There are plenty of really decent, underrated and good value stallions out there. I am a fan of Red Ransom and Singspiel, but the level of success so quickly of Montjeu and Galileo has really been exceptional. They are fortunate, with such high crop yields and the full support of the Coolmore machine, but it is unusual for a stallion’s early crops to produce not just one but several actual stars.
For the record, Singspiel has about 600 foals of racing age in the Northern Hemisphere (don’t think the Japanese figures are quite up-to-date) and has had 7 Gr.1 winners. All creditable horses, but none in the superstar bracket as they have only ever won 1 Gr.1 each, as opposed to Montjeu’s, who have won 15 between them. However, in the interest of balance, I should point out that the Montjeu figures from earlier were wrong too, he actually has 444.

Top lot on tuesday at Tattersalls was a Montjeu colt for 500,000gns -Bought by Monsieur Magnier.
Sometimes I marvel at the amounts of money involved in the bloodstock game.

If you don’t mind me asking where do you get your data from? Its a fascinating subject.
October 10, 2007 at 22:12 #118923Sal, does the 444 figure relate to horses of racing age?
Really, stats regarding Group 1 winners should only be calculated on the number of horses aged 3 or over (or maybe even 4?).
The outstanding racehorse and stallion "The Tetrarch" sired 130 foals during his stud career, of which 9 (by my estimate) were Group 1 winners.
October 11, 2007 at 08:24 #118948Yes the 444 is foals of racing age – and you’re right, it doesn’t tell the whole story. With Montjeu, a much larger percentage of his total foals are still 2yos than with, for example, Singspiel, and therefore still have much more to achieve. (126 current 2yos for Montjeu, or 28%, 99 current 2yos for Singspiel or 16%).
I use a mixture of databases – the US Jockey Club’s Equineline service is pretty good.
A copy of the Stallion Book (out at Christmas) is good if you want to compare stallions like for like.
