Just home from a day at Plumpton. What a terrific place it is; great crowd, friendly staff, a lovely buzz to the place – and some superb racing.

A day in the Sussex countryside is always exactly what a townie like me needs, especially towards the end of a gruelling year at the coalface.

The highlight for me was Bryony’s ride from the front on Brave Kingdom in the novices’ chase. Had him bang right at every jump, and rode a tidy finish too.

I’m not looking to reopen the old debate over her situation from a couple of years back, or to inflame the discussion over who rides Bravemansgame at the weekend. All I will say is I’m happy for her to carry my money any time.

At Kempton Park and about to see the 2022 Breeders’ Cup Turf winner take on, among others, stable mate Goldspur who I last sighted at Sandown Park last year.

I hope it went well. I thought it was a good performance from Rebel’s Romance. Not so from Kempton, with races going off late and not much effort to make up for lost time.

    Thanks, CAS.

I had a very enjoyable evening and I think the racecourse staff at Kempton Park are consistently outstanding, so polite and friendly.

The races going off late was bizarre, though, and seemingly little attempt was made to catch up.

I had gone there with zero intention to back Rebel’s Romance, who opened up at 2/5 with William Hill, didn’t look the horse he was at Aqueduct last time out, was returning from a lay-off and all his top form was on turf (though he had Anmaat and Bay Bridge behind him when he won a Novice Stakes at Kempton).

But Rebel’s Romance really impressed me in the paddock, very imposing physically, and looked in great shape.

Goldspur on the other hand, has really failed to develop physically since his 2yo days.

This made the Rebel’s Romance drift to 5/6 (around evens on the machine) hard to fathom and, while he wasn’t my sort of price, I did have a bit on him.

I thought he won well, I also thought Elegant Man, the inexperienced runner up ran a blinder, but I couldn’t make any excuses for Goldspur, who doesn’t look the sort who would be hard to get fit, looked straight enough, might have liked to have led, but if he hasn’t got the pace to get in front of Max Vega is going to struggle to find Pattern races.

It just got progressively colder all night and I’m still warming up this morning!

I do like an almost deserted Kempton under lights, though.

Well done. I would have backed him at that price too – but I had only just switched on RTV and by the time I frantically managed to log on to Betfair it was too late. I missed the start by about two seconds. Trying to get anything on in running was a waste of time.

“I do like an almost deserted Kempton under lights, though.”

It did sound rather quiet! I wondered if Christmas parties might have put a few on the gate but evidently not.

This year I will be watching the racing at home.

    Next stop Chepstow for me.

Travel down Tuesday to give us the opportunity of a leisurely breakfast on Wednesday morning.

A sherry or two Tuesday afternoon and then probably get asked to keep the noise down as I’m screaming home Bravemansgame at kempton and Karl Phillipe in the Rowland Meyrick.

In the old days, did Chezza take the train?

Chezza’s father used to drive Chezza from Hull to Market Rasen and Wetherby (this is shocking, but Chezza cannot clearly remember who won the Rowland Meyrick the year Chezza went – Richdee, perhaps?) on Boxing Day back in the day.

In more recent times Chezza has driven himself to Kempton Park and Wincanton from Basingstoke.

Chezza was lucky enough to be invited into a private box, with bespoke parking right to the entrance, the last couple of times Chezza went to Kempton.

But first time in 2012 (Long Run) Chezza was directed into the car park in the middle of the course and didn’t get out until 6pm – absolutely brutal, over two hours after racing and never again.

Arrived at Aintree ahead of its inaugural Boxing Day fixture. The weather looks to be set fair. I only hope that pesky low sun does not become an issue.

Thanks ID. Yes, it was a good meeting.

It will be interesting to see what the attendance was. It felt quieter than the Old Roan meeting at the end of October, which was marketed as a “Family Fun Day”. The families were mostly absent today, with very few children running around.

I thought there might be a few more people in attendance given that neither Liverpool or Everton were at home. But I suppose it is the first year for this fixture and people around here are perhaps not in the habit of going racing on Boxing Day.

Though Warwick and Uttoxeter are off there is New Year’s Eve Point-to-Point in the UK today at Horseheath in East Anglia (Fairly Famous entered in the Mixed Open) and at Larkhill on Salisbury Plain, where Famous Clermont is expected to run in the Mens Open.

A point to point on New Year’s Eve sounds like an ideal way to see out the year. I think you said Larkhill’s future is secure now?

I have been to Warwick on New Year’s Eve three times, which was always enjoyable. I have only been racing on New Year’s Day once: Lingfield in 1999. Unfortunately there is nothing local to me now.

I find it curious how Catterick always races on both the 28th December and New Year’s Day. Why does it get two fixtures just a few days apart but other tracks get nothing over the festive period?

Yes, Larkhill was given a reprieve after the Ben Wallace intervened.

Famous Clermont and Fairly Famous were both turned over at odds-on today – that’s racing!
