Best prices:
4-1 AP
9-1 Hamilton, Murray, McIlroy
16-1 Ennis-Hill, O’Sullivan
28-1 FarahAP’s actually been cut from 5’s yesterday, but it seems to me like he’s there on sufferance due to lack of alternatives. Unusual that three of the top four in the betting have already won it (AP in 2010). I can’t see Hamilton keeping the award as he’s already 8/11 to win the drivers and it would just look a bit soft. It’s hard to see Murray bettering his 2012 achievements of Wimbledon/Olympic Gold and there’s some question regarding his general popularity. If Rory Mac didn’t win it last year after two Majors and a Ryder Cup, he’d basically need to Slam this year!
The athletes may be in with a squeak as their sport is at least live on terrestrial TV in August, but they probably peaked a couple of year’s ago and I’m not sure the Worlds has the same kudos as an Olympics. Ronnie would need to regain his World Title and probably the UK which is at least on the Beeb and is bang before the event in November. Can’t see it unless he announces his retirement too!
England skipper Chris Robshaw is a standout 50-1 with Stan James. At 33’s – with England a general 7-2 to win the World Cup – if one allows for that, you are getting better than 11-2 on him with the World Cup ‘in the bag’ so to speak. This will be shown in saturation coverage on terrestrial TV a few weeks before SPOTY. Without such ‘big’ personalities such as Wilkinson and Johnson (who were SPOTY winner & runner-up in 2003) Robshaw could be very short with an England win.
It would be great to see AP win again, truly an achievement for racing although he’s likely to disappear altogether from the public consciousness in May and SPOTY is in December.

February 10, 2015 at 12:24 #504930Where is Ruby Walsh in this list? Oh, he is the even money favourite. At least he should be.

He’s Irish.

Wouldn’t Ruby be ineligible on account of his Irishness? I know Barry McGuigan won the award in the eighties but he was a British citizen.
February 10, 2015 at 12:58 #504937Is AP british? Didn’t know that.

SorryMaybe a better question is why hasn’t Walsh won RTE’s Sports Person Of The Year? AP (NI counts in both awards) and Barry Geraghty both have.

Surely he’s there solely because he announced his retirement? He was available at 66/1 plus prior to it.
February 10, 2015 at 14:43 #504951AP will be forgotten by the time it gets around to voting for SPotY. Ridiculous to even try and make a bet this early, despite the tempting odds. I can never understand people placing bets so far in advance of the event.

Yes, of course. I notice Steven Gerrard is also in the lists @ 33-1 as he’s playing his last season for Liverpool.
Ryan Giggs won in 2009 in a similar ‘lifetime achievement’ situation.

February 10, 2015 at 18:22 #504970Only way AP wins if he has a stonking Festival and/or wins the National.
AP obviously eligible by virtue of being born in the North.
Agree rugby looks most likely to provide a standout performance but would it be the captain or another player?
Rory McIlroy the other obvious contender as he’ll surely win at least one major.
February 10, 2015 at 19:17 #504983If AP gets anything it will be something like a lifetime achievement award, but the BBC hates racing and didn’t get a look in during last year’s SPOTY so question if that will happen.

To be fair, the BBC hates all sports!

February 10, 2015 at 19:45 #504988This time last year, in what turned out to be quite a lean year for British sport, Lizzy Yarnold was favourite for Sports Personality.
The public will soon forget McCoy.
February 10, 2015 at 19:56 #504989AP is flavour of the month for now. When was the last time he would have made the headlines for riding a winner at Ayr on a Tuesday for instance?
For the moment it seems like we’ll get an update if AP’s motions are a bit looser than normal in the morning, but I can’t see it lasting once the press are able to say with certainty that he’s ridden his last horse as a professional.
Something always seems to emerge during the year that eclipses the early market leaders.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
