Still a couple of months away, but a few firms starting to price up.

Saphir Du Rheu looks a very worthy favourite, and can’t really keep him out of the frame, a big season surely awaits. Be great to see Coneygree take his chance as well, but there’s plenty of others who make some appeal, namely the likes of The Druids Nephew, Ofaolains Boy, The Young Master, and Ned Stark.

Early doors obviously, but started chipping away at a couple…….

Puffin Billy – Finished last season on high, winning 3 on the bounce, and I could easily see him head here. 20’s seems fair enough.

Houblon Des Obeaux – Only 2 pounds higher than his creditable second in this last year, and I’d love to see Venetia give him another chance in it. 33’s looks huge from an each way stance, even at this early stage.

Great stuff Bob,I cant believe Saphir du rheu is only 6/1 though.I thought I had missed the 10/1 but there never was any.He is my Gold cup horse this year.TAPK’s fav price of 40/1 has been taken and if he’s the horse I think he is he has to win the Hennessey.I wont be looking for anything to beat him.I can feel a ’10 to follow’ coming. :yahoo:

Which Muppet at the Jockey Club came up with the idea of the million pound bonus, thereby at a stroke dicking up one of the great handicaps.

Oh and while I’m on the subject, how does Paddy effing Power think that 33/1 for Coneygree is a decent price for something which comprises events that they have him priced up at 5/2, 4/1 and 8/1?

Much as I respect you good judges, Saphir Du Rheu will not be winning the 2016 Gold Cup. The winner will be Irish – take your pick:

    VAUTOUR
    DON POLI
    DON COSSACK
    DJAKADAM

Having had 25s each of the first 2 mentioned, I’m hoping it’s one of those :)

O’Faolain’s Boy certainly has some appeal. Rebecca Curtis posted a picture of him a few weeks ago looking rock hard fit already – he’s done some serious work this summer, you can tell!

I know he’s not quoted, but I’d also keep the faith with Sausalito Sunrise if he gets an entry. His Chepstow run was bizarre, but it would be a vote of confidence if he does get an entry.

It’s unlikely Thomas Crapper will wash up here, but connections might get tempted if he goes close or wins the Paddy Power. He storms up the hill so well at Cheltenham that I’ve always fancied him to get three miles and beyond.

I can’t wait to see the weights for this race. Just how much will Coneygree have to give away to his rivals.

If ever a horse could do a Denman and gallop his rivals into submission while giving lumps of weight away it has to be the Gold Cup champ.

TAPK the worlds finest judge of Wine, Women,Strictly come Dancing and Horses saw this years Hennessey winner float round Carlisle this afternoon, the last of the 6/1 has been taken today.I do love a bit of banter and Sara Bradstocks bullish comments about how ‘Coneygree’ will beat my Grey Warship certainly make for good reading.I can see their horse humping top weight and giving mine a nice 9lb…11-3 would be nice. B-)

Clould not disagree there TAPK however if he sends it over I think Vroum Vroum Mag will win. I think this is a machine and will follow her until beat.

She is the one horse I dont want to see coming over Sir…She’ll get 10lb off ‘Saphir’ if she does turn up and that puts her in with around 10-7,a very lenient mark for one so progressive. They did fail miserably with ‘Djakadam’ last year though.

I seem to recall Patrick Mullins on the Racing Post Postcast that most of his father’s horses are still pretty fat… also that Vroom Vroum Mag might be one of the best handicapped horses in training.

It would be a bold move to run the very promising mare left-handed for the first time since her French days, and in a big field in arguably the toughest Chasing H’cap outside the National. All but one Chase victory has been in single figure fields

Easiest race of the season to work out so far if Coneygree gets his conditions…don’t see any logical reason to take him on…you can even take the price now and be safe in the knowledge you’ll nick a few points come post time….

At the same, or similar price…why anyone would want to put their faith and money behind Saphir De Rheu is bizarre? Why would you want to take on a Gold Cup winner who will relish this test just for the sake of receiving 9 lbs? He’s failed to complete both previous times he’s taken on Coneygree and is 0/3 at the course….when his jumping is put to the test in a stamina sapping contest like this will it hold up? No, not for me…

Another Mullins ‘thrown in’ chaser….hmmmmm…no thanks…

Is this a test that suits the Irish brigade at this time of year? Me thinks not looking at recent history…

Since the disqualified drugs cheat winner Mullins sent over in 2002 he’s sent 7 over and their collective efforts brought a 4th, 8th, 8th, 9th, 13th, F and PU….add to that another 20 Irish raiders in that time that have managed one 3rd place and the rest out with the washing….6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 11th(x2), 12th(x2), 13th, 15th, F, UR(x2), PU(x6)…

    Coneygree to win…..easy….

I think you’re probably right in dismissing the Irish challenge, it looks light. To be fair it’s not a race the Irish trainers usually target. Last year Djakadam was all the rage but disappointed, Mullins was eventually proven right about the horse (26 lbs right to be exact) but he just doesn’t have his horses ready for this sort of test this early in the season and last year proved you can’t win this half cooked no matter how much you have in hand.

Noel Meade looked to hold a great chance with Pandorama a few years back but he nearly met his maker at the first and was promptly pulled up. I always look for a potential Gold Cup horse in this and the Irish horses that fit the profile are usually aimed at Down Royal or the John Durkan. The likes of Don Poli, Wounded Warrior, Vroum Vroum Mag and Mullaghanoe River are all well handicapped but I’d be surprised if any of them make the trip – the Mullins will hardly be ready while Wounded Warrior did’t get an entry and Mullaghanoe River going for the Troytown.

I haven’t looked at the possible contenders too closely but at first glance 7/1 Coneygree appeals more so than 5/1 Saphir Du Rheu. If In Doubt could be a big price at 25/1.

Nice run back there from the Hennessy winner…only surprising thing to me is he’s still longer odds than SDR….

I have to say, I was mightily impressed by Coneygree today. Jumped for fun and stays all day.
It looks like it will be a cracking race this year.
I am susprised that Mullins as not been giving some of his a run if he intends on coming over as he get turned over last year and the way his horses are running this year when they seem in need of a run there may well be value with Coneygree because you knwo he will jump out and run and jump all day.
this could be the race of the season.

I can easily see Conneygree going off around the 3/1 mark for this race, it may have been a fairly shallow race today but he was imo very impressive.
