11 on a Saturday of a busy, interesting racing day, and this is the first post in Horse Racing. TRF seems to have been steadily dying in the past weeks and months…a real shame.

I went horse riding last Sunday Joe, what a great experience that was.
Even jumped a low obstacle, everyone was sh!tting it and I was just as cool as Ruby Walsh…

Not been on a horse for decades Nathan, but I might try it again soon. Great fun, especially when you deceive yourself into thinking you’re in control

Most answers I get, are from you “steeplechasing”. I was keen to start a thread about Bob’s Worth and Simonsig running today. Don’t who might be interested to reply, but I guess I should give it a try.

I really hope not Joe. It is easily the best in my opinion and the only one I have ever bothered with. Some superb posters on here – yourself included! Not sure the jumps season has really got going yet so hopefully the interest will pick up again soon.

I’m a very infrequent poster, but a regular reader. I think it is one of the best sites, without some of the inflated ego’s that inhabit other racing forums. Will try and post a bit more!

Unfortunately this site has been almost dead for a good while. If Champions meeting, Breeders Cup, the start of the jumps etc can’t get people posting on here what will? Big races come along and barely anyone posts their views.

I don’t pretend to know the reasons for the inactivity but it really is such a shame.

Forums as a whole are becoming less popular as people communicate via Facebook, Twitter and instant messaging.

People are falling out of love with the concept as it is increasingly seen as out of date to post on a forum with moderators who can dictate what is posted and said, more people find the freedom of Facebook and Twitter a better source to communicate on their favourite topic.

All forums go through ups and downs the best forums get through the slow times and there will be peaks and troughs I am sure this one will see it posters recover but to the OP I have noticed that when notable things happen in horse racing I come on here and find there is no thread or if there is one there are few replies.

One example was when a horse was controversial disqualifed from a race a few weeks ago or the St Leger controversial result the comments on it were very few.

That’s basically how I see it as well Steve, and I’m sure you’re right, it will recover. There was a period I think last year, or maybe the year before though, when it was dead. It’s still miles better than others.

I’d noticed it a wee bit quieter the last couple of weeks, but as the jumps season kicks in, it tends to get busier**, from my experience anyway. As Joe said, was a decent days racing, but maybe just lacking that really big race to get people talking, a bit of a strange weekend, but some nice horses running tomorrow.

I’m very guilty of not spending too much time on the “Horse Racing” section of the forum, but I’ll definitely make more of a point from now on.

**not trying to incite flat vs jump debate with that remark, just more people spending less time out and about during the winter, and with the build up to Cheltenham, and The Grand National, the biggest events of the year in the sport, then naturally more people will drift back here…………..I think

    I hope not….

To be honest, I’ve had some ‘real life’ stuff which has meant I’ve been unable to spend as much time working on TRF this last ten months or so. I’m going to try over the winter to free up some additional time to livening things up and maybe doing some more promo stuff to attract debate(rs). I have some ideas (and would welcome any more!)

I too have noticed some ‘big’ racing stories go without mention on TRF and, although our traffic still stays pretty high (we’re by miles the biggest UK dedicated horse racing forum in terms of traffic), the engagement seems to have taken a dip, maybe we’re all talked out! I would say that we do have a lot of sections and some of them, like the Big Races section for example, are reasonably active, but the Horse Racing section definitely seems to have come off the bridle this last year or so.

As mentioned, I’d welcome ideas and/or help to assist us inject a little oomph.

I post my my angle is more horse based than betting based and I am Nat Hunt not flat, I could tell you that I thought P.Nicholls bumper horses yesterday looked below his usual standard, Fazakerley looked dire, who bought that? It is quiet on here but then perhaps we are not as rude as other sites and should engage in more robust insults.

Yeah, it does seem pretty dead…..I look most days and quite often there’s hours since the last post and three or four threads down it’s days since a post

I think it could help if the ‘Big Races’ forum was merged with this one……….I just tend to look here then move on, I don’t go round the sub-forums. If big race discussion was here it might make the site more active.

I think of myself as an occasional poster rather than a regular so all the ‘banter’ between regulars passes me by, not that I’m against it per se just that I don’t know who the people are. Like all forums it can come across as cliquey but that’s probably inevitable, It happens on every other forum I visit. I guess if there’s not much else happening the predominant impression is of cliqueyness – that might dissipate if the forum had more actual topics.

Final point……… the other main racing forum that I post on is also ‘dead’. Maybe racing fans are just not very chatty

I love this site, and visit it pretty much daily – although I don’t post myself. I have been a NH racing fan for as long as I can remember, but like to keep up-to-date on what is going on under both codes. I don’t use Twitter or Facebook, and mourn the passing of many good forums that have died the death since everyone seems to prefer to correspond via other media. As has been said already, the tone on TRF is generally much more tolerant than elsewhere, and there are some genuinely knowledgeable posters from whom I learn much – particularly in relation to betting, which baffles me utterly!

I hope TRF continues to exist – there are many discussions which are much better suited to a forum, and I suspect that there will eventually be a backlash against platforms such as Twitter and FB. There are some excellent wordsmiths on here, so keep it up!

I would like to point out this is not a racing issue, I post on other forums which are not horse racing and all of them have at least one thread asking if the forum is dying.

It is a trend at the moment as I explained before forums are currently out of fashion with people liking the freedom of social media, forums are the equivalent of royal mail and twitter and facebook are the email.

I know one forum I posted on all the mods but one just packed up and left for facebook leaving the forum open to spam.

Who knows if forums will become cool again or if they will become the new Myspace and die quickly but as long as the Dave is willing to keep it going and people continue to contribute then the forum will never die.
