August 5, 2023 at 06:59 #1658523Would you by any chance have video of the 1970 Colonial Cup? That would be my holy grail but I’m not sure it exists. One of the best fields ever assembled, certainly the best in an American steeplechase.
August 5, 2023 at 12:05 #1658603I watched it on YouTube(I subscribe to your channel)while I had my breakfast. Thanks for uploading it.
I didn’t realise that Sea Pigeon ever tackled fences. Although you would hardly know it from the tv coverage. Always drives me nuts when you only get to see the leaders going over jumps.
August 6, 2023 at 04:04 #1658852It’s great some of these you tube channels that have these old races loaded up , end up having late nights just watching the new uploads , really good stuff . Even seeing the old presenters it just takes me right back .
I saw Grand Canyon race at Sandown in 1984 I think it would have been , he was an old horse then , in one of the military races . He was a NZ bred and won either Colonial Cup or Maryland Hunt Cup . I think he raced all other the place after leaving NZ .
Iam sure he raced at same meeting Davy Jones had a ride , still got the old racebook will have to dig it out one dayAugust 6, 2023 at 04:54 #1658853“I didn’t realise that Sea Pigeon ever tackled fences. Glad to see the quality of the camerawork at American hunt meets hasn’t changed lol.Grand Canyon (known as Grand Canyon II in the USA) won the Colonial Cup twice. Didn’t realize he raced all the way till 1984.
It’s a shame they stopped running the Colonial Cup, was always a tremendous race and a nice end to the season.
August 6, 2023 at 08:05 #1658860Thanks Miss Woodford , i remember going to Sandown with my Dad and he was looking forward to seeing Grand Canyon . Iam pretty sure his run in maybe the 81 or 82 King George is on you tube , bit of a front runner I recall.
Ive found the racebook , 1984 Imperial Cup day 10th March 84 , The Dick McCreery Cup , ,14 years old trained at time by trainer called Rex Carter at Swaffham . Write up states wins in UK , US , France , course record holder Ascot and Sandown . Also mentions had been based at Household Cavalry Barracks London .David Nicholson trained the winner of race , Fury Boy .
As for Davy Jones , he was not on same card he rode horse called Gilded Chief into second on 2 nd Nov 84 at Sandown . My 84 memories are merging a bit .
Looking though old racebooks another time waster for me so i will need to put them back in garage quicklyAugust 6, 2023 at 08:25 #1658864I love these old clips which can be blast-from-the-past material or give me visual insight into events before my time.
Many thanks for this and to all who upload such material to the great free resource that is YouTube.

August 21, 2023 at 21:58 #1660381A wonderful field in that 1970 race, Miss Woodford – thanks for posting. The $63,000 to the winner would today represent $495,973.00
I don’t know how to post screenshots here, so the link to the race preview in The New York Times is here:

Sorry I don’t have footage of that race and have never seen any but what an amazing line up. I think like yourself any footage has long since vanished. If only TV and racing broadcasters looked after jumps footage the way they do flat we would all be happier.
