Apologies Triptych, I should be referring to you as M’lady and not fella.
CJ80, that is one heck of a time. Still can’t believe DA ran and won the first 2yo race in Ireland and then ended up winning the Guineas.
I really can’t see the others catching him up.
May 5, 2013 at 09:34 #438691Hi Jacqui,
It seems every year that the cloud comes over just as I’m about to photograph them down at the start. They also loaded them pretty quickly too so chances of a picture were slim even if the light had been good.
…never mind. I might head up this afternoon again and see if I can get a few snaps of Sir Henry’s classic hope. Sun is shining full tilt again now with a cornflower blue sky. Blinking typical!
Here’s a heavy crop of about the only shot I got of him in profile.

Might have been okay if it had been nicely lit but c’est la vie I guess.

May 5, 2013 at 09:59 #438695Just finished my last few crumbs of humble pie
The winner is clearly a very smart horse. Looks to me as though he’s capable of staying the Derby.
Toronado looked cooked two furlongs out. I’m not writing off Toronado just
yet
… although it is hard to see him turning the tables on Dawn Approach.
Glory Awaits was the fly in the ointment and somewhat perforates the form of the race.
May 5, 2013 at 10:18 #438697Toronado was a fantastic pace maker, wasn’t he?
May 5, 2013 at 10:19 #438698Sitting duck more like
May 5, 2013 at 10:33 #438699Looked the part though…

May 5, 2013 at 10:59 #438706Cheers for the photo Hammy
For me, Toronado went into the 2000 Guineas with the same kind of expectations/hype that Cacoethes carried in the 1989 Derby … the horse considered the one to beat Nashwan. As we know, Nashwan swept aside Cacoethes but one always felt that the latter was better than his tame performance indicated. When the two opposed each other again in the King George, Cacoethes showed his true form despite losing … but got considerably closer to his arch rival. I suspect that Toronado is a bit like Cacoethes in that respect.
May 5, 2013 at 12:19 #438727Dawn Approach "probably" won’t win the Derby. But as he’s 5/2 and not odds-on, I’d say he stands a better than 29% chance of winning. Around a fair 7/4 to 13/8 (36 to 38%) shot I’d say at this stage.
Take the 5/2.
Probably will, settles sweetly, travels well and never looked like stopping.could well go offclose to odds on.
I agree with you SE, come the day Dawn Approach will start nearer odds-on than 5/2. The 5/2 has already gone and don’t expect 2/1 to last the week. Anything thought a fair "36 to 38%" chance now is likely to have a fair 42 to 44% chance by off time. When a bookmakers mark up is added to that figure it’s around 6/5. Although if we get more than the average quality field it could be a bit bigger, worse than average field and Dawn Approach could start odds-on.
Value Is EverythingMay 5, 2013 at 13:34 #438736Well Done to all who backed dawn approach, won easily in the end.. interesting to know people’s thoughts on the winning time? could be some horse..
Camelot 1m. 42.46s
the mighty Frankel 1m 37.30s
Dawn Approach 1m 35.84s
Camelot’s ground was totaly different, although it was a below average Guineas winning performance anyway.
Difference between two days a couple of years apart can be considerable even if Frankel and Dawn Approach raced on officially "good-firm" ground. It’s much more acurate to judge times in relation to others on the day CJ80. Sole Power only 0.21 away from the course record.
The biggest problem about comparing times between days is wind speed and direction. Dawn Approach had a wind more or less behind him, Frankel had a head wind to contend with. Even on the day winds can drop or increase or change direction between races. However, the easiest way for a basic comparison between Frankel’s time with Dawn Approach is to look at how all Racing Post standard times compare
on the day
. Of course if just one race was truly run it might be a bad exercise, but you can usually spot truly and slowly run races.
The three best time performances yesterday were:
1m Group 1 Dawn Approach 3yo carrying 9-0 Slow by 0.54 sec.
5f Group 3 a 6yo carrying 9-0Fast
by 0.48 sec.
6f Class 2 handicap 3yo carrying 8-11 Slow by 0.7 sec.Three best times two years ago were in the same races:
1m Group 1 Frankel 3yo carrying 9-0 Slow by 2.00 sec.
5f Group 3 a 6yo carrying 9-0 Slow by 2.2 sec.
6f Class 2 handicap 3yo carrying 8-6 Slow by 2.74 sec.Value Is EverythingMay 5, 2013 at 21:06 #438805Oh sweet vindication.

Brilliant picture Hammy, the rain had just stopped by the start of the race and we managed to get a great view from the top Grandstand can’t believe he’s now favourite for the Derby, of course I’d love him to win but that is a bigger ask although he seems so laid back maybe he could get the distance but I wouldn’t be as confident as I was for the 2000 Guineas.
Hope you got some shots of Sky Lantern today Hammy, what a ride by Hughsie his timing was spot on Jac
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...May 7, 2013 at 17:44 #438955I didn’t get any shots whatsoever of the 1,000 Guineas Jacqui. The day before, on 2,000 day, there were a couple of families sitting down by the mile start with their kids and a rather loud dog. The kids were running all over the place with their parents making no effort at all to control them. I remember thinking ‘this will end in tears’. On the Sunday we were all banned from the nearside barriered area effectively ending any opportunity to take some pictures. Apparently one of the little kids had been doing somersaults right under the rail and spooked a horse.
End of an era for me I’m afraid.

Hammy I’m so sorry to hear that, it would have been more appropriate to have banned small children and animals from the barriered area rather than those who wished to take photos or get close to the horses before the start…hope you had a little on Sky Lantern.
Here is a shot I took of her on my Samsung Gallaxy 2 phone nothing like your proffesional shots Hammy, but I was quite pleased with it. She was just being cooled down after winning the Guineas in the area adjacent to the pre-parade ring…
Apart from the weather on Saturday and the lack of shots, hope you enjoyed the two days, Dawn Approach did the business (well done with your 12/1) and Sky Lantern was the icing on the cake…Jac[attachment=0:1hrjq4z9]2013-05-05 16.09.49.jpg[/attachment:1hrjq4z9]
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...May 11, 2013 at 16:03 #439339On the Oaks front, in a very open looking year, my eye was drawn to Secret Gesture trained by Ralph Beckett. A January foal by Galileo, she should improve this year and have an age edge at what is a relatively early stage of the season. At 25/1 she is my sporting selection for a stable who has won the race before.
Remember, you heard it here first LOL
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
May 15, 2013 at 18:46 #439688Really enjoyed your description of the day Dawn Approach won the Guineas.Your happiness was so fulsome and infectious that I felt the simple joy of it all after many ,many years of crusting. Thanks for your innocence.Brought back my childhood.
