Love this race, but record in it isn’t great, so very happy to hold fire until final decs. Can’t remember the last time a race like this looked so murky at this stage.

On first glance, Ptit Zig, and Caroles Destrier look to have enough on their plate, in a slog like this, but at the same time, they would be miles better than the rest of these. Nicholls is no stranger to landing this, and though it looks a strange entry for Ptit Zig, the 20’s still looks a fair price, for a horse who not too long ago, was chasing Vautour home. To be fair, not that much has went right for him since, but he’ll handle the ground alright, and if I was to have an early go, he’d be high on the shortlist to place at that price. Yes, his jumping can be an issue, but thought he shaped ok last time, and he’s a very interesting entry. Caroles Destrier chased home Native River last term at Chepstow, and that’s very decent form. He must have a fair chance off of 149, based on that run, but I just wonder if his whole campaign is geared around Aintree. Shortlist material nonetheless.
There’s obviously a realistic chance that Ptit Zig might not take up this option, but crucially, if Caroles Destrier stands his ground, then he’ll keep the weight down for his stablemate, Kansas City Chief. He does have a question mark over this trip, he’s very inconsistent, and he was a bit flat at Wincanton last time, but he does have a few runs in the past that would bring him in to this, not least his very impressive win at Punchestown, in a decent enough handicap, just over a year ago. It can be a bit lazy just to assume that being owned by Tony Bloom, he’ll be a plot horse for something or other, but there’s no getting away that he was an interesting purchase for him, and off of his current mark, it looks as if he could work him in some where. He looks worthy of a second look here, and he’s the one I was most tempted with at 16’s.
Plenty of question marks then for him, despite my interest, and a more straightforward one for the shortlist is Cogry. He still looks on a fair mark for his ability, and considering that win at Cheltenham in November, this looks perfect. Seems to have got his jumping together, and the trip will pose little problems. No shame in coming up short at Newbury, and the 10’s looks very fair to me.
I’ll wait and see what Kerry Lee declares here, no surprise if all of hers head here, and she just has to be respected, while Mysteree, and particularly Emperors Choice, are both interesting, having not done a full shift at Chepstow. This is the perfect race for Emperors, and he should be bang there if none the worse for his his fall, while a change of tactics might see Mysteree in a better light.
A real dark horse could be Indian Castle, who I thought ran a cracker behind What A Moment at Cheltenham, and his run at the track before that wasn’t too shabby either, and he’s clearly came back from his extended layoff in good heart, and for a trainer who’s having a great time of it this season, he must have a sporting chance here, and he certainly looks very very well treated. 16’s looks a great price.
Another trainer who’s had a fine time of it this year is Anthony Honeyball, and the last two runs of Cresswell Breeze suggest that there’s a decent chance that that form could continue here.
They’re the ones that catch my eye at this stage, and I’m definitely waiting, though if pushed, then at the prices, I would side with……….
Ptit Zig Ew 20’s
Cogry Win 10’s
Kansas City Chief Ew 14’s
Indian Castle Win 16’sThe prices of Ptiz Zig & Indian Castle look very tempting, but just not tempting enough right now.

January 10, 2018 at 17:02 #1336778Aye….Renamed…GARDENERS WORLD HANDICAP CHASE.
Remove top two, completely different race,Impossible without overnight decs.
Like KCC and IC,had the latter down wanting decent ground, not so sure looking back.
Accurate as ever VTC…..holding pattern at mo.
January 10, 2018 at 17:50 #1336781Quite like cresswell breeze for this, the 8/1 will probably tempt me enough
Honeyballs yard in good form
Will also back sir mangan @ 7/1, could still have another 7 or so lbs improvement over fences and if he can get the trip i think he will be thereabouts
January 10, 2018 at 18:09 #1336783Yeah Flyers, absolutely no way I’m parting with a penny on it, and even after final decs, I reckon I’ll tread warily.
January 11, 2018 at 11:30 #1336850Definitely Cogry for me here, and if I can get some place concessions around the 10-1, I would like that
January 11, 2018 at 22:44 #1336948Unlikely to see a bigger bunch of unreliable sorts than this lot

Now to the Horses
Indian Castle…….hit double figures recently, judging by recent results,10 must be the new 8,not uncommon in many female changing rooms I am led to believe.
He has had his problems, off for eighteen months, the williams yard have been able to run him twice towards the end of 2017,both times he has shown he retains plenty ability.
Leonard has been aboard the last twice, arguably not got the best of tunes out of him.His best runs have always been up with the pace,he is a fine jumper if left to his own devices.
Handicap wise he looks very fairly treated off 127,and gets the first time visor here.Ground wise he is not that easy to work out,he does have some back form on deeper ground with his previous trainer. The McCain yard were so out of form at the time, they diversified into the oven ready chip market,a wise move some would say.
Distance remains an unknown,he has been tried before over longer trips,In the hope that he can confirm his recent well being,he looks a likely player to me.
Around the 14/1 mark at present, there are plenty dangers lurking,I do like him though.
GL to those playing
January 11, 2018 at 23:15 #1336952Couldn’t have said it better myself. Indian Castle looks a decent bet at the prices.
January 11, 2018 at 23:47 #1336958I have backed two in this CRESSWELL BREEZE at 7/1 and TOPPER THORNTON at 16/1.
Cresswell has ran really promisngly the last twice and could still be well handicapped and Topper ran well behind Benbens at Sandown last time without ever being put into the race and could be a big price.
January 12, 2018 at 00:15 #1336962Another race where I’m glad I waited, and the absence of Ptit Zig, and Kansas City Chief make things a lot clearer. Particularly happy, as those pair would probably have been the picks if I played early.
Went win only on Cogry at 10’s, and though I missed that 16’s on Indian Castle, the 14’s is still decent, and hopefully the pair of them can be in there fighting at the end.
January 12, 2018 at 02:46 #1336971This was the race that sent me down the ‘One For Arthur wins the national’ route last year.
He was unexposed over the distance and the step up in trip proved in this race to suit.
Is there another with that potential to improve for the step up here? Who knows. But that will be what I look for in the next 24 hours when trying to find my winner.
January 12, 2018 at 09:27 #1336987Have added on the road @20/1, didnt think they would send him out straight after last week
January 12, 2018 at 10:25 #1336990Krackatoa King will probably have my money, so will be the one to avoid!
January 12, 2018 at 12:55 #1337005The ground may of firmed up a bit for him but at a price,i like emperors choice @14s. Been bang outta form for 2 seasons until his win 2 starts back. Crept in at the foot of the weights for the Welsh national and a bucket load of cash came for the horse a few mins before the off – only to fall at the 1st. Venettia must think she’s still got the old boy well handicapped and in rude health. Could do with a deluge from the sky though.
January 12, 2018 at 17:10 #1337041I’ve no idea. That’s my conclusion.
I’ll probably back something for interest for when I get home from the footy but it’s a nightmare of a betting proposition from what I can see.
January 12, 2018 at 17:27 #1337047On KRACKATOA KING at 10/1 only bet here
January 12, 2018 at 19:58 #1337075Had an ante post for Krackatoa King for the Welsh, so I’d better back him for this…
January 13, 2018 at 02:47 #1337159Done Indian Castle for my multiples
