Although I rarely venture far from the “Systems” board I am reaching out for a wider opinion by posting here in the hope someone can offer an opinion regarding the ratings produced along the race cards within the paper.
I have not read much with regard to the SUN ratings but have noticed them being able to spot the occasional unfancied winner. They do not appear to always highlight the most obvious such as those fancied by the paper tipsters or betting forecast suggesting a very different angle.
I wonder if any here can suggest how or what is the main ingredient regarding the make up of the rating.

I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysJuly 27, 2016 at 12:58 #1257780Yes we all get the unfancied winner every now and again. I do get the Sun for the Racing on a Saturday but wouldn’t say they get startling results although as I say I only see this for the weekend racing. Whatever happens if a horse wins tipped in anyway by them it’ll be “The Sun that won it”
July 27, 2016 at 17:11 #1257838Although I do not disagree with the comments so far and sure we all require a bit of luck sometimes but as yet I have not seen the paper shouting out when that bit of luck arrives via the ratings. All I can say is they look to have flown very much under the radar. I would have expected the SUN to have made more of them than they do which is why I am asking for more information from others that may currently make use of them . . . and how!

I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysJuly 28, 2016 at 00:45 #1257915The Daily Mail use a Ratings System that I can’t make head nor tail of.
For a start, the top rated horse always scores 78, which I cannot tie to any known logical figure.
Sometimes the top horse in a race will be 78 and despite a huge field, we will see the lowest rated also marked in the 70’s. To me that makes no sense.
A random example from Monday in the Daily Mail was the 78 top rated horse being 11/8 Fav in their forecast and the next best on 77 being 14/1

The two horses were 4th and 5th in the race, as 11/10f and 25/1.
Safe to say that these mysterious ratings will throw up the occasional winner at big odds, but will be as much use as a wet smartie tube is as a marital aid long term.
There are no short cuts in racing, you just have to do the work if you want to beat the bookies.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
July 28, 2016 at 09:06 #1257932Reply posts are always due further comment. My old mucker Purwell is never short of a cryptic remark and never fails to bring a smile to my face and back in the day a newspaper was always used to do just that (before the IZAL days).
No more than I would be able to stomach a dose of daily depression from the Mail (stevecaution).
As Formcast is a mystery also to myself and the content of the Sun is really not a discussion topic or even the search for a short cut but if I can evaluate the ingredient or main ingredient it could have some value as an alternative to RPR or similar.
I have been watching the results, perhaps not too carefully but enough to make me take notice and my gut feeling is when some of the longer priced and unfancied winners turn up it is more than luck, although I must concede if every race every day is rated all that hard work deserves a little bit of good fortune.

July 28, 2016 at 13:08 #1257986Back in the day, the Daily Record had a form guide called Superform.
One punter got confused by this and thought that Superform was the name of the racecourse.
It was the only time I ever took a betting slip over the counter that had the horse’s name scrawled below the words:-
“2.35 Superform”

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

How do you dream up these these similes Steve
They brighten up my day in a dull accounts office
July 28, 2016 at 13:26 #1257995Not sure if this is common or not but my grandma once had a horse each way that won but she thought it had to run back the other way for her to collect
July 29, 2016 at 17:32 #1258209They do not upset me Purwell.
They are what they are and it is because everyone wants to be a comedian, forum content is dissolving into garbage and self destructing and will sadly die.

I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysJuly 30, 2016 at 06:35 #1258315One thing I have noticed about Sun ratings, although this is an impression rather than anything researched, they do seem to be quite literal and slow to react. Recent form, and latent potential are often not reflected in the rating, whereas past exceptional performances seem to stay built in regardless.
So for instance on Friday you’ll get winning favourite Poets Word rated 14th of 16 in the 530 Goodwood, whilst in the 345 you get Goldream 3 and 5 points clear in the ratings.
A big problem is that they do not seem to handle foreign racing so the 455 winner Al Jazi was unrated.
Comparing to the Mail, they agreed on 3 top rated horses yesterday at Goodwood with one winner, Franklin D, but it would seem that almost everyone knew about that one!July 31, 2016 at 08:50 #1258485My strike rate has been pitiful this season and was not much better last flat season but even I can beat newspaper tipsters and ratings in picking winners. I would never buy the SUN because of Murdoch.
