Somebody rang me today looking for details of a competition between American jockeys and British jockeys in the 80s.  I couldn’t remember it at the time and sadly didn’t take down a phone number.
However – in case you read TRF – I have found that there was one on October 21st 1981, at Kempton (whilst Sandown was building their grandstand), and I think Sandown hosted one again the following year.
Amazingly – for a Wednesday in October when the prizemoney to the winners was a paltry 2,100 pounds they got some real stars over for the Chivas Regal sponsored affair.
Laffitte Pincay, Walter Swinburn and Pat Eddery rode the three winners.  The other American riders were Chris McCarron, Steve Cauthen (based here of course), Willie Shoemaker and Jorge Velazquez.
Also just found another one in this series at Sandown on Oct 22nd 1980.  Willie Shoemaker rode a double and Pat Eddery rode the other one.  Other American riders that year were Laffitte Pincay, Angel Cordero, Jorge Velazquez and Steve Cauthen.
On Oct 20th 1982 (when now they have Breeders’ Cup to think about) they came over to Sandown and this time Willie Shoemaker, Paul Cook and Willie Carson were the winning riders.  The other Americans were Cash Asmussen, Steve Cauthen and Eddie Delahoussaye.
In 1983 the American jockeys were Chris McCarron, Sandy Hawley, Cash Asmussen and Steve Cauthen.
In 1985 there was a rest of the world jockeys event which included the likes of Yves St Martin, Brent Thomson, Gianfranco Dettori, Steve Cauthen, Eddie Maple and S Masuzawa at Sandown on September 25th. ÂÂÂ
Saint-Martin, Cauthen and Swinburn were the successful riders.
