A very nice debut and he was stretching away at the end. Looks like a mile would suit him and he surely has a promising future.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Ortensia is an intended runner in the Nunthorpe, her odds are creeping in slightly across the boards.

I was leafing through unraced two year olds last month and picked this one out. I will see how the betting goes but will probably just watch. It will be very interesting to see how he performs, as he is entered in the Royal Lodge and the Dewhurst.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Back on topic, how about Crown Dependency?
Third in the Norfolk, now gelded and beaten in sellers.
All time low today of being last in a seller at Brighton.

    Crikey, beaten 4 1/2 lengths by a 50/1 shot rated only 38

Mind you, the even money favourite couldn’t beat it either, despite being rated 3 stone higher on 80

How about John Gosden’s Fencing? He has run poorly this year and was tipped up by several pundits at the start of the season.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Can’t believe how stingy the bookies are with their odds these days; Hammerfest is only 12/1 and I’m not sure he’ll run

    .

Trainer said today that Hammerfest would be better on good or good to firm:-

I am finding it as well to wait to the eve of the race given the unappetising odds on offer ante-post in these tough handicaps.

I used to despise the Shergar Cup but it is now one of my favourite race meetings.

You will have to forgive me, but that line sounds like it could be used to introduce oneself to a group therapy session, in similar vein to "My name is Joe and I am an alcoholic"

Cue the applause, group hug and then the discussion about how your problem started. Other members will tell of how they found themselves starting to enjoy Matt Chapman and the little Italian guy from the Ladbrokes adverts. Belissimo, fantastico….

Remember, Step 1 is admitting you have a problem ;)

Joni, I would be more about about Great Heavens than Shantaram. Although the latter is a lovely big colt with plenty of scope, his best form, in my mind, is his close second to Main Sequence in the Lingfield Derby Trial.

Great Heavens has improved through the ranks this season and beat Princess Highway by the best part of 4 lengths going away, after looking to have a lot to do at one stage, in The Irish Oaks. Princess Highway saw The Fugue off by 6 lengths previously and even if we accept that Princess Highway failed to confirm earlier superiority over Shirocco Star at The Curragh, then the subsequent win of The Fugue over older horses in The Nassau must be considered a form boost, given that she had only reeled in Shirocco Star in the last stride for second place in the Ribblesdale.

Tommy Chip, as I call him, is an improving colt and, as you say, his form has been boosted by his stablemate who disposed of the disappointing and probably over-rated Michelangelo in The Gordon. I am seriously concerned about the merit of the 3yo colts this season though. Tommy hasn’t got a lot in hand of those who were behind him at Ascot and you could make a case for Noble Mission at 18/1 I would have thought, and Thoughworthy at 20/1 might tempt some people.

I am drawing a pen through the lads and looking to girl power at Doncaster in September. Not the biggest horse, she will be outclassed in the paddock but she seems to be crying out for the trip and I am backing her to beat them all, Camelot included.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Ooh, i’ve ended up outside Aristotle’s cave with the philosophers!
Anyone would think it’s all financed by disinterested gentlemen anoraks having a fiver on the Derby!
    Wot a larf!
I hope you enjoy your ivory towers: do you wear white to the racecourse to signify purity and intellectual rigour?

As much as I love Nanton…I’m thinking of going for MOUNT ATHOS for this one Moe, he had a lot of the runners behind him in the John Smith’s Silver Cup and of course he’s a CD winner.
Out of Monjeu by a Slip Anchor mare he’s progressing with every race and Kieron Fallon will most probably be aboard.
nb: Landaman (Mark Johnston) Dual winner at Goodwood last week, worth a bit each way.

Time to get one of those new fangled mobiles Moe that connects to the internet and a Paddy Power online account then you won’t miss any of the action and can put a few sneaky bets on too

Don’t back MOUNT ATHOS, Cumani stated that he will NOT be running due to the weight he has:-

    http://www.racingpost.com/news/horse-ra … t7DaysNews

On Landaman’s chances, I would be a little bit worried about the trip, he seems to be a 10 furlong horse and his style of racing would be harder to employ over the Ebor distance.

Tell the kids not to bet on it!!

I have never placed a bet on a Shergar Cup race and I never will. Mickey Mouse meets It’s a Knockout, with horses thrown in. All we need is someone carrying out Britain’s Joker card and Stewart Hall guffawing inanely before screaming "We’re in the points, we’re in the points!!"

Eddie Waring must be turning in his grave.

Very informative post Meerkat, many thanks.

I used to manage a betting office for a small chain of bookies. I got out of the business once night racing, Sunday Racing and Terminator (The Rise of the Machines) took place. In the years since, the shops I visit have become more like Casinos. You are lucky if you can get about three minutes peace before some computer generated animal race is presented as an opportunity for you to be parted from your money. Punters gaze like zombies at the screens of legalised theft machines while you get the impression that the staff are just about to pass you through an industrial mangle to wring every penny out of you. It is a farce that there are token signs stating that "gambling should be fun" "Please bet responsibly" etc whilst at the same time you are bombarded with opportunities to lose money every other minute.

I remember a scene from an episode of the Simpsons where Marge Simpson was addicted to fruit machines. Waylon Smithers stepped up and asked Marge "Excuse me Madam, don’t you think you have gambled enough?" "NO!!" she replied, to which Smithers stated "Carry on then, it is just that the Gaming Commission requires that we ask our customers every 72 hours"

That about sums up the situation, you have about as much chance of seeing supermarkets refusing to sell cakes to obese customers.

Yes, it was declared a non-runner not long after my post. I just had a scan of the Betfair market; Fitz Flyer has been the most heavily traded runner by quite some margin with Signeur 2nd in the matched stakes. I must confess I am a bit concerned about the going as I have no idea how much rain they have had there today, if it proves too slow for him I hope he is not given too enterprising a ride in order to preserve or lower his handicap mark.

Signeur looks like he could go in again soon. Thought we had a forecast there for a moment. Happy with my horse’s run at the price he was, looked like the high draws had slightly the better of it.

Tax Free is a non-runner in that Ripon race tonight.

I have a feeling that "Non-trier" Bonnie Charlie will probably go off way shorter than he should be tonight. My own view is that if Bosun Breese was coming into this without his last time out duck egg at Ascot he would be a warmish fav. At 17/2 with Willie Hills, I’ll take a chance on him in this slightly easier grade.

Hasten back TAPK and best wishes.

Whilst I agree with you, the horse has run consistently well in these top handicap sprints for the last 18 months or so, hitting the cross bar on 3 or 4 occasions, so maybe that’s why there was some confidence behind him.

I know what you mean but if we accept that he is not a horse that wins very much, then you are really looking at place odds. I don’t mind that at say 16/1 or 20/1 but at 7/4 for the place you are actually betting around 4/11 your stake money with £2.75 back for a £1 ew bet
In 27 runner handicaps that is a quick road to the poorhouse. I would rather pick two and bet win only, as I did today. Each to their own though, all strategies are good when you hit the right horse!!

Can’t do sprint handicaps; got the winner of one, once but it was in France and was disqualified.

Sorry, I posted on the wrong thread earlier regarding the Stewards Cup.

I really like these handicaps, Steve, and they’ve been a happy hunting ground for me over the past few years, but I’m finding them a lot more difficult of late. Had a fabulous last minute ‘top up bet’ on Sesenta the other year, and also Dirar [we used to go when the race was on a Wednesday] but I’m out of touch these days.

The Ebor has never really been a good race for me, Further Flight and Hasten To Add are the only two I have backed in more than 20 years of trying. I tend to prefer races of 1 1/2 miles or less. There have been a few head scratching results the last 15 years or so but I will probably be drawn in on the day, despite my modest strike rate in the race.
