Coolmore already have two replacements for Sadlers Wells….both of which are probably bringing in more per annum now than the old boy.
October 10, 2007 at 14:59 #118878I expect both Coolmore and Darley will chuck all their available resources at the new boys to ensure they have early success – it’s a tried and tested formula at Coolmore, and probably part of the reason Montjeu has had a slightly quieter year (Galileo came along and nicked his women).
I think Teofilo has an advantage as the first son of Galileo to retire – he is unique, compared to all the Danehills, and even Authorized has to compete with two other Montjeus. Having said that, at least Dylan isn’t in direct competition with his daddy.
I’m most interested in Manduro, just because he is from such different bloodlines and I’m curious to see how GB/Ire breeders will respond. Hopefully his performances over a mile will win over those who think of German horses as being rather stodgy.
October 10, 2007 at 15:10 #118881what is Manduro’s breeding? presumably his stud fee will be a lot cheaper than the others. I remember someone telling me about Mill Reef and Brigadier Gerard and saying that horses with unfashionable breeding that do incredibly well on the racecourse don’t breed good horses.
October 10, 2007 at 15:53 #118891I wouldn’t describe Manduro’s breeding as unfashionable – German bloodstock is in a good place at the moment – but it isn’t the conventional ND/Mr P formula.
He’s by German supersire Monsun, who has bred 3 German Derby winners, a couple of German Oaks winners, and various winners of other continental classics. He’s probably best known here for BC Turf and Coronation Cup winner Shirocco and Irish Derby second Gentlewave. He’s had good spell in the last couple of months, Le Miracle winning Gr.1 at the weekend, Getaway a Gr.2 winner (both in France), Royal Highness winning the Grade 1 Beverly D and Brisk Breeze winning at Ascot. Manduro’s dam side is fairly typically German, although his broodmare sire is Be My Guest to add the ubiqitous dose of ND.
As for fees – Darley try to aim their fees low to compete with the draw of the Irish stallions, as opposed to Coolmore who advertise high fees to boost the yearling sales of other colts by the same sire. Darley stand Shirocco at £10,000, but I would expect Manduro with his speedier profile to be more, £15-20k. They do some odd things though. Dylan would probably launch at €40-50k.
October 10, 2007 at 15:58 #118892DT strikes me as the type to make a super sire. Race record, great conformation and stamp of a horse while (as his race career shows) he was physically very tough and sound. Being by Danehill is the cherry on top…
October 10, 2007 at 16:17 #118894so would you put Dylan Thomas under the same bracket as the very expensive fees horses like Rock of Gibralter and Montjeu command?
October 10, 2007 at 16:39 #118895A first season sire would have had to have done something truly extraordinary to earn an opening fee similar to Montjeu’s current price. The sires that are currently €100,000+ are already established – Montjeu, Galileo, Danehill Dancer, Sadler’s Wells himself. Way too much for a newbie.
George’s opening fee this year was officially €60,000. Hurricane Run was €30,000. Dylan, as an Arc winning Danehill, will probably be between the two.
October 10, 2007 at 16:47 #118896so why was GWs stud value so high when in comparison to others, he didnt win as much on the track? Just trying to get to grips with the whole going to stud thing thats all. See what you mean about ‘seasoned pros’ such as Galileo and Montjeu (i didnt realise Montjeu had sired such good horses!)
October 10, 2007 at 17:00 #118898George had the wow factor last year (or hype, if you prefer). He was the flagship new retiree, so had the highest price of the newbies. As a miler, with pretensions to 10f, he had more universal appeal than maybe a less flashy 12f horse.
He was touted as an obvious successor to Danehill (a yearly event, now!), and as such it is helpful to make him into a valuable horse by setting his fee high, even if not everyone pays that fee in the end.
October 10, 2007 at 18:08 #118900Of the recently, or soon to be, retired middle distance horses, Sir Percy, Authorized and especially Manduro look the most likely to succeed at stud.
I’m not sure Dylan Thomas will do as well, admirable racehorse though he is. His female line isn’t that strong, although it hasn’t stopped Choisir from making a promising start.
October 10, 2007 at 19:16 #118904I don’t see what all the fuss about Montjeu is for. In the time he’s been at stud he’s sired 225 offspring. Only 6 of those have won a Group 1. Very poor return for such an expensive stallion imo. Coolmore must be thanking their lucky stars that Hurricane Run came along. Just goes to show you how important an Arc win is to the breeders.

Could you tell us which active stallions (with at least that number of foals) are doing better?
October 10, 2007 at 19:55 #118911Dont have a whole lot of time at the moment but a quick look gives me Red Ransom 5 Group 1 winners including Red Clubs and Electrocutionist from 210 foals – Fee 30000 grand
October 10, 2007 at 20:02 #118912I was trying to figure out if you were being sarcastic, CR!
Don’t know where you get your stats, but you appear to be missing a few Red Ransoms. My count gets 7 Northern Hemisphere Gr.1 winners from 1128 foals of racing age.
Try again.
October 10, 2007 at 20:05 #118913Cavellino – so long as Montjeu conjures up a real star such as Hurricane Run or Authorised every season or two they will be able to sustain the fee. You’d wonder whether Red Ransom would ever produce one as good as either of those no matter how many opportunities he had.
October 10, 2007 at 20:21 #118914Hi Sal
From your previous postings your a lot more knowledgeable on breeding than I am. I’m using the RI database which only goes back to to 2000, so I stand corrected by your knowledge/data and 7 makes him even better value.
Hurricane Run only beat Electrocutionist by 1/2 a length in the ’06 King George after all.October 10, 2007 at 20:40 #118916Singspiel at £35k..Superb stakes winners to foal ratio and producing Group 1 winners at BOTH ends of the world.
