Mounty, I remember Just So and Cythere involved in a right slog at Chepstow, probably in 94, may have been a race in memory of the late John Hughes. It was a right slog and Just So nailed him at the end, Cythere had ran his heart out. Old Fiddlers Pike ran in it as well.
Over 6 miles, I’d have fancied Just So to confirm the placings.
December 4, 2010 at 23:10 #331189Fiddlers Pike! That was the other one I was trying to remember – thank you! Rosemary Henderson in full ‘agricultural’ mode.
December 4, 2010 at 23:25 #331192The pair of them would still have been there at the end of 6 miles as well!

Brondersby verses Soba over 4f
December 5, 2010 at 00:19 #331199Jay Trump vs. Arkle 3 mile steeplechase
With all due respect, Miss Woodford; but in the infamous words of your fellow American, John McEnroe – You cannot be serious.

More like a total mis-matched race.
Come on, Jay Trump would have to started racing the day before – and even then he’d be a poor second behind the great one.

I didn’t say Jay Trump would win, but I’d like to see what he could do. It’s a shame that he and Arkle were contemporaries yet never met.
An alternate match: Jay Trump vs. Saluter. 2 races of 3 1/2 mile timber at Great Meadows and at My Lady’s Manor.

Did you mean Brondesbury? (trained by Bill O’Gorman). He was probably the fastest horse I’ve ever seen leaving the stalls. He’d burst out of them.

Grand horse, and an amusing memory rekindled:The 16yo Fiddlers Pike and slightly older Mrs H ran in the ’97 Sporting Index Chase
One of Winstanley’s funnier witticisms when previewing the race in The Sporting Life was (summat like):
Fiddlers Pike should be taking Mrs Henderson around Sainsbury’s on Saturday mornings, not contesting races at Cheltenham
Timeform’s comment on the run was the archetypal
soon left behind when the pace increased having gone with plenty of zest to five out.
As for your threesome of sluggards, well they may have enjoyed a ding-dong battle over the easy 6m at a damp Chepstow, but should they have ever encountered Killeshin over 8m at Towcester, in the mud, in January, in horizontal sleet…well there would have been a long odds-on fav wouldn’t there?
Fiddlers Pike would be coming up to 30 now. Wonder if he’s still alive? The Hendersons emigrated to the sun somewhere if memory serves

December 5, 2010 at 16:55 #3312836m chase on heavy ground at Chepstow – Just So v Cythere v The Risky Viking (the first horse I owned a share in).

Right, just so I’m sure I’ve kept up…
That’s Just So vs Cythere vs The Risky Viking vs Fiddlers Pike vs the later-mentioned Killeshin that you’re proposing.
Yum yum. Throw in Sidbury Hill, Trooper and Kittenkat, and that’s a race made in heaven. An eight-way tie at the end of eight miles, and racing’s the real winner.

PS Drone, from what I remember Rosemary Henderson later moved to New Zealand, though I’m not sure if "Magnus", as she called him, is still alive. The Hendersons’ contribution to cult racehorses isn’t limited to just her National fifth, of course – she either bred or originally trained (or both) none other than subsequent Dr Pritchard mainstay Blazing Batman. I like her.

A slightly classier version of the proposed long-distance slugfests:
Carvill’s Hill v Master Oats over 3 3/4 miles in the Chepstow mud.

Man O’ War v Secretariat
Ruffian v Zenyatta

December 6, 2010 at 12:06 #331384Add Mister Ed and Him of Praise to the slogathon. Maybe Into the Red and Willsford too. Killeshin is a definite though he stayed forever.

Captain Christy v Gloria Victus over 3m at Kempton
December 7, 2010 at 01:01 #331432good one Zilzal; I lamneted on another forum that we have no video of the King George in the 70s. Pendil and Captain Christy would have KS and Dessie a clean pair of heels. Probably, on his day, the Captain was third best to Arkle and Flyingbolt
December 7, 2010 at 01:21 #331434Very inventive matches
and my personal favourite was
Shergar in hooves
versus the mafia
in 390 cubic inch mustangs.
I don’t wish to go off topic
but none of these came near
the best match ever staged
on grass.
the old hare and the old tortoise. The old hare would have won it
but was blown up by an old shell.not a dry eye
in the house
