I would say newbury, the last ditch there is as big as anywhere nowadays and as for cheltenham…there Is a lot of give in them nowadays, indeed the 2nd last on the old course and the 4th last on the new course are now trolly fences
Watching horses jumping the seven fences down the back through binoculars at sandown is one of the pleasures of national hunt racing and I can highly recommend it.
My one gripe with sandown is that they chuck so much water on the flat course in the summer nowadays and leads to bottomless ground for the hurdles races in the winter, more so than years ago it seems and yes the fences are softer as they are everywhere now and I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or not?January 24, 2015 at 10:13 in reply to: Channel 4 ‘in denial’ suggests former racing coverage boss #502657Al least bubble head Gina has found her true role with the itv style car comp lol
I thought as there hasent been any anti ch4 stories in the post for a while they might have been warned off… The problems are simple to me…just cut these endless pre race interviews and just show the horses in the paddock and going to post or are they not allowed to in a wheeze to get people to subscribe to racing uk ?
I can’t help thing that their choice on who fronts grand national day is a pivotal moment for the team. What about the Peter marsh chase over 3m1f ? This was started in the same place as the 3m1f betfair chase despite The later being run on the flat course so to me one of these race distances is incorrect
The headline "streight to cheltenham" appears every day in the racing post and I feel the way things are going they could shut down jumping in january&february and it wouldn’t affect the festival a jot
January 1, 2015 at 11:00 in reply to: Worse racecourse of the yr 2014. Let’s start with Warwick #500034Chepstow is the pits and has been totally ruined by ARC,I used to go once a month but despite living 20mins away I don’t go near the place and judging by this weeks bad press I haven’t missed anything.
When I think of that lovely old paddock and winners enclosure and all the gold cup horses I used to see there,I find it all rather sadI watched it and found it a bit shocking to be honest…I now drive to course each day but fifteen years ago I always went by train and never saw drunken yobs like was shown on c5, now either I was lucky and missed them or the behaviour of "casual racegoers" has plummeted in recent times.
One things for sure, anyone planning for the first time to go the festival by train will be thinking twice after watching this programmeWhy on earth is there THREE graduation chases this week?
Interesting to read that ruby Walsh was surprised about the state of the ground for the open meeting after all the water chucked on the course aged of the showcase in October.
This is a classic case of putting the cart before the horse due to JCR greed and has resulted in mid winter ground at cheltenham in November!I understand this years race is over the same course as last year and this new betfair hurdle will be on the outer flat course but as as ever with the "modern haydock" you can’t be sure until you see it on the day
Back in the days of the bbc,the big race was run at 1.50 but at least it’s cloudy at the moment at cheltenham
Good to hear Mike back calling the open meeting today,if I wasent for last year it would be a run stretching back to 1997!
Can only think that the Cheltenham racegoers asked for him backGood to see Ascot get plenty of runners on their first days jumping and I hope it continues for the next meeting that clashes with haydock,as for the 3runner West Yorkshire hurdle,I’d rather watch that than the flat fare any day of the week.
I note that nicholls is going to run silvinaco conti in the Charlie hall so as not to need the run in the betfair chase.
But then is once again running him between Boxing Day and the gold cup,I can’t help wondering if that will be the plan for gold cup horses in the future and beyond?Who’s the joker that planned Chepstow to go off 5mins before aintree all afternoon? Given that Chepstow can’t run on time,it was obvious that races would clase but despite this wasent wishful thinking fantastic
AP your so right about the Wincanton races,I can still remember seeing looks like trouble have his comeback in the John Bull chase and let’s not forgot they’ve dug up all the fences and replaced with portible ones.
I wonder how many runners Ascot,s amlin chase will get this year after last seasons match? The races future must be hanging by a threadNext year sees a bit of a boost for Sunday jumping, sandowns first meeting of the 2015/16 switches to a Sunday,as does the old roan chase but with loss of ch4 I guess.
I also note the welsh national is on sun dec 27 so does this mean ch4 are showing this and kempton? As they currently only show the kempton 2nd day when it’s on a Saturday. -
