Think I was responsible for a lot of the red herrings
I think we all were

Very possible, indeed quite likely
Aha! Ralph Moore himself is in South Africa and getting on a bit. I’ve not met or spoken to him as I believe he’s not too well.
I’m meeting with Ralph’s son in September (for the first time, we just met on email this year) I’ve sent him the clipping – it would be good to print off this thread – is there a way to do this? He knows less about the family than we do at this juncture.
As I was wading through the 1947 Northern Echo, I thought I saw an article about the first photo finish prior to this race.
Also interesting to read the headlines in 1947 about austerity and Greece as well! Thanks Madrid. There’s a possibility that R Moore was Bill’s brother Ralph, as my Mum had said that he had trained to be a jockey. However, he too ended up in the Navy. Ralph was a year younger than Bill so would have been 15 years old – is that possible?
Thanks so much for these extensive tantalising further facts all. Sadly I don’t understand all of it.
Espmadrid: “Gracious Son was bought in for 450 guineas.” Does that mean it was sold again?Isinglass : “Mademoiselle Mars” That will be very interesting if that was also from the family. More research on the cards…
I’d heard that my grandfather had gone bankrupt in the early ’50s – possibly due to the cost of horseracing?
He ended up selling agricultural machinery and then something to do with engineering, according to various marriage and death certificates. Thanks Steeplechasing, I’ve downloaded it, hope you don’t mind
Sorry for leaving you hanging earlier, but the Brit Library banned the forum from wifi (gambling?)
Anyway, I just want to say thank you all for guding me through this, I’ve learned so much about horses, maybe one day I’ll join a syndicate. Next I need to find out where George Henry Moore was born (father Peter), but that’s another story and another forum perhaps. It is good to know that the family story was correct and that is my grandad’s horse in the picture!
The trainer was ‘Bullock’ – any ideas?
And these were the final results
Almost spot on SteveCaution – I think it was Ripon*. I’ll load up the image in mo’
edit: No you’re right, it’s Redcar
BINGO!!
Just for now I’ll give you a clue – the picture was taken on 18th August 1947 (I was wrong about the light)
It would be good to put it into a newsletter – but hold back until I find out on Thursday – the newsletter could still use it, but with any info I find.
In the bottom right corner is an imprint reading ‘Northern Echo …’ then something afterwards which I can’t make out. So I presumed that the pic was seen in the paper and they requested a copy afterwards.
So, D L Jones and Monsieur Doyasbere are picture doubles.
The Forces Reunited site tells us Basil (Bill) Moore served on HMS Bruce 1947/48 and the site shows that picture.
Is Norette Moore Bill’s daughter ?
I can’t hide on the internet can I
Yes, I am. He was somewhat errant and my parents split in ’57. He emigrated to South Africa, and I’ve been trying to trace him this last 15 years or so. Finally traced a cousin this year who sent me this image a few months ago. First I’d ever seen what he looked like and then I found out he died in the late 80s (cue violins)…I’m really trying to find out if the stories he told my mum about his family owning racehorses are true (I think not).
That’ll be the London one, Drone. Nicely air conditioned for Thursday.
Please do Crepello, any help is much appreciated.
Hi all, I’ve decided I might go insane (as might yourselves) trying to solve this. So I’ve booked the newspaper from 47 to 49 and will get a peek on Thursday next at the British Library. IF the image is not in there (omg) I might take to drink

I am getting ‘horse blind’ and probably confused now. I know this horse has the wrong date but the pattern of the wonky blaze is almost identical (but s/he has no socks)
Phil Drake. Is this the same family or gene pool?
However, just to widen the search a bit. The sailor was moved to HMS Drake Plymouth in Sept ’48 and stayed there until Sept ’49 when he was assigned to HMS Jamaica and headed for Korea. I wondered if there is a possibility that he used an old hat during ’49? The later date would make him 18 in the picture.
It’s a great site that aaron… can lose many hours browsing.
I’ve done some homework on the historical papers searching for Doyasbere and these are the possibles I’ve found. I believe there are no more, but never say never… The papers websites use optical character recognition and it’s often difficult to determine the horses’ names, so some may be wrong.

But thanks so much for all your help
Sorry apracing – I missed your post (would have saved me a half hour on Goggle! )
Thanks both, I think we’re getting closer, I think we have definitely identified my jockey, although perhaps not my horse. I too got sidetracked with the Derby of that year as Doyasbere was on Royal Drake, and the sailor in summer 1948 was on his way from HMS Bruce to HMS Drake (Plymouth shore base). This would have been reason enough for the picture to be set up (also Sailors Guide would have been good too)
Eventually I’m going to have to go to the British library and trawl through 2 years of the Northern Echo – but it would be nice to tie it down to a particular month.
