I know Dawn Run was a popular winner and all that, but everytime I see the race again, I’m willing Wayward Lad to hold back the mare. One day he will (just as crisp will last home one day) :)

Peter isn’t popular with the voting public definitely. I don’t think he’ll be top bloke, and he won’t win.

This week’s betting on the eviction is not as interesting as last week…

    James Fox 4/9
Carolynne Good 3/1
Alistair Griffin 5/1
Peter Brame 10/1
Alex Parks 50/1

A more accurate market this week. But the eyecatcher is Peter at 10/1. A possible scenario is a bottom three of Alex (it is possible), Peter and another. In this case, Alex would be instantly saved by the teachers, and Peter could well lose the student vote.

It’s not exactly a likely scenario, but it is certainly possible, and 10/1 is good value about it happening, so I’ve had a small investment on that this week.
If the thread is dead, then stop posting on it.

The thread is not dead, because at just 9.30 this morning, the owner of the forum posted what I thought was an interesting post. So it keeps going.

I really object to self appointed moderators telling people when and when not to post.
You did. Was that not obvious from my post?

Mouthing off? Tsh and pish. They’re very good selections, I’m sure. I bet you show a much better profit than I. I’d never back them, that’s all I said, did I not?

Jim, I’m sorry but this makes me really angry. If you don’t like thread, then don’t read it. It is as simple as that.

When you’re a moderator of the forum, you can lock the thread. Around the same time, perhaps hell will have frozen over, and I will have backed one of your tips.

Alastair Down slated the 2001 National, and I was suprised (and pleased, although I didn’t agree with his piece) that his career wasn’t knackered afterwards.

Well, nepotism is rife in every industry. It’s not fair and all that, but it is a natural fact of life.

If I had a job for someone, I would feel much safer offering the job to someone I know rather than risking a lot of money on a complete stranger – after all, there is no known and proven method of finding the best person for a job.

As for Derek Thompson, this isn’t a case of nepotism. If he is a respected pundit, then it stands to reason that he’d be a natural choice to speak on a tipping service (I don’t think he runs it by the way) (*)

I do feel sorry for people who want to work in racing in whatever capacity but can’t get a break because they aren’t well connected. But it is possible to break in, and plenty do.

(*) notice my if in that sentence, and….

    > there is no need to ring his premium line?

IMHO, no need whatsoever, under any circumstances.

If Hors La Loi wins, I’ll streak around my workplace for 15 minutes on Friday morning.

I was watching the race without commentary, so I wasn’t aware the fall was fatal until I saw the dreaded chequered flags on the next circuit.

I was under the impression the blinkers seemed to have sorted out his jumping; he seemed much straighter with only a few occasional kinks. I don’t think connections can be blamed for persisting with him; he was top class and they were working hard on improving his jumping.

A very sad day for racing, I will miss Baccanaal.

    Bertie/Daisey,

Yes, the Gold Cup card will be Friday, so the possible line up above would fall on Wednesday or Thursday. The Champion Hurdle will stay on the Tuesday.

Bertie, yes there was a fourth day a few years back when Friday was St Patrick’s Day. I forget what it was like, which says it all really!

    Hi Mesh,

According to the egg.com advert, they are made by "magnificent idustries" I think.

As you know, I agree with what you say about not fixing things that aren’t broken, but one thing that I think that sometimes people miss is that the card is a bit diluted already; ie it isn’t 20 races of the VERY highest quality, as some people assume. Races like the Pertemps Hurdle, the Coral Cup, the Kim Muir, County Hurdle etc are very good races in their own right, but they aren’t tippety-top class championship races.

So its not as if the NH world is desparately short of championship races and therefore need a fourth day to fit them all in.

If anything, this could be an argument to shorten to two days ( )

I have no problems with a Cross Country chase – but there is room for that in the three days (at the end of Tuesday’s card say).

My problem is the diluting the quality of the programme. It is perfect at the moment, tampering with it can only damage it.

Presumably two races will be shifted from the first three days, making each day a six-race card. And also, presumably one race will need to be a championship race. So which one will move? Whichever it is, that day’s card is weakened. The Arkle perfectly complements the Champion Hurdle; The RSA sits well with the Champion and the same applies to the Gold Cup/Stayers combination.

Let’s assume they take the Arkle and the Grand Annual across to Friday:

    2:00 EBF Final Novice Hurdle
2:35 4yo Handicap Hurdle (Listed?)
3:15 Arkle Challenge Trophy (Class A Grade 1)
3:50 2839th Year of The Grand Annual etc (Listed)
4:20 4yo Bumper
5:00 Cross Country "Farce" (Class B?)

It doesn’t look a bad card, its just not as good as what we have now – and remember that Tuesday won’t be as good without the Arkle.

Just checked the RP article "after long consultation with interested parties". Oh yes. If the party they are consulting agrees with them, they consult. If they disagree, they put on the "Laa Laa Laa I’m not listenening" headgear.
Hi Judge,

I share your concern about the UK coverage.

I hated the idea of single coloured caps, for the following reasons:

    1) it might work when there are always six runners, ie in dog racing, but I don’t think it helps much in horse racing, where there could be loads of runners, and there’s no way I can remember the cap colour for (say) number 13.

    2) I don’t find it very easy to identify caps on TV anyway; it is more the combination of all the colours, plus the colour of the horse (except for Chestnuts of course), and the horse’s headgear.

    3) It is moving dangerously towards the idea of uniform colours for all numbered horses; "come on the 4 horse"!

    4) It’s just plain dumbing down.

    5) If I were an owner who had carefully chosen a really nice set of silks (like Daylight has!), I’d be bloody annoyed when a red and green striped cap gets stuck on the top of it, just to help some "novice punters" who are supposed to be watching on channel 4, but aren’t because neighbours is on BBC 1 (probably).
I thought it would take off too. I much prefer point-to-point to attending a stuffy regular NH meeting. I bet the pointing purists loathed the idea of television sticking their beaks in though.
