I’m with Peter on this I don’t feel Ultragold is a non stayer he didn’t look particularly tired in the Becher and with 11 stone on his back he certainly wasn’t stopping.
As for Always Waining the lighting fast ground and warm sun would have suited him down to the ground in 2011 why the handicapper have the last place in the lineup to Golden Kite is anyone’s guess.January 30, 2019 at 20:19 #1394326“Thought” is the key word there. He’s subsequently finished a staying on third in the Becher over 3, 2 and a very creditable fifth in the Classic Chase over 3, 5. I reckon if asked again he’d be less inclined to play down the horse’s ability to see out further.
January 30, 2019 at 22:21 #1394340Now that we know the entries, these four would form my early shortlist, but I’m sure I’m not alone in expecting it to change in the coming weeks.
I love the build up to this.
Noble Endeavour
Mall Dini
Rathvinden
PolidamJanuary 31, 2019 at 06:09 #1394362Have backed 3 for this with bet365
NOBLE ENDEAVOUR – Really Really fancy him for this.If Elliott gets him back to his best I’m confident he will go close. His jumping will need to improve from his Beecher. He’s running in the Irish gold cup if the ground holds up, and think they will try and get a few more pounds off before the weights come out. Expect him to have a rating 151-149. I have gone over board and bet smashed him in so many EW multiplies at 50/1. NOBLE ENDEAVOUR IS MY NAP
DON POLI- I was really keen on him until his last hurdle run. Looks like he hasn’t come back to anywhere near the same horse I once was. I thought he loved the aintree fences Elliot has massive job to get him right on th day. Not overly confident now. Cashed out a few bets and only have him in 1.
Give me a copper- Backed today at 66s EW. He’s been entered in the Gold Cup, therefore Connections must think he is well handicapped off 145. Lacks expirence but trained by a master. Will run in Sandown this weekend weather permitting.
Others I fancy but haven’t backed yet:
UPFORREVIEW
MALL DINIJanuary 31, 2019 at 07:23 #1394364Traffic Fluide is the only horse I am interested in for the national at this stage. My 2nd favourite horse in training. Think he is perfect for this race.
January 31, 2019 at 07:51 #1394366The main trio I’m interested in for this are:
– Abolitionist (already backed at 40/1)
– Step Back
– The Last SamuriJanuary 31, 2019 at 09:54 #1394370Mall Dini hasn’t even won a chase. Would be a ginormous stat bust as it stands.
January 31, 2019 at 10:27 #1394374Yes Mike, a Grand National winner who’s never won a Chase, that would never happen would it, certainly not in the last two years anyway.
January 31, 2019 at 10:30 #1394376Up For Review will go Irish nash i would be think with the euro on offer in that race now.
Rathvinden one i’m warming to massively, potentially running over hurdles this weekend is interesting.
January 31, 2019 at 10:46 #1394378I can’t have Rathvinden now. Was really keen at the start of the season, but I can’t have him starting his season so late. All bar Ballabriggs in recent years have had at least one run in the first half of the season before going on to win the National.
January 31, 2019 at 11:09 #1394382My main concern about Ultragold is if the ground was proper Spring ground – i really doubt he could retain his prominent position and stay the distance
Lake View Lad is still decent value, considering he’s one of the most consistent horses in the race and with a progressive profile over suitable distances
I’ve not given up on Master Dee yet, although a strong performance prior to April is required
Abolitionist has probably spent the last few months being schooled for the race
I’m surprised 33s is still available for Walk In The Mill
January 31, 2019 at 11:37 #1394386This is no normal year Peter, ground has caused havoc for plenty. Stats not a huge influencer on me TBH.
A potential issue this year is if Bristol De Mai runs. Be a lot of jocks starving themselves to make 10 stone.
January 31, 2019 at 12:56 #1394388That is a fair point, Kev. I need stats to narrow the field otherwise it’s a needle in a haystack!
I’d be amazed if they go ahead with Bristol De Mai in this.
Walk In The Mill and Auvergnat are two I’m seriously considering. Both tick plenty of boxes and don’t look too harshly treated for their wins over the winter.
January 31, 2019 at 14:03 #1394397oh yeh kris, I forgot about Rule The World. Good spot.
January 31, 2019 at 14:29 #1394400Red Rum 77. If Singlefarmbloodypayment(BF) wins then I’m giving up the sport as it will prove I clearly know nothing about it.
athepost. Can you explain why you believe that Give Me A Copper, who has only beaten one horse in a chase in its life (and that was in Nov 2017), can win the Grand National? I’m baffled.
January 31, 2019 at 20:40 #1394430Had a serious look through these, and still bloody difficult list to work out.
On the plus side, the market on Betfair is unusually tight, so less of a temptation to build a book for now, so sticking with Missed Approach for the time being.
The others on the shortlist I’ll no doubt continually change my mind over, but these guys would be high on the list, with only Sandymount Duke added from the early look yesterday…..
Auvergnat
General Principle
Noble Endeavour
Pairofbrowneyes
Sandymount Dukewhile these guys would be backups….
Impulsive Star
Mall Dini
Tea For Two
Up For ReviewDefinitely a race to hold back on for now.
January 31, 2019 at 22:14 #1394447I wouldn’t risk a cent until I knew ELegant Escape’s situation here
