If they planned to buy him I would expect it would be done before the Middle Park not after it.But who knows.Lets face it, it is more fun to have them coming to your yard than competing with you at the sales.
September 30, 2009 at 19:08 #250952Zarkava, I believe that
Most Welcome
, who got disqualified (from 3rd?) in the 2000 Guineas
and came second in the Derby to Reference Point, won a N’ket Nursery. Would probably have been the equivalent of Class II though???Just for fun, I’d like to know of any other Classic horses that ran in Nurseries – it tickles my fancy.
edit: Could someone also confirm the details about Most Welcome? Thankyou
September 30, 2009 at 23:36 #250977I would be grateful for anyone’s thoughts on Godolphin’s U.S. bred Mendip.
He won a class 4 at Kempton easily beating the Micheal Jarvis trained Musaafer who then went on to ‘make all at a canter’ in a class 4 maiden at Pontefract.
I notice Musaafer is entered for the Racing Post Trophy although Mendip does not appear to be entered up anywhere.
According to Oddschecker Mendip is available at 79s on Betfair for the Derby, apart from being a Godolphin horse, is there any other reason why I shouldn’t have a small dabble?
I haven’t read all 19 pages on this thread so I apologize if he’s already been mentioned.
October 1, 2009 at 01:25 #250993Mendip wouldn’t have been entered for the Derby in Nov or Dec 2008, as he was in the States, and Godolphin didn’t buy him until the spring. First opportunity to supplement is next April, I think.
Mostly Americian pedigree – won’t he be better on the All-Weather, or maybe dirt?
On the Conduit Mare Profile, none of the last 20 Derby winners had more than 1 Speed point more than Stamina points ( Page 8 of this thread
)Mendip has 16 Speed points and 9 Stamina Points. (Granddam and great-granddam were both champion sprinters.) Rather rules him out. How about a bet on the Kentucky Derby? Sire won the Florida Derby.
October 1, 2009 at 01:31 #250995Thanks for that Gerald, probably makes sense why he debuted at Kempton…I think I’ll keep my pennies in my pocket for now.
October 1, 2009 at 01:54 #250999Updated Dewhurst entries so I went through the trends again. Please note,
Al Ghazal
Al Zir
Chabal
Esaar
KingsfortMorana
Steinbeck
Viscount NelsonAl Ghazal wasn’t mentioned by Crisford when talking about their top 2yos, Chabal I’m sure will lack the speed for a Guineas, Morana hasn’t got much class in the dam side, Steinbeck seems extremely fragile and I’m not convinced at all he’s that great while Viscount Nelson’s off to run in the BC Juvenile Turf.
This leaves the horses in bold. Please note, of the last 4 English 2000 Guineas winners, 3 ran in either the Champagne or Dewhurst. 5 of the last 9 (Stoute and Godolphin responsible for all the exceptions).
I’ve backed Esaar again for the Guineas, at 150s, and I’m expecting him to win comfortably tomorrow. His entries show him to be extremely well regarded and of those that have run from his maiden since, 4 of 6 finished 1st or 2nd next time out.
Kingsfort I assume won’t run again this season and Al Zir will probably be a runner in the Dewhurst.
October 1, 2009 at 02:52 #251011The winner of Esaar’s debut race, Najd, was the horse that was the first of Godolphin’s five-timer, and he died shortly after, so I’ll try to think of Najd whenever Esaar runs.
Andrew, are you thinking that Mendip might go for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Mile? The Santa Anita surface is fairly similar to Kempton, isn’t it?

If Barry Hills has a better two-year-old than Khattaab I’ll be astounded – 59 about him for the 2000 Guineas looks fair.
October 1, 2009 at 17:30 #251084Little bit strange if Khattaab is that good the money appears to be for Swilly Ferry?
Given that he was taken on for the lead and conceding weight on ground that was probably softer than ideal I thought Nideeb ran very well last time and he will do for me.

She’s unlikely to find her way in to any ante-post classic markets, but Amitola put in a serious performance on debut at Ayr this afternoon.
October 1, 2009 at 18:46 #251100It is interesting that of the three horses you have narrowed it down to, two horses are trained by Godolphin who’s trend for early season form in recent years has been diabolical and that it rules out Irish trained horses – a country that has won 6 of the last 8 renewals.
October 1, 2009 at 21:10 #251133Captain James Cook. His in the betting with Hills for the 2000 guineas at 25/1.Anyone know when he be making his debut
October 1, 2009 at 21:19 #251136I thought i had a handle on these Ballydoyle 2yr olds…and all of a sudden a coouple of complete unknowns have come from nowhere.
Clearwater Bay
Falcon Flight
Flying Cross
His Way
Moby Dick
Rainforest
Star of the showAll entered to pitch up in a decent maiden at Navan won by stable horses 2 out of the last 3 years.
Nvermind a host of 3yr olds i have never heard of be entered up all round the place.
They really are buying yearling foals etc etc in abundance and since this change of tact they have had 2 very successful years.
October 2, 2009 at 00:22 #251174What my I ask Wallace-07 is a yearling foal exactly?

Where does it say that I’ve ruled out the Irish horses?
October 2, 2009 at 03:21 #251204Well I was delighted to see Esaar’s name mentioned today as part of the RP’s dark horses for the Autumn section. Didn’t realise they’d paid $500,000 for him. Really hoping for an impressive performance in the maiden tomorrow followed by a quick step-up to the Dewhurst. I have £4 on him at an average of 145s.
I’ve had £2 on Fighting Brave at 190s. He’s obviously extremely well regarded and I tread very carefully where Aidan O’Brien and trends are concerned, especially when it comes to the Guineas. He could easily be plotting a maiden-Killavullan raid a la Footstepsinthesand and Jupiter Pluvius.
I’ve heard rumours that Markazzi is Stoute’s best 2yo, but on breeding he looks much more like an out-and-out miler rather than the 10f types that have the speed for a mile. Also on foaling dates he’s a bit behind what I’d ideally like to see for the Guineas. Won’t be backing him before he runs in the Million. I must say actually, I’m extremely encouraged by the Million entries. I was worried that the Dewhurst, Jean Luc, Middle Park, etc would lose their appeal to the money bags being handed out by Timeform and Goffs, but it really is full of absolute crap bar Alfred Nobel. Must have about half a dozen maidens, half a dozen who took 3 attempts to break their maiden, not a single horse in the top half won LTO, etc.
Nothing much happened today in terms of 2yos. Morana failed his 2nd attempt to win a maiden so he’s off the Derby list, but he already kind of was on breeding.
All eyes on Lady Of The Desert and Esaar tomorrow, could potentially see the 1000 and 2000 Guineas winner within 1 hour 10 minutes of one another.
