I thought there was a slight resemblance to Harry Wragg.
Other than that all I can offer is George Formby
June 27, 2015 at 21:16 #1117125I don’t know if you’re studying the same pic , Ginge , but in the one I saw , The Bug
has a very distinctive white nose and his white markings ( hind legs )
are different. As far as I know there is only one photo H.
Seems to me you’re confusing white with shine on the “nose”. Appears to me the white ends at exactly the right position on the head. Seems you may not be allowing for the different angle and what is obscured from view on legs. When you consider how The Bug’s off hind leg white would look like from a view the same as Norette’s pic – it is very similar. What appears white on Norette’s pic’s near hind (furthest from view) is obscured on The Bug’s pic.Value Is EverythingJune 27, 2015 at 22:33 #1117225It’s not The Bug, he had too much of a blaze and also a distinctly flaxen tail. He also had only one white leg behind and our horse has two.He doesn’t have lop ears either and wore a noseband in his races.

June 28, 2015 at 08:55 #1117427I’m confused, I thought the jockey had been decided (The Frenchman) Tim James has told us.
How can all these jockeys, Carr, Breasley, Wragg, Smirke, Formby even Richards look like him, although how anyone thinks he looks like Gordon Richards is beyond me.
The jockey is smiling in the picture and the sailor has a spring in his step as though they have won. Would Harry Carr be smiling if he had finished second? Has anyone got a smiling picture of Harry Carr?
I wouldn’t bank on the colours, plenty of horses even now run in different colours and I wouldn’t bank on the weather being damp, they might have had sunny intervals.
Does anyone know Peter O’Sullevan? Bet he would know.
June 28, 2015 at 09:01 #1117444Hi all, I’ve decided I might go insane (as might yourselves) trying to solve this. So I’ve booked the newspaper from 47 to 49 and will get a peek on Thursday next at the British Library. IF the image is not in there (omg) I might take to drink

Good move Norette and good luck. Is that the British Libray at Thorp Arch near Wetherby or head office in London?
This has been a fine thread but we’re now going round in circles so let’s wait until we get your report
I’ve decided everyone looked the same in the black-and-white ’40s – the men all dourly masculine and the women all demurely feminine
June 28, 2015 at 09:38 #1117471I have shared the picture (not the thread) on a Racing History site on Facebook I go on. It’s a very busy one frequented by many mature people from the racing industry. If this isn’t okay Norrette please let me know and I’ll take it down. thought it might give an answer.
June 28, 2015 at 11:07 #1117532That’ll be the London one, Drone. Nicely air conditioned for Thursday.
Please do Crepello, any help is much appreciated.
June 28, 2015 at 12:43 #1117580June 28, 2015 at 13:40 #1117606A poster on one of the Facebook forums suggests the jockey as DL Jones a Welsh born dual purpose rider who was active in the 1940s. He had a connection with Northern stables as he rode Black Pampas for Charles Elsey in the 1948 Derby. A link to a picture:

the overwheming favourite to be our man.Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
June 28, 2015 at 16:17 #1117637York might be a red herring several people are saying it is Thirsk and one said it is 1947. I await more information…..!
June 28, 2015 at 16:52 #1117658Right! A break through I hope. Apparently this picture is framed up in the Jockey’s Room at Thirsk Racecourse. It is thought it might be a winner of a classic trial.
June 28, 2015 at 17:36 #1117667Therefore , if we can find the winner of the Thirsk Classic Trial in 1947/48
we might be getting there – maybe ???Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
June 28, 2015 at 20:43 #1117727Also found out the Bill Elsey gave the photograph to Thirsk racecourse so this suggests strongly that it is one of Charles Elsey’s horses. The person with the information was an apprentice at a yard near Thirsk.
Think we might be moving in the right direction now. Someone on this thread said they could check all the winners from those years. Maybe they should look at important races at Thirsk in early summer 1947 where Charles Elsey trained a winner ridden by DL Jones.June 28, 2015 at 20:46 #1117728Christ! How bizaare is it that a sailor is leading up a horse with Davy Jones on board?
June 28, 2015 at 21:26 #1117757So, D L Jones and Monsieur Doyasbere are picture doubles.
The Forces Reunited site tells us Basil (Bill) Moore served on HMS Bruce 1947/48 and the site shows that picture.
Is Norette Moore Bill’s daughter ?
