Can not believe the betting here!
Caravaggio too short, worth a lay bet @ 11/10 and hope to back it once lengthening.
Tasleet far too big, now backed it to win four figures @ 11.5/1, on the expectation of laying a bit back when it shortens.
Harry Angel bit too big at 6’s.
Brando worth an each way if they’ll allow you the 33/1.My 100% book:
Caravaggio 6/4, Harry Angel 5/1, Limato 5/1, Tasleet 7/1, The Tin Man 9/1, Brando 22/1, All the others 500/1.My bets:
Harry Angel @ 8/1 and 7/1 ante-post and 6/1 now.
Tasleet at 14/1 ante-post and 11.5/1 now.
saver on Brando 39/1.
Laid Caravaggio @ 1.12/1.Just seen my 33/1 ew on betfair was taken.
So with Caravaggio beaten, Harry Angel winning and Brando placing… Am well pleased.
Surprised Beggy didn’t go for home earlier on Intelligence Cross and force others to chase. Played in to the hands of those with 5f speed – Harry and Limato and to a certain extent Brando. Harry also having positional advantage in a race run in slow early fractions.
Value Is EverythingJuly 15, 2017 at 17:09 #1310239He settled much better today as well, the penny has dropped.
Delighted for Kirby and Cox, know how much faith they have in himGaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026

Wonder if Caravaggio goes up in trip ?

If they do it’ll be egg on face time, Botchy. Coolmore surely can’t admit the fastest they’ve ever had wants further than 6f in open company.
tbh At Ascot everything suited Caravaggio, his main rivals went a strong pace allowing him to come through looking impressive. ie Probably going clear because he was slowing down at a lesser rate than Harry and Blue Point. Harry better than distances suggested.
Today it was the opposite. Harry is a horse with speed. Kirby was allowed to go comparitively slow early. So Caravaggio was trying to make up ground two out at a time when Harry himself was quickening.
If you look at the other front runner – Intelligence Cross – on form it today is considerably ahead of his previous best (flattered). Caravaggio (from the back in a slowly run race) better than distances suggest.
It wouldn’t surprise me if Caravaggio finishes in front of Harry if there’s a stronger pace at Haydock. No need to race over further yet.
Value Is EverythingJuly 15, 2017 at 18:12 #1310249Very happy with that and took 4/1 on Harry Angel for glory at Haydock hour before race well done to other HARRY ANGEL backers to
July 15, 2017 at 19:34 #1310266Blatant non-trier. Will there be any fines?
No.
Who wasn’t trying?
Plenty of people thought Caravaggio was vulnerable today.
For “The fastest horse (45Mph) we have” Caravaggio hasn’t looked a pure speed merchant. His two five furlong races were his first two runs, one on all-weather and the other on softish ground. His Coventry win came on soft and his win on faster ground at odds of 1/8 was not that impressive visually. He then won an awful race on his comeback, and as I said before the race today, I felt he was in trouble last time.
For me, Caravaggio’s overall profile suggests a bit of cut helps him. He was simply outpaced today after a less than ideal start.
I had concerns about Harry Angel settling today but he ran out a dominant winner. He looks the horse for the future. Well done to those who backed him today.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Doesn’t that totally ignore Caravaggio’s best performance in the Commonwealth on good-firm, Steve?
Value Is EverythingJuly 15, 2017 at 20:03 #1310269I think Steve is saying about the Commonwealth was similar to you ginge in that his main rivals were cutting each others throats which set it up for him

The 6f race on good-firm is still Caravaggio’s best form Nathan, even if the others made it easier for him than it might have been.

It’s probably true that he is the fastest they have ever had, but sure wont hurt his stud fee winning a G1 over further also. Looks like being a great second half of the flat this year.
July 15, 2017 at 22:51 #1310287I’m not confident Caravaggio would want any further, he’s made late ground but is one of the 1st pulled up after the line looking at the head on replay

July 16, 2017 at 00:54 #1310294Just home from a great day out but had to come here and say…..
Well done Nathan and Ginge
Harry Angel was one of the most impressive winners of the July Cup I have seen and totally deserved win. Loving the new Avatar Nathan
Limato ran a brave race to take second place and my loyalties stayed with him having backed him last year.
Must say it’s one of the worst July Festivals in betting terms that I have ever had as I managed to back both the fancied Godolphin runners that lost today Afaak and Silken Dancer and Frontiersman on the first day.
Having said that I have enjoyed every single minute of it and count myself lucky having been there and seen top class horses.Highlight of the meeting for me was seeing Roly Poly secure her place as a top Brood Mare by winning the Falmouth Stakes after being the Bridesmaid on so many occassions.
Well done again to Ginger for spotlighting Brando as an each way pick. He always makes me smile when he walks past in the paddock as he is like Mike Tyson turning up at a high class tea party, he looked like he could have eaten them all for breakfast. Great to see him back to form after his broken blood vessel last time out at York.

July 16, 2017 at 16:24 #1310353Aidan is talking about dropping Caravaggio to 5F. That makes little sense to me, because the horse would have been beaten even further if the July Cup had been 5F. In the Commonwealth Cup Caravaggio was working hard in behind Harry Angel and Blue Point, and as they hit the furlong pole he was still behind the pair and needed that final furlong to reel them in.
In the July Cup Caravaggio earned this write up from the ATR team:-
“Unable to quicken when slightly hampered on near side over 1f out, kept on inside final furlong, went 4th towards finish, never going pace to threaten”
At the furlong pole he was well held and it takes him until the dying strides to catch his pacemaker and 100/1 shot Intelligence Cross to beat him a neck.
I still feel the Coventry was his most dominant performance and he’s never been a point and shoot trailblazer. He will remain vulnerable in my opinion to horses with true 5F speed.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
July 16, 2017 at 16:29 #1310355Just reading the French race could be next for Caravaggio over 6 and a half

July 16, 2017 at 20:31 #1310390Harry’s course seems pretty laid out and I’d imagine all roads lead to the Foret for Limato. Personally I’d love to see Henry Candy and Paul Jacobs ignore America this time and take Limato to Hong Kong in December.
I agree that the Maurice de Gheest is the best target for Caravaggio. I’m a very firm believer that you should always forgive a horse one bad run. Forget about Australia all together, it’s an impossible task and they’ll scupper the chance to win an all-aged European Group 1.
