Very nice start to her career from How High The Moon. She came from a fair way back and really picked up in the closing furlong to come away without much fuss at all really. She’ll get a mile this year and for now she must be one of the favourites for the Oaks I would say. There is 25/1 on Oddschecker but I doubt you will be offered that if you ring up somehow.

Earlier Cole Porter ran a funny sort of race, he travelled well up to 3f out and then struggled to pick up. Looked like he might end up about 6th but then ran on late for 4th place. I don’t think he’s the fastest horse I have ever seen and maybe he’s a real stayer in the making.

I reckon Aidan will be “Listen, Delighted” about How High The Moon.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

That looked a Guineas winner in waiting with Airforce Blue today. Did it in the style you would want, a la Gleneagles, coming right through to go away.

Buratino has perhaps stopped improving now and has too many runs for my liking to be a Guineas contender. Just something about Mark Johnston that doesn’t inspire me to back his horses for Classics.

Some 16/1 left on Oddschecker for Airforce Blue but I doubt you will be entertained at those odds. I would take anything 10/1 or bigger. He looks the best contender by some way to my eyes for Newmarket in May. A fine stamp of a colt who will go on progressing and a worthy favourite for the 2000 Guineas now.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Yeah Buratino had a fair amount of experience behind him going into the Coventry and Air Force Blue has rapidly gone on for his 3rd start this year.
The game was up as soon as he travelled close to the leaders, very nice. AOB not had many winners of this particular race, just 14 of the last 18

Steve any thoughts on GHERDAYLIA for 1000 guineas trained by Andre Fabre is 2 from 2 she is no idea where she go next though.

I was looking at her in the Guineas betting and looked at her form but I haven’t actually seen her races yet Darren.

I will try to catch up with the races and any information I can find later on and will get back to you.

Just for the crack I tried to translate an article I found about her on a French language website. Let’s just say the translation wasn’t very good and was unintentionally quite funny and absurd. Here is that translation.

Found under a sun, a language that is final and won. New and favorite, Gherdaiya (5) was preceded by favorable and noise are needed before Nomadic (3) that she had known the competition. His mother had won First Fleet in silks of Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum’s Marseille Fillies’ Cup in 2001. Gherdaiya French Navy’s own sister (Shamardal / First Fleet), Group 3 winner, already trained by Andre Fabre but under cloak Godolphin before winning the English staff of the jacket where he still collected the success of listed and group 3, especially this spring. With Al Shaqab Racing silks, the filly will stay at the Chantilly trainer and quickly rise through the ranks.

If anyone can tell me what “Staff of the Jacket under Cloak” is all about then they are better equipped than me. It all brings back memories of the Japanese to English translation on the early 1980’s computer game Galaxians, where we were told “Be shoot at the alien to control the space rocket”

Catch you later and the horse is Gherdaiya (No L in the name)

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

    Challenge accepted. :mail:

“Under the cloak Godolphin” could be in the colours of / under the banner of Godolphin.

“English staff of the jacket” is I think something to do with winning in English company (staff?) for Godolphin, or for their English yard (presuming that jacket is shorthand for a reference to the owner, in the same way we might say silks).

So a less literal translation of that sentence might be:

Gherdaiya (Shamardal/First Fleet) is a full sister to French Navy, a Group 3 winner for Andre Fabre who has gone on to success in Listed and Group 3 company in England after being transferred to Godolphin’s ownership.

I’ll be keeping an eye on her after that effort :-)

I found this video of Gherdaiya’s second race.

Only the closing stages are shown but it gives an idea of her abilities. She travels strongly on the outside and is only ever ridden hands and heels. Always doing enough it was a nice win but I wouldn’t agree with the French report I saw that said she won “Unopposed”

A scopey looking filly by Shamardal there is probably much more to come from her but there will need to be and with the usual doubt about French horses coming to Newmarket I wouldn’t be backing her for Newmarket at 20/1

For some reason new firm on the block 10Bet have her in the 2000 Guineas betting, they were the firm who had Golden Horn their Leger favourite. Seems like they need a new horse odds compiler!

    Here’s the race:-

Gherdaiya looks very impressive Steve, no idea who she was running against..LOl.

Back to sunny Newmarket tomorrow I’m hoping a little 2yo double will come home in the shape of Blossomtime in the 1.40 who looks set to reap her revenge on Holy Grail. Blossomtime was given a dreadful ride by her apprentice jockey Marc Monaghan who usually rides for Marco Botti. She missed the break and then managed to get squeezed for room, she was running on at the finish and even with top weight tomorrow she is better off at the weights with Holy Grail, expect a good run from In Ken’s Memory also (Ew).
Dheban seems the class 2yo of the race in the 3.25 and with no Areen and Ravenhoe in the field, if he can settle this time he should win.
Look out for Dean Ivory’s beautifully bred filly Tesoro (Galileo) to fill the places.
Lots of 2yo races at Newbury but I have only studied Newmarket as I am there tomorrow, fingers crossed the rain keeps away.

I don’t feel there’s value in Gherdaiya for the 1000 Guineas, especially with the confidence growing behind Lumiere. I tend not to back French fillies ante-post and we saw with Ervedya this season that even fillies with a great chance on form sometimes get left at home.

Talking of Lumiere, she has been supplemented for the Lowther and was 2/1 favourite on the first show of betting I saw for the York contest. This is a big step up for Lumiere, she was a terrifically impressive winner of her maiden but that wasn’t much of a race by the look of it, with the 3rd and 4th both getting thumped next time out and the other runners to come from the race getting well tanked as well.

The Lowther will be far more competitive. Betting seems to suggest Illuminate won’t be running, as she is a whopping 6/1 in the betting. That seems crazy having a maiden winner 2/1 and an unbeaten group winner with franked form available at triple the odds.

Besharah ran Illuminate close before running out a ready winner next time. She has seemed suited by running at 6f after failing to go with Acapulco at Royal Ascot over 5f. It has to be noted that she ran into a horse who is red hot favourite for the Nunthorpe now and she ran Illuminate to a nose, with Blue Bayou just behind. That’s rock solid form and she is not going to be bothered if the rains do hit York, because it was soft when she readily won at Newmarket last time. The third horse that day, Whatdoiwantthatfor, won a Listed race at Newbury yesterday and I think Besharah is an each-way bet to nothing at 5/1.

Lumiere is exciting and could be anything but she’s skinny in my opinion, currently rated 90 to Besharah’s 109 on Racing Post Ratings.

I haven’t looked at the 2yo races much today because of the soft ground. In the Newmarket Nursery I prefer Bahaarah who won more narrowly last time than looked likely at one stage. Runner up Honorina got beaten next time but was facing an odds on Jeremy Noseda filly that day. I like the fact that Bahaarah has won at the trip and I expect her to have progressed in the four weeks since her last run. At 7/1 I feel confident she will be in the frame.

The maiden later is one I want to be against the favourite in. Dheban ran in a maiden that worked out really well but the form of his next start has been let down badly, apart from Areen’s second to Washington DC. Even then, Areen was disappointing next time and Ravenhoe has lost his way in five runs since. I just pushes the alarm bells for me, along with the 94 days absence since his last run. I would side with John Gosden’s Nomadic, owned by Godolphin, as I don’t think he would need to be too special to make a winning debut.

Hope the ground stays decent, unlike the mire everywhere else.

Good luck and enjoy your day Jac.

Bahaarah won readily at 8/1. Helped make up for some of the ante-post withdrawals picked earlier this week.

Dheban folded like a concertina and finished stone last today. He looked a bad favourite to me. Gosden’s horse was disappointing, although he will probably improve. It’s always disappointing for me when a five times raced maiden wins and Shadow Game coming here rated 78 doesn’t say a lot for the form.

Gun Case won this maiden last year and is currently rated 76 so it doesn’t look like this years lot were much better, thus far anyway.

I knew the writing was on the wall for Blossomtime Steve when she came into the paddock with no horses in front of her and wouldn’t parade until she could walk behind another horse, exactly the way she ran her race, Adam Kirby got her out of the stalls pretty sharp and for a couple of furlongs she was going well, then she wouldn’t pass horses and seemed to prefer to stay covered up in the pack…I wouldn’t be backing her again anytime soon. In Ken’s Memory looked a picture in the paddock, a big leggy filly with a strong backend and she was well backed but ran poorly. The winner Hannon’s Bahaarah is worth following as she has progressed nicely since winning a class 5 maiden and looked as though there was more in the tank.
You’re right Dheban was a bad favourite, he was keen to post and when he came out of the stalls I think he was plane spotting for most of the race, silly boy. Tesoro looked a decent filly in the paddock but didn’t live up to her price tag and Johnston’s winner Shadow Game won his maiden at last after 5 tries.
Hannon got called into the Steward’s room after the race to explain Dheban’s bad run.
At least we have two 2yo’s not to follow any time soon, a lot of growing up to do between the pair of them. Jac

Just thought I’d add this picture of the winning filly BAHAARAH (Ifraaj) she is worth a note as she won that Class 2 Nursery Handicap quite cosily and worth going into the notebook.

The Stewards were told that Dheban ran too free. I really wonder if it is worth bothering asking trainers for an explanation at all. The Vet said there were no abnormalities detected and trainers can just trot out any excuse that comes to mind, or just claim they haven’t got a Scooby why the horse ran badly either.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Steve did you see UNICORN last week if you stop race after 7f he won by a head but that final furlong where he went right away was a impressive final furlong split.Still green as well will get better a early 33/1 derby horse for me.Though still a stack of unraced horses waiting for.

I watched Unicorn Darren and I was quite taken with him. The way the race panned out I thought we were set for a ding dong battle between him and the Jim Bolger runner in the final furlong but it was Unicorn who drew away to win well, looking like a real middle distance contender for next year.

I have a feeling that perhaps Bolger’s horse was weakening at the same time as Unicorn began to put his stamina to use but a nice performance all the same.

The potential coincidence of having a Derby winner called Golden Horn, followed by one called Unicorn, had me checking the Derby betting but he wasn’t quoted at the time. The following day one firm put him in at 33/1 for Epsom. It is really early days but he looks a good sort.

Unicorn was favourite on his debut but was beaten 5l, however it was soft at Galway that day. He holds a National Stakes entry but I suspect a mile will be his game this year. The sort who could pop up in the Racing Post Trophy but O’Brien has so many who could head there.

I am still waiting for San Francisco to appear and am encouraged that O’Brien’s horse has appeared in the 2000 Guineas betting at 25/1. He’s a full brother to Tapestry and has group entries in mid September. You would think he would need to make his debut fairly soon if he is to keep one of those engagements.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
