Remember the fuss a few years ago when the Bunbury Cup was renamed the 32Red Cup. Short lived thankfully and now back as it should be. 32Red seem to have disappeared from race sponsorship.
I suppose the “registered as” thing overcomes the total renaming issue however messy it looks.

Sticking with Ripon there is also the Ripon Bell-Ringer Handicap run over 1m4f towards the end of July. This named after the official who rings the bell each week to signify the opening of Ripon Market. A tradition dating back to the 1300’s according to this…..

Quito was indeed a David Chapman horse.
Belated thanks to Hawkeye – one of my favourites of recent years. Hope he has a long and happy retirement.

The Communications Director from Ascot waxed lyrical and at length about the attendance on Saturday and dismissed the violence as a couple of “minor scuffles”. Which tells you all you need to know about the racecourses attitude to this issue.
As long as the money is pouring into the coffers they don’t really care – similar situation with the airports.

Hate large crowds so prefer the bigger tracks on midweek fixtures.
    Sandown
    Ascot
    Ludlow
    Ripon
    Down Royal
would be my favourite 5, though I used to like Wolverhampton (local track) when it was turf.

No ones I dislike, though Kempton was always unlucky for me.

I well remember the introduction of the Tv’s into betting shops. As I recall 2 Tv’s per shop were allowed (first sport shown was Snooker)and I can remember travelling round with my Area Manager on the preceding Sunday making sure everything was in working order for the following days launch. Some shops operated with just the two TV’s and therefore kept the Boardmarkers for a couple of years until they eventually all had banks of screens fitted. First National televised in the shops was West Tip’s. Changed a lot of people’s betting habits as prior to the TV’s in the shops they used to be relatively quiet whilst the televised stuff was on and then the shops would fill up again once the programme finished. I was that sad I used to tape the Racing to watch when I got home!

As for Dancing Brave’s maiden win – pretty sure that was before televised racing in the shops. I was at Sandown that day and you just knew there was something special about the horse.

Keep them all open. There might be some ugly ducklings but they all add up to the rich tapestry and history of Racing. Hope the local authorities can stop this nonsense idea for Kempton.
Echo the previous post regarding Folkestone. Crying shame it closed.

Re- The 1975 Ashes visit. I’m pretty sure that it was as a result of the South Africa boycott. Their expulsion had left us with only 6 Test playing nations and the previous 2 seasons had seen 3 Test series between New Zealand and West indies in 1973 and India and Pakistan in 1974. Rather than the Rest of the World series that had taken place in 1970 instead of the South Africans, we then had the inaugural World Cup in the early part of the 1975 season followed by 4 Tests against the Aussies. They won the first easily, Mike Denness was sacked as captain, Tony Greig took over and insisted they pick David Steele – who performed so well he won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

Really sad news. I started working in the bookies in 1984 and Pat was the man for the rest of that decade (and some way into the 90’s). He was definitely the punters favourite. Was at Epsom for that Coronation Cup and had backed the forecast as I was an “Old Country” fan.
    RIP Pat

I’m a very infrequent poster, but a regular reader. I think it is one of the best sites, without some of the inflated ego’s that inhabit other racing forums. Will try and post a bit more!

Sad to see her packing it in. Hope she makes a go of it on ATR. Hope she doesn’t go down the reality TV road.

“G Force flopped last year in this”??? Didn’t he win it?
Apart from that I tend to agree with your analysis – GLB looks a good shout.
