11th January 2010, for immediate release
AWT ‘Jump’ Card Provisionally Programmed For Kempton On Saturday, January 16th
• All races to close on Wednesday, January 13thFollowing the recent spate of abandonments and with the current cold snap delaying the resumption of Racing on turf, the British Horseracing Authority has programmed a provisional National Hunt Flat Card on the AWT at Kempton for Saturday, January 16th. The seven National Hunt Flat races are aimed at Steeple Chasers and Hurdlers, plus one Standard National Hunt Flat race.
Ordinarily, under the Rules of Racing, horses which have run in Steeple Chases or Hurdle Races are not eligible to run in National Hunt Flat races, but given the exceptional run of abandonments experienced recently, the British Horseracing Authority has modified the Rules in order to trial this initiative.
The turf course at Kempton is currently snow covered and frozen in places. A decision on whether racing can take place will be made on Thursday at which point the provisional card that follows will be triggered should turf racing be abandoned.
The races will close at noon on Wednesday, January 13th, with declarations to be made by 10.00am on Friday, January 15th. A running order and full race conditions are attached.

Race National Hunt Flat Race (Class 4)Nicky Henderson, when asked for his view, said: “I’m totally supportive of any initiative that’s for the benefit of racing and in the absence of jumps opportunities this is the next best thing. I’m almost certain to have runners if the turf meeting is abandoned and I wouldn’t rule out running one of our top horses if there is a suitable race.”
Champion Trainer, Paul Nicholls, said: “I spoke to the Racing Department this morning about the details of creating such a fixture and if we lose jump racing again on Saturday, it will be an ideal opportunity to get a number of horses back on the racecourse.
“We’ve been waiting for a chance to get American Trilogy back out and I would have him in mind to run before he goes back over hurdles in the Spring.”Stuart Middleton, BHA Racing Manager, said: “Some of the race conditions are quite open and it is anyone’s guess as to what kind of entry we will receive. That said, these are difficult times for all in the industry and we didn’t think we really had much to lose. It will be a useful exercise and we’ll know after Saturday whether it is something that we might want to do again in the future. All races are free to enter, so hopefully trainers will approach it with an open mind and make plenty of entries.”
Barney Clifford Director of Racing and Clerk of the Course said: “This is an enterprising move and really demonstrates the modern approach of all parties, a true endorsement of Racing for Change.
Our aim is to provide ground that reflects between Good and Good to Soft on turf. To achieve this we will be power harrowing to a depth of 8cm, so the official going will be STANDARD TO SLOW.”
January 11, 2010 at 18:57 #269321This is getting worrying – in one week two potentially decent all weather cards

Am already looking forward to Southwell’s all bumper card on Wednesday.
If Saturday’s card does go ahead then credit where credit is due to the BHA.
I have a feeling the races will prove to be very popular with trainers and if successful this could prove to be a model for the future.
January 11, 2010 at 19:08 #269322Will it be the largest public schooling event ever seen?

In anticipation has Ferdy been throwing sand at his many entries, his bumper runners are usually "covered up"?

Any racing is better than no racing I suppose, so well done for getting it on, if needed.

Fair comments Cav – I certainly will not be "investing" a single penny at either of the meetings, but I am looking forward to see how they pan out nonetheless.
January 11, 2010 at 19:19 #269327Me too, Paul. Will be very interesting. I’m not a fussy punter but might have to draw a line with chasers and hurdlers on poly
. We’ll see.January 11, 2010 at 19:21 #269328Well done the BHA. Might not be a great punting meeting but will be plenty of clues as to future winners I am sure. Hopefully the trainers will support these races.
January 11, 2010 at 19:22 #269329Looking forward to this. I’m hoping it’ll be live on Channel 4 although I expect them to devote their programme to Musselburgh if the proposed Saturday card goes ahead.
Don’t judge me for saying this, but just this once it might be alright if Kempton have to call their jumps off!
Although as has been mentioned, it’ll probably be a day to keep my money in my pocket.
January 11, 2010 at 19:28 #269330What are the distances for the above races.
I know Southwell have two races over 1m6f but will any of the Kempton races be over 2m2f or 2m4f for the stayers who may find 2m on the sharp side.
Maybe for the future Kempton could run bumpers at their AW floodlit meetings and restrict them to Amateur and Conditional riders.
January 11, 2010 at 19:38 #269335I see that AW jump card is seriously be considered
AW jumping was effectively abandoned because of the causalties and my first thought is they are trying to bring it back. However I see that its really a flat card, so would be really an All Weather National hunt flat card or bumper.
Should keep the horses fit and I think many trainers these days use similar material for the gallops these days.
January 11, 2010 at 20:01 #269337Neil – they are all two mile contests
January 11, 2010 at 20:05 #269339Personally I’d be unlikely to bet on these UK AW bumper meetings unless a serious jockey showed up, Nina Carberry, Ruby walsh, Timmy Murphy or one of the other top Irish jockeys
I’d be lookinmg for a un-fashionable trainer, one who’s less likely to be schooling, and I’d want a horse with decent point to point formJanuary 11, 2010 at 20:10 #269340It’s not all about punting. This is an excellent and doubtless well received initiative.

As someone who only bets around twice a month I agree, I’m 100% behind the initative
January 11, 2010 at 22:22 #269372Hmmmm, Ruby Walsh versus AP McCoy on the all weather.
That would be a laugh if nothing else!
EDIT: Hmmm, looks like Warwick, Musselburgh & Fontwell are all pretty confident about jumping at the weekend.
Would that put the mockers on Kempton’s plans?
January 11, 2010 at 23:15 #269388Two interesting and innovative race planning ideas get through in a week.
Is Ruth Quinn off work?

Is Ruth Quinn off work?

She was "babysitting" when Lydia called her on Racing UK earlier this week
