around Victoria Harbour has been cancelled (typically hundreds of thousands visit that compared to tens of thousands at Sha Tin), will be interesting to see if the Sha Tin display gets used to project TV image of normality into the mainland.
Also whether the trophies at ST will be presented by the usual slew of government dignitaries from the Chief Exec downwards (scarce the past few days).
Locally, lots of folk worried about the future and pretty much everyone has strong opinions. But its not clear how many of those staying home are against the movement – lot of closed MTR exits, suspended bus services and traffic jams.
September 30, 2014 at 18:11 #491128Wit ….cheers for post
what exactly is the rumpus about ??…its hard to read the situation from press reporting
thanks
October 1, 2014 at 00:48 #491144Hi Ricky
The protests started out about how the next Chief Executive of HK (effectively its Prime Minister) will be elected in 2017.
Until now the CE has been elected by a committee of “great and good” individuals of HK, basically chosen by Beijing – 1,200 of them last time in 2012:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Election_Committee
In 2012 it was promised that for the next CE election in 2017, the electing would be done by the whole 5 million-odd adult population of HK, though Beijing would still make the final appointment.
The people of HK took this to mean they could nominate and elect who they wanted, even if their selection ultimately was vetoed by Beijing – ie they could demonstrate that Beijing was acting against the popular vote.
Beijing took it to mean that the only names appearing on the ballot paper would be candidates pre-approved by Beijing through its 1,200 “great and good” individuals, who would now move from being an electoral college to being determiners of acceptable candidates.
So essentially the fight began over whether the people of HK can create a situation where Beijing is seen to veto (perhaps repeatedly) candidates that have won the popular vote, or whether Beijing can be assured before the election that whoever wins will be acceptable to it and that it will be spared the bad publicity of maybe having to veto a popular victor disagreeable to it.
But some of the protesters have now expanded their demands – particularly after the Day 1 use of tear gas against non-violent demonstrators – to include the immediate resignation of the current Chief Exec who is seen as failing to stand up for the citizenry of HK against Beijing, failing to stand up against his fellow property developers who collude to keep housing prices high for most in HK, for generally doing little to alleviate inequality and poverty, and in some cases gripes specific to particular groups.
The protests are not a monolithic movement but a from-the-heart pouring-out of discontent by a lot of individuals who are not all motivated by exactly the same basket of grievances – though the method of choosing the CE is still the most common thread between them.
But its also fair to say you wouldn’t see these kinds of numbers out on the streets if everyone was doing swimmingly in economic terms and seeing only a rosy, prosperous future.
October 1, 2014 at 08:37 #491147Thanks Wit
I will be watching with interest , looks like a plethora of ills to be exploded
Cheers
