The point is that this is the first buy-in to Cooomore that came with the right to pick their own jockey. Spencer is first jockey to the Hays. The fact that Coolmore agreed to it indicates that there is a new flexability around Ballydoyle, which may be about as welcome as the sharing of horses with David Wachman. So although Coolmore had a contract with Murtagh they have a different one with Hays. That was the parting song for Murtagh. You are either number one jockey or you are not.Johanny Fortune suffered the same fate with his job. With that, which was a blow also to O’Brien, the whole scene unfolded.Spencer had basically told O’Brien to get stuffed and now he was coming back to ride the horses trained by O’Brien.Johanny left and now Ryan Moore will be riding when available with Spencer riding the Hays horses.I personally don’t believe Coolmore would tolerate this chaos unless the Hays were anteing enormous sums of money.
April 26, 2011 at 18:14 #18360I have read nothing about the annual Ballydoyle tour for the press.I read some place that Aidan said that the Dylan Thomas yearlings were very progressive but no more. Was there a tour or is it still to come?
April 26, 2011 at 20:51 #352316I think that stopped a year or two back. Hasn’t been one for a couple of years I don’t think (off the top of my head).
April 27, 2011 at 01:09 #352336Just shows how old and worn my brain is.I wonder why they stopped.Things just keep piling up.
May 3, 2011 at 13:19 #18444They said he could not get a Two Thousand Guineas winner. His sons were too slow.So when Galileo finally got a two thousand guineas winner they said he was too fast!
June 9, 2011 at 18:18 #18867A jockey who ends up in court, another who is not available for the big races and today at Leopardstown a jockey who carried 3 lbs overwieght and was beaten a neck in a tyo race. This is the best available? Come on Ballydoyle, you are supposed to be professionals. Johnny Murtagh come home, all is forgiven.
July 19, 2011 at 17:17 #19216HAVING WATCHED BALLYDOYLE FINISH SECOND IN MANY OF THE RECENT BIG RACES PERHAPSD IT IS TIME TO REAPPROACH JOHNNY MURFTAGH.I CANNOT RECALL HIM FINISHING SECOND SO MANY TIMES IN ONE SEASON.SO FAR THIS SEASON WE HAVE SECOND IN THE ONE THOUSAND GUINEAS, THE DERBY , THE OAKS, THE IRISH OAKS, THE FRENCH DERBY,THE PRINCE OF WALES AND POSSIBLY MORE.
July 19, 2011 at 20:45 #365208You list six ‘seconds’ Andy, yet Wonder Of Wonders was only third in the Irish Oaks.
Johnny more than likely would not have been riding the horses who finished second in the Derby, 1000 Guineas, or Grand Prix De Paris either, so that only leaves the Prince Of Wales and the Oaks where he would have been on the second place finishers.
July 19, 2011 at 21:17 #365212Well at least the thread isn’t about what I thought it would be. I was expecting Andy to say something along the lines of ‘KILL ALL THE OTHER STALLIONS, JUST BREED EVERYTHING TO GALILEO, EVERY GALILEO HORSE IN THE WORLD HAS WON A CLASSIC THIS YEAR BUT WONDER OF WONDERS HAS ONLY FINISHED 2ND AND 3RD’.
July 19, 2011 at 21:28 #365215they obviously want moore but he doesnt seem to be willing to commit to it,yet anyway.
July 19, 2011 at 22:50 #365224They want Moore, but whether he’d be the PR guy talking up all the horses is a different matter. It could all end very badly after just 1 season I reckon. Can’t see him coming out and saying every horse is the best he’s ever ridden.
July 20, 2011 at 01:07 #365233Come on Zarkava. Am I really that predictable?I just might claim that Galileo is a wonder sire, capable of getting wonder horses eg Frankel, and Golden Lilac and that popo mare in RSA but not what you said. But I know you wrote it with a lot of love, so there.Anyhow I was talking about Ballydoyle not Coolmore.
July 20, 2011 at 01:40 #365235To horsesmouth; your response highlites the problem rather than defusing it.(You are correct about the Irish Oaks,it got worse there.)Nobody seems to know which horse is the stable selection any more.(During the regular season Johnny always rode the first string.)Only Joseph knows for sure,or maybe Mrs. O’Brien.I give up.
July 20, 2011 at 12:54 #365265When Johnny was riding, and before Johnny, the stable jockey didn’t always make the right choice either Andy. How else would Seamie Heffernan have won so many G.1’s?
Did Johnny know that Fame And Glory would beat Rip round Epsom? Or that Frozen Fire would beat Alessandro Volta at the Curragh?
Stable jockey’s don’t always make the right decision, and Murtagh is no different.
July 20, 2011 at 14:13 #365272So basically the trainer doesn’t have a clue as to the ranking of his horses. After training the horses for over a year nobody knows which horse is best.I give up.Sounds like a bit of a conspiracy; everyone keeping the information to themselves so that they can ride the winner of the next race. That is the problem with the stable lads riding at the races. That is why Aidan depends on Joseph I suppose. If both Heffernan and ODonoghue are qualified jockeys they should ply their trade elsewhere.Ballydoyle is basically screwed up right now with a yard of blue blood horses and no legitimate first jockey.Maybe the yard is too big and needs to be split up like the Godolphin yard or give more horses to Fabre. Now they are just getting in each others way at the track. As for Johnny, I believe he rode what he was told to ride.
July 20, 2011 at 14:37 #365275I don’t want Moore now.
I did but his rides have been god damn awful on some of ballydoyle’s.
So You Think (royal ascot)
Zoffany (Royal Ascot and France)
Fire Lily (royal ascot)
Markmanship(royal ascot)I like the multiple jockey situation. Heff ride on SYT was one of the best i have ever seen.
July 20, 2011 at 15:13 #365278Andy, I don’t see what your point is?
Ballydoyle are so far having a better season than last yet all you keeping harping on about is Joseph!

First you seemed to imply that if Murtagh had been on all those 2nd place horses they’d have won, yet the likelihood is he would have been riding different horses in those races anyway.
Then you said that nobody seemed to know which horses are the best ‘any more’. Yet the reality is that even when Murtagh was there he sometimes got it wrong when picking his rides in the big races.
Andy said "That is why Aidan depends on Joseph I suppose."
Only once has Joseph got the leg up on the first string in a Classic, so I don’t see how that is considered ‘depending on Joseph’.
As for the trainer not knowing the ranking of his horses, I think he’s generally been proved right on most occasions. Anyway, they can’t be right all the time. Different horses react differently to the challenges of race day, and some are real morning glory’s on the gallops.
