Was asked this last night at a pub quiz. 100 people were surveyed.
Name an English Derby winner?
The 3 most popular answers in order would be
August 4, 2014 at 14:57 #487504If it was 100 random people my guess would be Shergar, Red Rum and Desert Orchid but with the majority not being able to name anything.
August 4, 2014 at 15:10 #487505Not sure who was asked but it was 3 correct answers. So they probably didn’t take the wrong/no answers into account
August 4, 2014 at 15:33 #487507Well I would still think Shergar is a certainty and the other two are probably recent winners, Australia and something else?
August 4, 2014 at 15:45 #487509Shergar, Nijinsky, Mill Reef?
August 4, 2014 at 16:03 #487510Maybe it has disappeared from the public consciousness by now, but Authorized winning it for Frankie was a pretty big story in the national press at the time.

Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal ?
August 4, 2014 at 17:21 #487516Surely they meant "Derby Winners", there being no race named the "English Derby." The Derby needs no national identifier.

Beat me to it.
I guess it depends on the demographics of the 100. I would have thought Pinza may have been a shout a couple of decades ago with it being the Coronation year.
Would Camelot be one of the answers? Easy name, "summer of sports", reflected hype from Frankel and Black Caviar?
August 4, 2014 at 18:02 #487521With the recent topic about the Derby only pulling in 1.5 million viewers (probably reflecting the diminishing interest in our sport) and, taking into consideration, today’s generation … I’ll say Sea The Stars.

This is completely correct.

August 4, 2014 at 20:32 #487529For the non racing buff I would sad shergar, camelot(because of the name) and possibly Australia as the younger generation barely remember what happened last week never mind months ago.
August 4, 2014 at 20:56 #487531Shergar, Nijinsky and Roberto. I don’t know why, but it could be my age. I said it could be my age…….
August 4, 2014 at 22:04 #487537Shergar,Sea the stars and Pour Moi,i only put in Pour Moi as i remember a lot of my non racing friends taking a keen interest in the race that year for some reason. Was there someone different over the advertising for that year or something?

The Queen’s horse Carlton House was favourite. Probably would have been Top 3 if he had won. Again not sure where he got the question from so not sure when this was asked but there was no 21st century winner in there.
August 5, 2014 at 07:50 #487548Shergar, Nijinsky, Mill Reef?
You are so close Cormack. The answer was in reverse order :-
3) Mill Reef
2) Shergar
1) Nijinskywhich totally surprised me, as the disappearance of Shergar certainly made more headlines than any Derby winning performance. Most of the general public’s stock answers when asked about the naming of racehorses are Shergar, Red Rum and Neddy

Yes you are correct. But some bright spark shouted out "Is that the Kentucky Derby". Sorry for thinking that someone would do the same on here
