I think Rip Van Winkle ran a good race. It is now evident that he is not suited Newmarket’s rowley mile.
I think they should run him in the Irish 2,000 Guineas.

I would agree with that. He didn’t look like a Derby horse to me despite runing on well. I would imagine the Irish 2000 would not be quite as hot as today’s race and he might just be good enough.
As far as Matercraftsman is concerned I doubt if he will drop in distance. He looked to lack that bit of toe even as a 2 year old and what he needs is a drop in class not a drop in distance.
May 2, 2009 at 20:29 #225134RVW lacks the toe for 1 mile as did New Approach before him. Only on good ground could RVW have anychance of bridging the gap to STS, so depends on what comes up in ireland. However I think they should send him for the derby and then drop him back if he doesnt see out the trip (much like Oratorio who if memory serves me was also fourth in the Newmarket guineas).
May 2, 2009 at 20:51 #225138What a suprise, once again gutless Blue Square go 5/2 for Sea The Stars to win the Derby
Same as Ladbrokes. Are they gutless?
Black Type, do you work for Blue Sq by any chance?
Lads shortened him to 5/2 since this morning. Corals put him up at 5/1
First BSq put Patkai at 2/1, now STS at 5/2, THAT is why I’m calling them gutless. They over react when others keep horses a full 2.5points further out
May 2, 2009 at 20:52 #225140I’ve just been looking back through the thread.
I think the first mention of Sea The Stars was by Andyod, Page 14, April 10th.
On another matter.
Now, on form, Sea The Stars links in with Mourayad, who links in with Fame And Glory . . .

Careful with that link Gerald
Mourayan ran no kind of race last time out
Watch him go in the Derrinstown

The problem I would have with Mourayan is will he go on fast ground. He was certainly no match for Flame and Glory on soft. Mind you I have no idea whether Flame and Glory will goon fast ground either as he has never done so.
He was fav that day but beaten and I would fully expect AOB’s to improve past him.
Another huge negative is that the stable obviously don’t fancy him too much. There has been very little market activety for him whereas STS has been niggle at more than a bit before winning today.
It is hard to imagine him being fist choice over STS
Well done Equi for backing the winner. I looked back myself and noticed someone convinced you it wouldn’t. I bet he’s in hiding now
May 2, 2009 at 21:22 #225153Probably a good job I’m not a layer too, Fist
I said a couple of days ago STS would be the one horse I’d lay for the Guineas! Haha
May 2, 2009 at 21:30 #225155I agree with Fist pretty poor Guineas I think. I don’t have the winner rated much higher than 117. May be better over further but I’d hope a Derby winner would be a better horse than Sea The Stars. Delegator just not good enough. Rip Van Winkle I’ve changed my mind about I think he wants further he definitely got caught flat footed then ran on, had to switch and is possibly value for an extra pound or two.
Hard to get too excited by this Guineas at the moment.
May 2, 2009 at 21:30 #225156Did Delegator just not quite get home? Ever so slightly? Very good run all the same, but maybe will be stronger still over a slightly easier mile. Would really have to worry about style of running in the sussex though
Really like the winner. Very very nice horse and any gunieas winner that is likely to be seen to better effect over further is more than likely to be a very good animal
Some good analysis through this thread
May 2, 2009 at 21:48 #225162Help: Can any one tell me about the distances in American races. I was looking back at Raven Pass win in the Breeders’ Cup Classic and it say he won by 29 and 12 back to the 3rd.
28 and 12 what?
Fist, I closed down Firefox, opened Internet Explorer, entered attheraces, was just about to play the video, when I realised those were the American odds (Henrythenavigator being coupled with Duke Of Marmalade).

Deklegator got home OK Clive, Sea The Stars just moved better on the ground IMO and was able to find an extra gear on it, above what delegator could. It is very much worth watching the race back (they have the replays on the Racing UK website for free), watch the actions of Mastercraftsman, Delegator and Sea The Stars. STS lengthens better on the ground than the other two at the end, and that is very much what has won the day.
Hopefully he’s just as effective on good. One thing’s for sure though, I bet they’ll be queuing out the door when he goes to stud, when you look at how well galileo has done without being quite able to get a guineas winner, this one may look like he could be the galileo of future guineas contenders. I wouldnt be surprised if a crazy price is paid for him in the next few weeks by either coolmore or sheikh mo for stud rights.
Well done also to cape cross, would I be right in saying that this is Cape Cross’s first classic winner since Ouija Board?

I cheated, and looked on the RP website.
Cape Cross has had 6 previous G1 winners, Ouija Board and 5 Kiwis.
They don’t have the years.
Over to you Myles.
Gerald
I’m now off to pick up my keys and sleep for the first night in Ashford. I’ll draw the curtains, in case Getzippy is peeping.
May 2, 2009 at 23:08 #225177Like they said about Dunguib. This one is not for sale.Back to Japan after racing!

Yes, but at the hideous risk of touting my own prescience, I mentioned Sea the Stars on another thread (What 5 horses are you most looking forward to seeing?) on 22 March. However, this good guesswork is radically undermined by two factors: I mentioned more than the requested five horses, and reckoned Sea the Stars to be my Derby, not Guineas, candidate.
I just wish I had put STS in all three, rather than just two, of my TTF lists! (Rip in all three BTW – will there be any joy in this – hope so!)

Well I mentioned him in page 1 of this thread back in November!
OK the post was about Arazan but he did get a mention!Seriously though, thought it was a soild performance by a horse who’ll surely come into his own over ten furlongs and possibly further. It might have been an ordinary enough renewal but I’d say the winner is quite smart. Great for John Oxx to finally have a few good ones again. He’s had a number of quiet years now so its great to see him back on the map. One of the best trainers in the business and a sound man to boot.
May 3, 2009 at 01:35 #225225You win, IC!
Agree with you about both John Oxx and STS – may they have a very successful season!
