BDM jumping not up to scratch today wise to be pulled up, wonder if jumping national fences end last season on his mind
I see on some internet sources the retirement brigade are out because he was pulled up
Great run for a plus yard (see you later) jumped and travelled to perfection. Gold cup winner 2022? He is now the favourite at 7/2

November 20, 2021 at 16:14 #1568309V impressive, tho race fell apart. The others didn’t jump well, while APT seemed really slick. Did he jump to the right on occasion, or was that the camera angle?
November 20, 2021 at 18:02 #1568316The first decent winner of this race since Kauto Star. Imo, this race hasn’t been a true GC trial since 2011. Nothing wrong with Cue Card or BDM winning it three times each, but what else was ever in it? Coneygree and Native River (both runner-ups) the only two horses to be considered as GC class. Seems more like a King George trial rather than a Gold Cup….
November 20, 2021 at 18:26 #1568322“Gag my point is Williams as no history of turning around soured or horses with issues , there,s a talented horse there if the right man gets him”
My point was that the right woman had him and got an open G1 win and a handful of good places out of him, where most trainers would have ruined his fragile knees in one season.

Yes I thought that too. I’m not convinced that he has to go left handed.
November 20, 2021 at 19:54 #1568329You can only beat what’s put in front of you I guess but I’d be surprised if anything A Plus Tard beat today even shows up in the Gold Cup, I guess Royal Pagaille could but probably ground dependent? Either way he was good but for me didn’t achieve anything he hadn’t already before today.
On Bristol De Mai – I guess its up to connections, I could see him winning Grade 2’s still if it gets deep in say the Cotswold Chase. He doesn’t owe them anything.
We got one horse back today to some extent in Lostintranslation but the jury is firmly out on a few others – Waiting Patiently, Defi Du Seuil and the enigma that is Goshen spring to mind
November 20, 2021 at 20:56 #1568333Green I disagree , she def hasn’t made the most of him , she isn’t a top trainer and the stable has been in decline since her father died , plenty of trainers could and would have done a better job with him

November 20, 2021 at 21:42 #1568334A Plus Tard was very good but he had little to beat. Royal Pagaille is good but is nowhere near good enough to being a serious Gold Cup contender.
Bristol De Mai’s jumping was strange. Too big at some fences and left trailing legs in others. He never travelled and it was no surprise to see him pull up. Difficult to see where they go with him now if he cannot win or run well in this race.
Even Waiting Patiently’s most loyal supporters must have had enough now. He is like Al Dancer last week. Always tipped and talked up, seldom delivers.

Like Nicky Henderson has with Champ, for example? Or Alan King did with Yanworth? Or Paul Nicholls did with Laurina?

Royale Pagaille ran a very good race, but A Plus Tard is just different class. He might get his revanche in the Gold Cup.
November 21, 2021 at 06:25 #1568357Laurina was bleeding , nothing Nicholls could do there , we all know King is now a flat trainer with a few jump horses Jefferson has few horses left , there,s a reason for that , its sad as you don’t like to see anyone struggling but unfortunately she isn’t good enough , I hope Williams can find the key to Waiting but I doubt it , a Sandy Thomson \ Dr Newland are better prepared to do so , if you look online you,ll see the story about Yorkhill , when he turned up at Thomson yard he had a virus , practically skin and bones , the yard brought him back , made training fun again and then won a grade 2 with him , in my eyes that was the best bit of training of all last season

November 21, 2021 at 08:10 #1568359Waiting Patiently may not be in love with the game no more, like Cyrname or Defi it seems. It can happen, in which case it don’t matter who the trainer is.
November 21, 2021 at 08:13 #1568360Mike , Yorkhill was soured , flashing tail etc ….it sometimes just takes the right man

November 21, 2021 at 08:43 #1568363Sometimes. But not always.
November 21, 2021 at 09:59 #1568365Defi was disappointing yesterday. Unlike the Shloer last year when he was in trouble very early, he travelled quite well. I even backed him in running. Fortunately I hit the cash out button at the right time and nicked a small profit but it was still sad to see him trail home. He looks gone at the game.

Yes I know Laurina is a bleeder (along with possibly some type of musculoskeletal issue going by the hideous way she jumped fences) that’s why I picked her as an example; Yanworth had a joints of a horse about 3 times his age and had to get them filled up with steroids to get him on a racecourse, which is why he failed a drugs test as the withdrawal time isn’t 100% reliable and they sailed too close to the wind; by the sound of it Champ’s back is in ribbons and Cyrname’s wind is shot at this point. I’m willing to bet that Defi’s and Goshen’s problems are mostly physical too. Read Henrietta’s Knight’s book- she says horses get labelled sour or mad or dogs when it’s usually physical, and some problems deteriorate to the point where they can’t be fixed up to G1 level.
My main point is that if Nicholls or Henderson or Mullins or Elliott were tiny stables and their one good horse happened to be Cyrname or Laurina or Real Steel or Champ or Shattered Love or any other of a host of horses that were talented but had crappy lungs or larynxes or legs or backs, then people would be rubbishing them as poor trainers who weren’t up to the job and should have anything decent taken off them. It’s just pot luck that Jefferson got a horse who was good, but with crap knees. A huge trainer could just afford to pull that horse out once a year and if it happened to win it would be lauded as a “superb training performance”. If it did no good then it could just be metaphorically scrapped and then on with the show with a stableful of other shiny horses to point at.
November 21, 2021 at 16:13 #1568402Green a good trainer will make the best of what they have , I simply can’t believe he couldn’t have done more , it’s funny you mention Elliott , how did he start off , taking castoffs and average horses and placing them properly , which horse got him on map , silver birch who Nicholls gave up on , take your chances , maximise what you have , Jefferson is struggling for a reason , I take no pleasure from it
