I take the opposite view.
I thought Rainbow View looked beaten a fair bit out and was disappointing. The expected turn of foot was lacking and she was comprehensively put in her place by more physically robust looking fillies. How much improvement is left is anyone’s guess.
The winner, however, looks a particularly impressive looking individual.
Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
May 3, 2009 at 20:13 #225371Actually on a Giants Causeway note, I would hope to see Dreamtheimpossible out again soon. When Rainbow View beat her last year DTI looked very weak as a 2yo and looked to have some improvement about her going from 2-3, and as far as I know her target has always been the Irish 1,000. Hopefully she is fit and well.
Ref Rainbow View, I suspect we may have seen the best of her, IMO she was just very far ahead of the opposition last season, and has been passed by a few. They showed footage of her today taken after the fillies mile being washed down and she looked like a fully matured horse back then.
I dont think Fantasia would have beaten the winner today (but probably could have been placed). Also, I dont think Ghanaati has so much "franked" the form of some horse from last year, because she has clearly improved 2-3, and the other horse hasnt necessarily improved.

Can I get some time to study the race a bit more before ya bite my head off

To be perfectly frank I couldn’t care less if she was 1/16 for the race I am just looking at her in the same way as I would any horse.
In a way she reminds me of Raven’s Pass who most people on here gave up on. I thouhght he was a good thing for the Guineas and although he was beaten I thought he was too far ahead of himself and not as realxed as he was as a 2 yo but I also thought with time his class would show through.
It was ages before he started to show improvement but he did and if the Breeders Cup post is still up you will see I was the first person to put him up and say he would win it.
Mill Reef was beaten in the guineas you know? and boy they were disappointed and look how he turned out.
There is no substitute for class and take my word for it she has a lot more than I gave her credit for. Write her off at your peril IMO
May 3, 2009 at 20:51 #225380and she’ll be a better price now!

I bet Strawbridge is regretting not running Fantasia now, though it doesn’t surprise me that an American went for hype over proven well-being.
Well done to those who backed the winner.
Who knows Equi?, perhaps he’s taken the opposite view that id RV couldn’t win then she wouldn’t have.
These early races often produce form that looks great but turns out to be very ordinary. At least Fantasia still has a chance in France. If she had run today chances are she would have been stuffed as the winner looks a very useful horse.

Fists, I put Ravens Pass and Henry up for the Breeders Cup after the sussex stakes.
May 3, 2009 at 21:07 #225388To follow up Fist’s line this is Gosden quoted in today’s Racing Post:
"She’s in good order. She’s been working well. She has grown and lengthened and had a good winter.
It’s the first race of the year. It’s an important race but we must beware it is the first race of the year for her and obviously we are looking down the line as well. I’m pleased with her and we’ll see where we go . . .
….
I like horses like Ghanaati, although she is coming off a maiden having not run this year. Fillies like that can improve a lot and she was impressive in winning a decent maiden last year.
. . . She (RV) hasn’t run this year and hasn’t run for seven months. I didn’t run in a trial because I didn’t want to start her sooner than I had to.
You have races like the Breeders Cup. It’s in November this year and if you are of that class you try to keep that in the back of your mind. It’s a long season"
So, Gosden was not only subtly trying to tell us not to back RV today, but later in the season – he also tipped us the winner!May 3, 2009 at 21:29 #225399SS still looked bloody green to me, thats how much improvement i’m expecting her to make between now and June.
From the RP website:
Meehan was another trainer in the Classic frame again after Delegator’s second in the colt’s version.
He said: "I think if we had got rain this weekend I might have won two Guineas. She would prefer more cut in the ground but she ran a good race in her trial and has worked very well since.
"I think she will go for an Oaks now and my first thought is the Prix Diane."
Okay, the top bit was about Super Sleuth.
Now back to Rainbow View:
Gosden said: "She was in good form, she’d worked well. I didn’t have any concerns about the filly training on. She’d certainly trained on according to her work.
"She hated the ground. It’s nobody’s fault. We’ve had an incredibly dry spring here. It was just good to firm yesterday. They were due to get rain last night, didn’t get it and I’m afraid Jimmy (Fortune) said after three and a half to four furlongs she was in trouble.
"She was hopping off the ground and changing her legs. Her action got higher and higher and he knew she was loathing it.
"The last little bit uphill she ran on a bit, but it was more a question of her just finishing on her class – she was not liking the ground.
"We will look at races like the Irish Guineas and Epsom (Oaks) when we get good ground for her and you’ll see right back to her best."

As I said she looks a very different filly and with a bit of time she should strengthen up and will be in a better condition to carry herself.
I for one will be keeping on the right side of her.
Breeders Cup? Well you can’t say he’s not ambitous
May 3, 2009 at 23:46 #225443Ok so I said she wouldn’t win but I want to be honest. That’s the best performance I have seen from Rainbow View and I think she has improved.
There was nothing of her last year hence my dilike for her. When I watched the race again I was very impressed and thought she ran a cracker in defeat. She actualy looked a more complete horse today and she will improve even further.
Give her time and anyone who backed her forget today and keep backing her. I think you will be well rewarded.
Absolutely agree Fist, she will be better on good ground, and keeping the faith should be done, her defeat was not that bad on unfavourable ground and seemed to pick up again when she hit the rising ground.
Getting with in 3L to the winner and her time was much faster than when betting Fantasia in the Group 1 Meon Valley Stud Fillies’ Mile at Ascot infact she has shaded 3 seconds off her time from that race so she is definetly getting quicker
TrendsMan, how can you compare those two times?
Ascot is run on a bend, Newmarket is a mile straight
I do apologise i did not account for Ascot going around the bend..i stand corrected and the times can not be comparable
May 4, 2009 at 06:04 #225503I’m very impressed.
For such an apparently green filly, she is very polished. Fluent stride, nice and composed – seemed in a world of her own. When asked for more, she lengthened and toughened it out at the dip.
Can you ask for any more?
Heart Shaped is one to follow – very awkward with the head leaning to the side and bouncing about on her forelegs. Still boasted the raw class to manage a close-up finish, and is in the firing line for a Group 1 this season.
Finally, after both performances I’m very confident Arazan can topple Sea The Stars at The Curragh if they meet. An abundance of talented 3YOs and Bolger’s form yard cannot be ignored from hereonin.

The sectionals for this race would be interesting, as to my eyes Rainbow View raced like a horse that was inconvenienced more by the distance than the ground. She travelled well early, was outpaced mid-race when the taps were turned on, and then finished well when it was all too late, which is not exactly what you’d expect from a horse that didn’t act on the ground.
Easy to say after the race too, but her 2yo profile isn’t exactly that of a filly that would be best at a mile as an older horse either. Be interesting to see what JG does with her, should the Oaks be run on fast ground, but certainly too early to write her off as the top class animal her previous form showed her to be.?May 4, 2009 at 13:05 #225535

You couldn’t help but notice Heart Shaped but I’d be careful Myles. She was hanging or at least throwing here head about very very badly for some reason. I would like to see her run again before comitting myself to a bet.

"I have to be honest with you, if she wasn’t the odds-on favourite I probably wouldn’t have run her."
Kind of him to tell the betting public after the race.

Told us we just didn’t tell you

If he had and she had won what then? Trainers are in a no win situation sometimes and the best thing to do is to say as little as possible. Probably why AOB seldom says anything concrete.
May 4, 2009 at 15:27 #225565It looked plain obvious to me that Rainbow View didn’t really act on the ground. I think she did well to finish as close as she did in the end (the same case could be made for Delegator I think). Her striding action looked to be crying out for softish ground that she could get her hooves into to accelerate.
I’m taking nothing away from the Ghanaati though. She was a worthy winner. To be honest, I completely overlooked her because I was so adamant that Rainbow View was going to win

Then maybe you could explain why she finished better than almosy every other runner – on ground she didn’t act on?
