Nice going Jac.
Manaafidh could be back out again Saturday and lost nothing in defeat lto against First Selection neither were stopping so the mile shouldn’t be a problem.Blackbeard to conquer the World
September 3, 2015 at 21:32 #1196119Looking forward to that one Nathan I don’t think we’ll be millionaires backing him though.
Just noticed First Selection has an entry in The Juddmonte at Newmarket 26th September (can’t wait to see
him again and hopefully get some nice pics) where he meets up with Mannaafidh yet again.
He also holds an entry in next years 2000 Guineas, so he’s really highly regarded.
JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...September 4, 2015 at 10:44 #1196655I was at Salisbury yesterday – impressed with La Rioja in the paddock, much the strongest of the fillies and that probably made a big difference on what was very tiring, sticky ground. The favourite is a much more light framed filly and simply couldn’t cope with the conditions.
Best performance of the day though was Ventura Storm in the first, a really hot novice stakes. He’s an imposing colt, already big enough to pass as a 3-y-old and he looked totally at home on the ground and won with plenty in hand. He looks good enough for a step up to Group races at a mile, especially if we continue to race on soft ground – maybe the Royal Lodge at the end of this month.
At a lower level, keep an eye out for Mystikana, a filly from the Tregoning stable. She took my eye beforehand and was beaten by a combination of inexperience, ground and racing on the slowest part of the track, but kept going nicely at the finish to dead heat for 4th. Better ground, or maybe a trip to Kempton, and a step up to a mile will see her competitive in a maiden.
September 4, 2015 at 11:24 #1196695Pascal Bary’s Antonoe is due out next Tuesday and the plan was to step her into Group 3 company for her second start. She fairly stormed home at Deauville but it was a bit hard to evaluate the form because it was a race for fillies who hadn’t run yet.
The runner up at Deauville was the Al Shaqab owned Qemah, trained by J C Rouget, and she started favourite for that race. She was no match at all for Antonoe on the day but she ran at Longchamp yesterday in a 13,000 Euros conditions race where she started a narrow favourite. Qemah won her race by three lengths from an Andre Fabre trained filly Doha Dream. That’s obviously encouraging for Antonoe’s prospects.
Another horse who won on the same card as Antonoe was Alain De Royer Dupre’s Vedevani. This son of Dubawi, out of an Unfuwain mare was a little keen in behind on his debut and took a little bit of time to get the hang of things. He was well on top at the end though and I think he’ll make a big improvement for this effort. If you didn’t see the race, it can be viewed here. They seem to think he’s going to be top class and he’s worth keeping an eye on.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
September 4, 2015 at 14:54 #1196816I haven’t noticed ‘seethesun’ posting regularly after coming here during Royal Ascot and informing us to back George Margusson’s best ever horse he’s had – ‘Any Guest’ which is fancied for the Guineas.
Info passed to him by a close contact with the stable, I’ve curiously followed this horses’ 3 runs (today the 3rd.) and I seriously doubt it will win a seller, Guineas…ha ha and I’m not talking out of pocket just amusement.September 4, 2015 at 15:49 #1196860Best performance of the day though was Ventura Storm in the first, a really hot novice stakes. I was encouraged by Ventura Storm’s win because his form ties in with Recorder from the Haggas stable.
Ventura Storm was 3rd to Recorder on his debut and Recorder went on to win the Acomb at York. The horse who split the pair that day, Culturati, was then second to Ventura Storm, becoming another Godolphin runner to go off a short priced favourite, only to be turned over by a horse he had previously beaten. Culturati is in the opener at Ascot tomorrow and will probably be a warm favourite again.

September 5, 2015 at 13:22 #1197992Another on my short list of 2yo’s to follow runs today Fang trained by Brian Meehan in the 4.00 at Ascot.
Second to none other than Shalaa last time out at Newmarket, never in danger of catching the winner but himself and Nisser together with the winner were eyecatchers in the paddock that day and 9/2 looks appealing.
What a beautiful horse Vedevani is Steve, diffiicult to predict where he will go from there but as you say worth keeping an eye on as is Ventura Storm.Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...September 5, 2015 at 13:51 #1198026Just out of hospital 9 days after massive ( life saving ) heart attack , so go easy on me lads and lasses.
Dawn Of Hope , winner at Ascot today is one to keep on the right side of when contesting the top 2 year old fillie’s staying races.
Didn’t beat much , but looked very impressive nevertheless.

September 5, 2015 at 16:16 #1198115Didn’t see Fang’s race but obviously he needs to be campaigned at 6 furlongs in the future, one more chance for him.
All good wishes to Himself for a speedy recovery and interesting to see how Dawn of Hope fairs next time out.Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...September 5, 2015 at 18:26 #1198226I missed a horse I have been waiting for and was running at Haydock this evening. Quite a while back I was browsing the Highclere website and noticed a son of Zoffany in training with John Gosden. Called Foundation, I thought he looked a good stamp of a colt but obviously I didn’t get the chance to see him in live pictures, having failed to look at Haydock’s card today.
He ran in a mile maiden and ran out a 3 and a half length winner, staying on in good style. Time may show it wasn’t that great a race, Tom Dascombe’s Gambit, who holds a Derby entry and is by New Approach, was the narrow second favourite at 5/4 and the only other horse fancied at all.
Foundation cost 190000 Euros and it must be hoped he can go on to better things moving forward:-
Foundation was out again at Haydock today and despite the presence of higher rated colts in the line up he was a confidently supported favourite today. He was a bit slowly away but was anything but slow at the finish, as he quickened well to win comfortably, giving Manaafidh a four length bigger beating than First Selection had done.
First Selection is rated 100, so a strict form comparison reflects well on Foundation, who came into the race with a Racing Post Rating of 87. He’s clearly at least a stone better than that and surely he’s due a step into Group company and something like the Royal Lodge or Racing Post Trophy.
A very satisfying result for me, because I was ridiculed a bit for suggesting that Foundation had a shout in next years Derby by a local lad, after I watched his first run. I was told “He’s not even in the betting after that race”
He’s in the betting now all right and he’s 16/1 Favourite in a place. To the local lad I sayeth “Up your Tom Titter, with a Potato Fritter”
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
September 5, 2015 at 20:00 #1198276Steve, I agree, it was a very good performance today and he looks a top class prospect.
I do have a big ‘but’ though…that pronounced action of his could restrict how he is campaigned.
What do you think?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laCS7BmfrR0Yes Bobby, there’s a fair bit of knee action there and the usual Epsom questions marks will surface, particularly on top of the ground. John Gosden isn’t exactly one to run them on unsuitable ground either.
Mind you, if you look at the runner up today, his action made Foundation look silky smooth in comparison.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
September 7, 2015 at 09:38 #1199296Pascal Bary’s Antonoe is due out next Tuesday and the plan was to step her into Group 3 company for her second start. She fairly stormed home at Deauville but it was a bit hard to evaluate the form because it was a race for fillies who hadn’t run yet.

This should be a good race as Andre Fabre’s Gherdaiya is also due to run and there is Ella Diva who is 4/4 and Mark Prescott has Alinstante who is 3/4 in her career but stepping up markedly from Chelmsford at 1/10F last time.
Early forecast has Antonoe and Gherdaiya as 2/1 joint favs but the worry for both fillies would be that the ground is soft tomorrow and neither has run on that type of going yet. Antonoe seemed a good moving filly so I just wonder how she will get on. She raced prominently last time though and that might be the right place to be if it is soft.
As usual, it seems like we won’t get any actual odds until about five minutes before the race. I think these bookies are getting worse.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
September 8, 2015 at 10:02 #1200116There is an unraced colt worth a look at Leicester today.
The opening race sees a horse of Barry Hills’ Muntazah sitting as odds on favourite and he’s got good form there, having been runner up to Manaafidh on his debut and then being a slightly disappointing fifth to Recorder when favourite next time. Recorder went on to win the Acomb Stakes at York before picking up a season ending injury, so it looks like the disappointment may be seen in better perspective now.
The interesting one for me, even though I am not a fan of the operation, is the Godolphin runner Chess Master. This son of Shamardal out of Cassandra Go cost 1,700,000 Guineas as a yearling and lines up chasing just £5000 in prize money today. He’s a 5/1 shot today and sometimes the first time up seems the best time to catch these Godolphin 2yo runners so he shouldn’t really want for fitness.
It’s certainly essential to check him out to see if he might be a future king in the making. If he has the ability we can rook the bookies and have a knight to remember. If not, the boys in blue will need to pawn their possessions to recoup the purchase price and Sheikh Mohammed will hear the report that “Chess Master was pretty stale mate”.
Later on the card Sepal should put her experience to use and take the beating in the 5.05 race after being only 6th when fav for a Newmarket maiden. At 2/1 I’d be with her today, although not necessarily long term.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

13/8 seems the general price for Antonoe this morning and I would be wiring in heavy on that.

Nice and easy for Muntazah and nice compliments to Recorder and Foundation who have form lines with him. Chess Master ran OK on his first start, he never really settled properly and looked a bit awkward as he ended up out wide on his own in the closing stages, keeping on for third but no match at all for the winner. Looking at the 1.7 million guinea purchase, he was outclassed in physique by the winner today, who looks a much more substantial stamp of a colt. There is little on this evidence to suggest Chess Master will prove worth the hefty price tag and he’ll need to make some progress over the winter to live up to the weighty expectations that sort of money demands.
Muntazah may well have been unsuited by the soft ground when 5th to Recorder, or it may be that Recorder and some others in that race were decent sorts. With Barry Hills retiring, the son of Dubawi out of Rumoush, who was 4th in Snow Fairy’s Oaks, may be a useful acquisition for another stable.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
