Agree.
Always, felt he would have been a better "anchor-man" for Channel 4 rather than Luck.

Agreed Matron. Surprised Richard Hoiles or the usual commentator Ian Bartlett aren’t doing this meeting. Catt always look relaxed when hosting on ATR would make C4 more watchable if he replaced Lord Snooty and the usually absent Clare Balding.
November 14, 2014 at 22:04 #495168Good to hear Mike back calling the open meeting today,if I wasent for last year it would be a run stretching back to 1997!
Can only think that the Cheltenham racegoers asked for him backNovember 15, 2014 at 06:45 #495190A commentator can add or detract from a meeting, I’m afraid Mike can only detract, in fact I find him a distraction during a race.
Littered with errors, eg handing back to the presenter in a panic when the starter had his flag up, calling the last, the third last and the usual missing or slow mention of fallers. The sun had also gone down by 3.00pm according to him.
One things for sure he’s not employed for the quality of his commentaries, I remember that Wallis guy at Newmarket kept wanting Croc
November 16, 2014 at 14:38 #495449I think enough is enough as far as Mike Cattermole is concerned, another terrible call today in the first.
He totally blew the finish first calling Dark Spirit Derrintogher York and then Derrintogher Bliss and the colours weren’t even that similar.
Simply not good enough in one of the NH seasons major festivals to have such an amateur show from the commentator.
November 17, 2014 at 16:17 #495574He isnt a patch on Simon Holt.I can understand it if colours were similar but as pointed out by myself and others he calls the wrong horse. Thankfully he wasnt at Kempton last Monday when Good Luck Charm WAS 4th and although the 4th and 5th were very close the commentator announced GLC correctly and quickly and this time I was right to go to the winners enclosure.
I have never liked Mike Cattermole, his mike was on one day when he was off camera and I heard him be very rude and arrogant to a member of staff at C4 demanding an umbrella.November 17, 2014 at 16:40 #495578Catt’s commentaries are getting embarrassing and it’s not as though he’s especially narrative, eagle-eyed or has anything else to redeem his frequent mistakes. He just repeats the same cliches in every race.
I don’t understand the comments praising his work as a presenter either. He came across as creepy when working with Emma Spencer and was often also shown to be lightweight in his racing knowledge compared to the rest of the team.
November 17, 2014 at 17:40 #495584I agree he is inept. He missed bold henry until near the last
November 17, 2014 at 21:32 #495617Why does he keep getting the high profile meetings ? I could understand it if he was at Kempton on a Wednesday night but this was the first major jumps festival of the season and all 3 days were littered with errors.
A few years ago some commentators like Jim McGrath were put on a warning so why isn’t anything done now ?
January 25, 2015 at 07:36 #502834Called Tap Night the winner at the end of a race yesterday
nevermind omitting Walkon’s pulled up.Don’t know he continues to get these high profile meetings, should be restricted to Southwell, couldn’t do much damage there.
January 25, 2015 at 13:49 #502890He called Big Fella Thanks the winner and ignored Annacotty rallying until after the line, another poor call by Cattermole and I just hope he doesn’t get any days at the Festival as he is just not good enough these days for such a high profile meeting
January 25, 2015 at 14:21 #502906He is poor and should go.
January 25, 2015 at 21:18 #502975It’s sacrilege, I know, but I’ve always enjoyed Mike Cattermole’s commentaries.
He has got a great voice and delivery, conveys great warmth and often touches of humour in his commentaries, often adds in little pieces of interesting extra information during them and does a good job in my opinion.
I would sooner listen to him any day of the week than a few of the others, including one or two of the more favoured ones.
He certainly shouldn’t be losing his job on the basis of what people who don’t know what a difficult job it is say are mistakes.
He lost his Channel 4 presenting job very unfairly. I would hate to see him given the chop as a racecourse commentator as well but I realise I am in a minority (again) on this.
January 25, 2015 at 21:22 #502977How would you feel watching SKY’s football and the commentator continually made mistakes and called players by the wrong name ? The commentator wouldn’t last very long which is why I and others can’t understand despite a long list of mistakes at Grade 1 tracks Mike Cattermole is still given the meetings to call.
Is there any other commentator at the moment who makes as many mistakes as Cattermole does ?

I agree 100% completely with that.
I listen to plenty of commentators as I am sure everyone does here, they all make plenty of mistakes.
I’ll burst a bubble from the past as well, Peter O’Sulllivan made plenty. If you randomly pull some old videos from YouTube and listen his commentaries in full you will find lots of mistakes.
I think its a bit trendy to knock Mike Cattermole, I don’t know why, maybe its some kind of male jealousy I don’t know.
He has great style and the sort of relaxed presentation that sets him apart from the others.
No, I’m not Mike Cattermole and have never met him.

Just my opinion obviously.
January 26, 2015 at 20:03 #503099It is all about mistakes, no commentator should be allowed to make the amount of mistakes that Cattermole has and still be in a high profile position.
March 7, 2015 at 07:15 #806514Someone please tell me Mike isn’t commentating at Cheltenham
How can top tracks keep doing it when commentators like the excellent Alan Howes are on the sidelines? - AuthorPosts
