An interesting and well thought out piece which has me looking at N.H.formlines from a different perspective.

I agree with almost all of that you have said. Things are different nowadays. With the exception of the first time in a handicap, where horses often improve markedly in their form compared with their runs in maiden races and are often well backed to do so.I gave up each way betting long time as once a jockey sees he has no chance of winning they are less interested in being placed. You see the difference in the Shergar Cup event at Ascot each year where placing add to the points each team gets.

The old course at Southwell back in the black and white telle days was best described as basic. All of the outbuildings were wooden including the stands. Still it was interesting. In those bygone days even the connections did their betting on course. That’s where my Grandad’s hearing aid came in handy it’s surprising what you could hear around the parade ring. One day I heard two of the greats of the Northern scene in conversation.W.A.Stevenson and Neville Crump both of who had won a decent race or two.

The media professionals in the sport are reliant on the jockeys for their copy, next TV interview etc. If they criticise jockey for poor rides the get ignored come winning interview time. I saw it happen when someone had the courage to criticise a Ryan Moore ride and Ryan blanked him for several weeks after.

Sorry, but I didn’t explain my views very well.Horseracing is a niche sport. On a list of most watched U.K. sports it even is listed below that of American football. In spite of this the fact that we have two TV channels dedicated to the sport means the fan has never been better served.

What a bunch of moaning Minnie’s!.The horse racing fan has never had it so good. When I first started betting the only place to LISTEN to the race commentaries were cigarette smoked filled Betting Offices. Yes £30pm for a stand alone channel may seem a lot,but the amount of people that are uninterested in the product is evidenced by the coverage of our sport by the country’s daily newspaper’s. It’s virtually nonexistent.
