The forum is following you off the cliff at the moment with the form you are in Trip. So just let us know when you are confident over this Confident Kid and we’ll rush to the piggy bank……

It won’t last Nathan, I already rushed in too soon on Shalaa for the 2000 in the heat of the moment, when JG has already said he goes for the Commonwealth Cup so maybe he’s just going to be a very exciting sprinter…keep those pennies safe but just for fun lets keep an eye on Confident Kid and see how he turns out this season.

It sounded to me as if they will give the Guineas a miss with Shalaa Jac. It’s bad news for your wager of course but at least they have made the decision now and won’t be swithering as the Hannon team did this spring with Ivawood and Tiggy Wiggy, heading for the Guineas and then inevitably, it seemed, trying sprint trips and failing there as well.

Visually I thought Shalaa might get 7f but they would probably need to alter tactics and if the horse is a ball of speed and likes to get on with it then trying to foist hold-up tactics on him may simply sour his enthusiasm.

As for Confident Kid, I would probably tend to go with Nathan’s thinking and predict that he might line up as favourite for The Winter Derby in 2017 as a four year old ;-)

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

After Tony Curtis doing us a favour 1st time up, it’s the turn of Humphrey Bogart to get off the mark on his second start for the Hannons. Third at Chelmsford over 6f he steps up to 7f and should improve on that.

1.45 Doncaster Humphrey Bogart (Here’s Looking At You Kid)

Nice 2yo maiden at Naas today with London vs Hearald the dawn. And happy to see MOONLIGHT MAGIC a NR this horse is very well bred and is no second string Manning should be on next time.

LANDOFHOPEANDGLORY was nice winner at Galway not beat anything but looked a smart colt stay at a 1m this year before going middle distances next year.

HERALD THE DAWN was impressive the other day may even step up to a 1m this year as well any thoughts on him from you guys.

The runner up and third, London and Sunglider, both ran behind Shogun the previous time. London was beaten further by Shogun, whereas Sunglider went down by a similar margin to both colts.

Herald The Dawn is obviously going the right way but for now I would prefer to be with Shogun as I feel there is much more to come with him.

I am encouraged that the two horses from Shogun’s race ran well afterwards and it is helpful for my other prospect Clear Skies, who I am convinced would have finished ahead of Sunglider in another few strides in Shogun’s race.

David Wachman’s filly is entered in the Loder Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday and that looks more ambitious than the casual maiden, being a race worth almost £20000. She runs at 7f if she takes her chance but I am sure a mile will be what suits her this year.

I would be interested in a small bet at 50/1 on Clear Skies for the Oaks (SkyBet)

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Aidan O’Brien’s Port Douglas was very disappointing when odds-on at Tipperary this evening. Sent off at 8/11 he could only manage 4th behind Waipu Cove, a five time raced horse rated 93.

Port Douglas’ first race hasn’t thrown up a winner and neither has his second race, won by Sanus Per Aquam, who was beaten by Deauville next time.

Jim Bolger’s Sanus Per Aquam had been favourite for both the 2000 Guineas and The Derby but the form is looking a bit ropey now.

The weekend sees Buratino and Air Force Blue line up in a rematch from the Coventry but it is by no means a two horse race. It should be very informative viewing in the Phoenix stakes at the Curragh on Sunday, where mark Johnson’s colt is narrow 9/4 favourite at the moment.

Emotionless looked really useful for Godolphin at Newmarket this evening running out a ready winner. The usual caveats of what he beat and Godolphin 2yo runners following up next time apply though. He has to be a better bet at 33/1 for the 2000 Guineas than Port Douglas at the same odds though.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

I missed a horse I have been waiting for and was running at Haydock this evening. Quite a while back I was browsing the Highclere website and noticed a son of Zoffany in training with John Gosden. Called Foundation, I thought he looked a good stamp of a colt but obviously I didn’t get the chance to see him in live pictures, having failed to look at Haydock’s card today.

He ran in a mile maiden and ran out a 3 and a half length winner, staying on in good style. Time may show it wasn’t that great a race, Tom Dascombe’s Gambit, who holds a Derby entry and is by New Approach, was the narrow second favourite at 5/4 and the only other horse fancied at all.

Foundation cost 190000 Euros and it must be hoped he can go on to better things moving forward:-

Another silly price. Sanus Per Aquam beats Port Douglas by 4 or so lengths then loses out next time up. Add to that the soft ground which Waipu Cove also had when hosing up last time out and you have a completely unbackable favourite.
He must have been fairly heavily backed as I remember seeing him at 6/5 half an hour before the race.

Brian Meehan thinks Blue Bayou will be very hard to beat in the Sweet Solera stakes at Newmarket tomorrow. She was running on strongly behind Illuminate at the same course last month in a group 2 and would have won if she had another 20 yards to work with.
She still has to prove that she can progress from that up to 7f but the noises coming from the yard are very positive. Good to firm ground, back at Newmarket, 15/8 looks a steal to me.
The questions still need to be answered though and there is always more of a risk with some unexposed runners in the race.

Hard to evaluate the form because it is a race for unraced fillies but today’s Prix Des Marettes at Deauville threw up a seriously good looking winner in the form of Pascal Bary’s Antonoe.

Frankie was in France today and was riding the Al Shaqab filly Qemah, who is a daughter of Danehill Dancer and started 2/1 favourite for the race.

The distance was 7f 100y and the ground was good. Antonoe started 83/10 in the betting and she is a daughter of First Defence and is a very early 26th January foal.

I have to say she blew me away by the way she went and took this race by the scruff of the neck, drawing right away powerfully to win by six and a half lengths from the favourite in second. She looks an absolute beast based on this and the time was almost two seconds faster than the 2yo colts race earlier on the card, won by Alain De Royer-Dupre’s Dubawi colt Vedevani (7/5 Fav)

Of course we will only know in the fullness of time what the form is worth but encouraging that she dismantled her field in such fashion. Owned by Khalid Abdullah, I will be keen to see where she goes next.

Pascal Bary commented. “I have to say, she was impressive. She loves fast ground and ought to improve even more, so if all is well we will bring her back for the G3 Prix d’Aumale [over a mile at Chantilly Sept. 8]”

Here’s the video of the full race:-

I like Blue Bayou for this race Chivers.

I made her a 6/4 shot on my own fag packet book for the race and 15/8 looks generous considering the relative form of the contenders.

I know Jonibake likes Hawksmoor here and she was mighty impressive on her debut. She could be anything but this is a big step up today. The second in her maiden went on to win twice afterwards but it was a maiden race and a nursery she took, so the bare form isn’t great.

Bint Al Reem was tipped by Triptych on the forum and won impressively rewarding Jac’s faith in her. Another “Could be anything” horse but I am always wary of Godolphin winning 2yo’s on their second start. One thing with her is that she is decent odds today, whereas some of them go off way short and get turned over in their following race.

Fireglow has the second best form in the race in my opinion. She also ran behind Illuminate but was beaten further than Blue Bayou was. In her favour is that she has already won at the trip in listed company and the Johnston stable have some hot youngsters this season. On form I think she represents much better value at 4/1 than Bint Al Reem at the same price, or Hawksmoor at 5/1 but they have the scope to bridge the gap.

The Racing Post ratings for the leading four contenders are as follows:

    Blue Bayou 107
    Fireglow 98
    Bint Al Reem 82
    Hawksmoor 82

That’s a fair bit of catching up for the once raced fillies to do.

Besharah split Illuminate and Blue Bayou in the old Cherry Hinton last time. She finished ahead of a well regarded Easton Angel that day. Besharah dotted up in group 3 company next time and that looks good enough for me.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

A couple of nice 2yo races at The Curragh tomorrow.

The opening race is the maiden won last year by one time Derby favourite but big disappointment John F Kennedy. Aidan O’Brien has a couple of Galileo colts here and they are well entered up. Joseph is riding Cole Porter and you would assume that he is the one who they hope will be providing music to the ears of the Coolmore clan. The plan for the race will be for Joseph to tell the the other jockeys Don’t Fence Me In, before telling his mount “Let’s Do It”, followed swiftly by “I Get A Kick Out Of You” and leaving the field trailing with a cry of “Every Time, We Say Goodbye”. No doubt, in the post race interview Aidan will tell us “Anything Goes” for Cole Porter this season.

Later on the card Clear Skies swerves the Loder fillies race, not surprising, as I expected a mile is what she probably needs to show her in the best light. In her absence Aidan’s How High The Moon catches the eye. This sister to Diamondsandrubies appeared in the Oaks betting as one of the favourites recently and it is assumed they think a bit of her. Santa Monica is one of those prominent in the betting here but has not managed better than 4th in four starts so far. She ran behind Guineas and Oaks favourite Tanaza last time and that will be the guideline into this race. Santa Monica is rated 95, which sets a decent standard in this sort of company but with her 8444 form figures it is one of those races where you hope an unraced one pops up makes a name for themselves.

Later on the more exposed 2yo’s battle it out in the Phoenix Stakes. It’s hard to split Buratino and the more lightly raced Air Force Blue on the Coventry form for me and I see little value in the odds. I can make some sort of case for forgiving Rockaway Valley his beaten favourite tag from last time and chancing him at 12/1 here. Those are big odds for a horse who ran the second favourite here (Airforce Blue) to a neck on his debut when an unconsidered 25/1 shot. He bolted in next time before looking somewhat ill at ease behind Painted Cliffs next time. A fascinating race with a 12/1 speculation on Rockaway Valley the fun option for me.

    Nice card for 2yo fans.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

I can’t ignore the chance to back Buratino for this one. The only concern there is the ground conditions with it looking likely to stay good to yielding.
It is a tricky one as there are some scattered heavy showers about but there is also a lot of warm breezy weather which will dry the track considerably if no rain hits the Kildare area.

Buratino beat Air Force Blue at Royal Ascot but many expect AFB to mount a bigger challenge seeing as it is only his 3rd race of his career. The victory for Mark Johnston’s colt was super impressive though when riding on the bit before cruising clear when the button was pushed.

Mark Johnston deserves a group 1 success to his name this season and this has to be his best chance.
