Many thanks, Mr Fists.
Mr Ginger – just about to set off to Newbury now with the plan of trying at least to avoid total ignominy.
All the grisly details sure to follow later this week!gc

Value Is EverythingJanuary 22, 2009 at 13:38 #205708How did you get on?
January 22, 2009 at 14:28 #205713they were rubbish!! Hahaha. Luckily i was there on the bench and for moral support, and managed to win the spectators quiz. Had a smashing night though. I mostly enjoyed happy jacks driving trying to get out of the racecourse! Haha!
January 22, 2009 at 15:32 #205732Rubbish indeed!
Hah!
We just happened to be less good than some of the other teams there.
Think of our effort as that of a point-to-pointer being rushed straight into Open company after a Maiden win – not completely hopeless, but rarely looking likely to unsettle more experienced rivals.
Four out of eight rounds being entirely Flat-oriented didn’t help, and without Zoz we’d have taken an even bigger kicking on them. But then it’s not as if we didn’t know we might get questions on it, having seen Ginger’s sample questions; and my own rotten performance on the Flat stuff should help allay Grasshopper’s fears that I’m on the turn at the very least.

Zome did indeed win the spectators’ quiz, which for a day or two at least makes her bigger than Jesus in this parish. However, you were lucky you were allowed to stay long enough to do said quiz, hun, after the looks you got at the bar when asking for a cherry Martini!

A top night, all in all, I thought, and a repeat visit seems very likely. Thanks to Stewart and Hilda Nash, West Berks Racing Club and of course Ginger for having / inviting us.

January 22, 2009 at 15:56 #205741Cheers muchly to everyone who put it together, for yes we may have been unutterably rubbish (and cast shame on a fantastic forum) but at least fun was had. Which is after all, the very point.
Zome, some cheerleader you are!

Value Is EverythingJanuary 22, 2009 at 18:32 #205782My party piece ( for aficienados only, you understand
) was being able to name ( without referring to notes ) every Derby winner since 1849 until present day. Don’t ask me why 1849.
I used to offer those who said I couldn’t do it a pound for every one I got wrong or forgot, but they in turn had to pay me 10p for every one I got right. Made me a few quid among the racing fans in pubs. It would suprise you the amount of people who took the bet. Quite sad really – but it past the time of day.

In case you’re wondering, I gave a list of the Derby winners to an indepedent adjudicator, who could pull me up any time I slipped up – which was rare.

January 22, 2009 at 18:46 #205785Great effort people. Many thanks to those who flew the flag for TRF, much appreciated.
Jeremy –
“Think of our effort as that of a point-to-pointer being rushed straight into Open company after a Maiden win” I’m no further on.

A two year old maiden being thrust straight into a Group 3 – is that what you mean?
January 22, 2009 at 18:57 #205794Zome, some cheerleader you are!
IS THIS BECAUSE I UPSTAGED YOU ALL?!
January 22, 2009 at 19:11 #205798ROUND 1
THE 2007/2008 NATIONAL HUNT SEASONNote: we got 10 on this round. It all went a bit plop soon after, though.
Corm – what’s all this blabber about something called Group 3? Isn’t that something to do with security vans?
