I’ve been told to nab some of the 33/1 about John Gosden’s Ghurair for the 2013 2,000 Guineas.
Apparently this horse is going to be something special.
I’m always a bit cautious about backing two year olds for the following season, preferring to see how they come through the winter, but I also usually miss the big prices.
Thought I’d just pass the information on.
August 1, 2012 at 14:20 #408560I honestly don’t know what to make of that. The horse simply didn’t race. I was praying for an unbeaten record to take into his three year old career but in this instance I’m not completely forlorn. He couldn’t have run much greener.
Probably done my cash but I won’t tear up the slips just yet.
August 1, 2012 at 15:15 #408571A disappointing race I thought. You could have thrown a Hobbit’s duvet over the first five home. Ghurair wandered this way and that but stayed on a little towards the end of the race. He doesn’t really look like he has the pace to be a contender in the Guineas on this evidence. Still a promising sort with improvement to come but the notion that he has freakish ability was clearly filed in the "Fantasy Island" folder today.
Olympic Glory is now as low as 14/1 with some for the Guineas now. That makes no appeal whatever after today’s race.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Nicely summed up Steve. I think he will improve and if even an element of the hype proves correct he’ll probably make up,into a decent animal. However the next Frankel he clearly aint.
August 20, 2012 at 10:25 #410242Any opinion about Galileo Rock?
August 20, 2012 at 10:56 #410244Loved reading that story and it had me laughing out loud too!!
He sounds like one of my old Sgt Majors from years gone back
October 6, 2012 at 13:31 #415455I see Ghurair runs today. The soft ground he had for his debut might help but the form of his run behind Olympic Glory has not worked out, with 10 unplaced and 2 placed from the 12 runs since. Has a bit to prove today and I would watch rather than play.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
October 6, 2012 at 16:29 #415512Gosden seems to think he will make a Guineas colt. Also likes his fillie’s chance in the Arc.
October 6, 2012 at 17:45 #415528I phoned up for a bet on him based on the 7/1 sp forecast in the paper and cancelled the bet when I was told he was 9/4. I couldn’t let it rest in the end though and rang back to have him and Mince in a double instead.
Now I’m quite a bit in front I may well tuck into Camelot in tomorrow’s Arc.
Ghurair looks as though he could be anything or nothing. He looked reluctant to race to me and yet again appeared to lose concentration as he hit the final furlong and the noise from the stands. He still looks as green as grass but at one point in the race he simply flew for literally two strides and the acceleration looked awesome. It was only a brief fleeting moment of natural effort and then the jockey had to get serious with him to get a race out of him. I think he might yet grow into a very decent colt and am a bit more hopeful for my investment than after his last race. I see he’s been cut to 16’s for the Guineas so my 33/1 is looking fair value I think.
Curiously, despite the form of his maiden win, I don’t think he enjoyed the ground one bit today and he looks to me like he’s desperately in need of another furlong

He’s crying out for a mile, perhaps he will come on a ton through the winter but I think he will need to make a lot of progress. John Gosden has had 20 odd years to make his mark in the 2000 Guineas without success and his Derby and Oaks records are modest with only Benny The Dip to show for his efforts in those classics. Considering the owners he is training for you might well have expected more success. It is not hard to imagine the scenario where, yet again, the race will come too soon, weather has been wrong, had a setback and missed a couple of days, will be trotted out before declaring that he will make his seasonal debut in the Dante. Then the going will be too fast and/or the track will be all against him at Epsom and he will run at Royal Ascot instead. Still, there’s always the Leger

October 6, 2012 at 19:14 #415546Oh well there’s my money gone then.
Mind you he did have the first and fourth in the 1,000 Guineas this year, so I suppose he’s starting to get the hang of training horses for the spring at last…
October 9, 2012 at 14:49 #415913I thought that O’Brien won the first four classics this year.

Not sure who or what you are aiming at Andy but I was talking about John Gosden.

October 9, 2012 at 15:21 #415918Does anyone think Mark Johnston’s Steeler has a squeak? He was 33/1 when I last looked. I know that he might be termed more of a Derby type but I like the way he is progressing and his battling nature. Mister Baileys was supposed to be a Derby Horse too and he won the Guineas for the team. In addition, horses like Sea The Stars and Camelot were more Derby types but managed to do the business. I think he looks a better prospect than some of the ones ahead of him in the betting and for a bit of fun 33/1 could be OK.

October 9, 2012 at 15:32 #415919While 33/1 Steeler would be a respectable quote in normal circumstances, it is unlikely that he will be trained at Middleham next year. Shamardal in 2005 won the Poulains and Jockey-Club after being transferred to Godolphin. The litany of unsuccessful transfers doesn’t make 33/1 for the 2000 Guineas sound that tempting.
October 9, 2012 at 17:24 #415936Hammy said and I quote "Mind you he did have the first and fourth in the 1,000 Guineas this year,".I thought he too was referring to Gosden, since we were talking about Gosden’s chances in the Guineas.Apologies for the misunderstanding.
October 9, 2012 at 17:44 #415940Oops sorry Andy, my mistake, I meant to write ‘2nd’ and ‘4th’.
Surprised it wasn’t picked up earlier. Just goes to show that noboy reads my posts anyway.
