Thanks both. You need to pay for the info I’m after at the Company Check sites, and sadly the link doesn’t work Homer, but you’ve given me a good start point.
So for 2014 RUK had £100k to redistribute back to racing. That’s 0.22% of turnover, and 8% of the Director’s remuneration. In effect the equivalent of sponsoring half a dozen moderately decent handicaps. None of which makes me think that their advert should be taken with anything other than a huge pinch of salt. One thing I have noticed about Sun ratings, although this is an impression rather than anything researched, they do seem to be quite literal and slow to react. Recent form, and latent potential are often not reflected in the rating, whereas past exceptional performances seem to stay built in regardless.
So for instance on Friday you’ll get winning favourite Poets Word rated 14th of 16 in the 530 Goodwood, whilst in the 345 you get Goldream 3 and 5 points clear in the ratings.
A big problem is that they do not seem to handle foreign racing so the 455 winner Al Jazi was unrated.
Comparing to the Mail, they agreed on 3 top rated horses yesterday at Goodwood with one winner, Franklin D, but it would seem that almost everyone knew about that one!Couldn’t disagree with any of Gingertipster’s considerations. I’ve always tried to take into account how trainers horses have run compared to how they should have run, using the market as a guide, much along the lines described above. I also look at trainers form over the last week/fortnight/month ensuring I take account of Wins and Placed runs. Anyone with a win and place strike rate over 50% will grab my attention.
Can’t claim I’m overly rigorous with all this but I definitely try to take trainer form into account when looking at a race even if only to narrow big race fields down to size.
RUK make much of the fact that you can view on other platforms for no extra charge. So I suspect they will manage volume days by having prime meetings live on TV, lesser ones live on PC/Mobile, and wrap them all up together on replay TV or on request on PC/Mobile. Fine if you’ve got PC/Mobile available and a broadband speed faster than a snail.
On the subject of “all our profits go back into Racing” I’ve asked the question directly a number of times but no meaningful replies.
Doncaster stewards found Atzeni guilty of careless riding, not dangerous riding. Lee Mottershead in today’s RPost makes the point that had they found it to be dangerous then the horse would have been disqualified, which I didn’t realise myself.

Got plenty more details such as weight carried, Winner and placed horses, going etc if you want anything further. Certainly a very hardy and progressive individualMy question would be why Corals and others have this differentiation between office and online customers. They constantly tell us office money is dying, online is the future. If this is designed to encourage online betting why hide it? It can only be to disadvantage the office punter, who they will lose as in this case rather than move them online.
September 21, 2015 at 11:24 in reply to: Oldtimers help needed to identify a few jockeys from 1980’s please #1207785John Burke rode Reckless Philip throughout 81/82 season when he ran 6 times, winning on his last two starts at Huntingdon and Uttoxeter. He ran twice at Nottingham that season. 20/2/82 a Saturday, he ran third, and was unplaced on 7/12/81.
The horse then ran 12 times during 82/83,three times at Nottingham. He finished second under Graham Bradley, Fell when ridden by John Francome, and then third under our friend John Burke, on 22/3/83.So if that’s Reckless Philip, at Nottingham in 1982 then it’s John Burke! And even if it’s 83 it’s sure as heck neither Francome nor Bradley

March 25, 2015 at 10:00 in reply to: C4's Grand National ad – even more rubbish than last year's! #867107Not to mention the fact that the ‘new born’ at the start has the face of a calf not a foal. Love to see David Redvers face if the offspring of Makfi had a face like that!
I recorded the last half dozen BC races from ATR, and watched them early this morning.
I know little about UK/US flat racing, but I watched it, was engaged by it and thoroughly enjoyed the NBC coverage.
For a broadcast seeking to engage the general TV viewer it seemed infinitely superior to anything the UK offers. I did have a little think about why I should feel that way because it was undoubtedly schmaltzy. For me I think it paid far less attention to the betting, and more attention to the horse story, albeit often through the people involved.
Didn’t think I’d enjoy it, but did.
The vagaries of Going reports were brought home to me again today when reading that the ground at York prior to next week is currently Good, based on a current stick reading of 6.5.
My bets today were based on official going reports at Newmarket Newbury and Chester being all Soft with stick readings at 6.1, 6.3, and 7.0, whilst Ripon was Good, G-S in places at 7.9.
Imagine my confusion!
Shergar, Nijinsky and Roberto. I don’t know why, but it could be my age. I said it could be my age…….
In with a bang, and rarely out of the spotlight, out with a whimper, barely heard a squeak for months.
Presumably there is greener grass elsewhere?
