Quote: from thedarkknight on 2:25 pm on Sep. 23, 2006[br]That isn’t the point, Sir Harry.
If people within Racing think this man genuinely represents "The Pride Of Racing", that says it all for me.
Personally I have a lot of respect for him even if I do believe he belongs to a by gone era. Its amazing how we all once put these people on pedestals actually but I think particularly with the coming of Betfair etc, thats all changed.
Still I can never understand why he got so much worse publicity then the likes of McManus but I think it might be due to his prickly nature.
I wouldnt nominate him for this pride of racing thingy either TDK but I dont for one second that he is the reason for the decline of interest in racing in any way.
One thing is for sure, he has done been doing great charity work and Gonzos assertion that he is the same as a bloodthirsty african dictator belongs somewhere else IMO.

September 23, 2006 at 14:15 #77556Speaking of Thommo…
I stumbled accross this the other day….
http://www.myspace.com/tommofanclub
Is it a joke?
September 23, 2006 at 19:44 #77557Recently finished Curleys autobiography ‘Giving a little back’ – very entertaining read and much better than lot of racing biographies which seem to just have long lists of winners – i cant honestly see why he gets so much stick – maybe his training methods are somewhat eccentric and he is definetly an unusual character but
surely makes the racing scene more interesting- as for tommo just mute the sound if it irritates just as if it was a commercial…….
September 23, 2006 at 20:13 #77558Barney Curley ? FFS!
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains

I can assure you the people your comparing him to did much more more then making the odd race a no betting event.
I read that book about him. Very interesting……actually this gives me an idea for a thread.

the funniest bit is where it says..view Tommo’s friends
there are 5 of them
and one of them is a horse and another ‘Joanna’ appears to have two heads

September 25, 2006 at 20:15 #77562I was impressed with the wealth of information on the runners Thommo was giving out very fast before a sprint on Saturday.
In another connection, reading the significance of the money wagered on the horses in a race and their relative price movements before the start, is usually very difficult, so I’m appalled when some TV journalists (no names) ooh and aah about a horse being made favourite as if it’s of stunning significance, and then a few seconds later, being told there are now three joint favourites, and just before the off, when it’s too late anyway to bet on it, one of them ends up as the sole favourite. It’s the mad enthusiasm that slays me.
The same with McEvoy’s double in the first two races, the other day. I think it was Ascot. The commentator must have mentioned, nay, reported this astonishingly rare fact five or six times within the space of two or three minutes. And with such wonderment! It HAPPENS! For goodness sake!
I suppose I shouldn’t blame them. Journalists are told to do this, I believe. Assume most of the public are complete idiots. "Amazement Awe" being "Mutt" to "Shock Horror"’s "Jeff", so to speak.
Thrill ’em or horrify ’em, just so long as you get their adrenaline flowing. Infotainment, just like the News on TV. Don’t they think the races and the betting are exciting enough – a hundred times more so?

I would like to point out that Tommos fan club actually has 4 friends, the fifth one was me (i approved a friend request before realising that it was in fact total garbage).
I also got a friend request from ron atkinson, saying if he gets enough friends then he may get back on itv. I phoned nelson mandela for advice on wheher to give big ron my support but he advised against it. Sorry ron!
I would also like to point out that one of tommos fan clubs friends is actually "tom" the myspace administrator, who is everybodys friend, so really he only has 3.
August 28, 2007 at 14:21 #4943What a shrewd guy that man is!
I am talking about, of course, Barney Curley and in particular Me Fein in the first race at Lingfield.
As highlighted in my blog, you just don’t know if his horses are going to be backed right up until race time. With half an hour to go to the race, his horse was still available at 5/2 and trading at over 4 on BF. Yet the horse opens at 7/4 and is smashed into 10/11, before easing slightly.
About 10 days ago, he had a gamble that opened at 4/1 and got smashed into 5/4 minutes before the off. Barney and his team are obviously very professional and don’t let the vibes out until very near race time when they shovel the money on.
A great gambler in my opinion.

The self proclaimed punters pal, he is nobody’s pal bar, me myself and I.
[removed]. I hope the HRA hunt him and his ilk to extinction, racing would be so much better for it.August 28, 2007 at 14:52 #112743Hi MM,
You’re obviously entitled to your opinion, [removed]
I think the answer to the above question is he is clearly not cheating – he is using the rules to his advantage, in exactly the same way that Prescott does.
What happens generally is he will run a two year old over an inadequate trip, knowing that it clearly needs further, but as it’s a 2 year old in a 6 or 7f race then nobody asks questions as he is doing nothing wrong. The horse then gets a very good handicap mark and then dots up over it’s correct trip.
There is absolutely no indication of him [removed] – it just simply wasn’t quick enough over 6 furlong. There is absolutely no indication of cheating – it’s just simply a case of plotting a horse to win when the money is down.
Just my thoughts.

August 28, 2007 at 14:55 #112744And for the record MM, I totally don’t agree with what him and Sir Mark do, I just don’t think it’s in the best interests of the sport.
But as I am constanly told, they are doing nothing wrong, and because we know what they get upto we should, as punters, turn this to our advantage – which I have done on many occassions, which is why I think they are great gamblers.
