    Frightfully delicate these Somerset openers. It must be the diet.

    Frightfully delicate these Somerset openers, can you remember the South African Jimmy Cook who was there for about three seasons, he hit over 2000 county championship runs every year, the problem back then was the rest of the team, Cook use to carry the lot of them. Peter Bowler could stick around aswell but it was like watching paint dry. As for Lathwell i loved watching him bat, he went to England and they for some reason tried changing his technique, never the same after that experience must of destroyed him.

    I see Steve Harmison has injured Matthew Hoggard’s right thumb which has ruled Hoggy out of the next test. Broad, Sidebottom and Anderson better be on their guard if they get within a 50 metre radius of big Steve. im guessing by what Andrew Hughes wrote at the start of the thread it would’nt be a bad idea in Anderson’s case :lol:

    [quote= Any news on Caddick?

    There was a piece in the Western Daily Press(local paper) yesterday which went along the lines of Caddick due to return in next week’s CC clash with Kent has had another two week setback. Director of cricket Brain Rose said "He is still quite a way off. What has kept him back has been bronchitis. He has done very little training and looks pretty weak. He has to get his strength back over the next week to ten days."

    It did have draw written all over it, but Somerset were in such a strong position its a little dissapointing they could’nt match their efforts of yesterday. Somerset have shown though in their first three cchampionship games that they can compete.

    Whilst i agree it is more eye catching to watch the beauitful game played with attacking flair, as a neutral i was falling to sleep watching Rangers in europe but i can also appreciate the determination, work rate and team work that went into Rangers european games, if they had gone all out to against Fiorentina they would have been taken apart, good manager tactic’s imo. Man Utd have a superb range of attacking option’s but also show not much mercy when defending i.e vs Barcelona in the first leg of the semi final, Fergie hailed tactical genius.

    i have to thank Sussex for winning the toss and putting Somerset into bat on day 1 in glorious conditions, today was very overcast with plenty of drizzle(window cleaning was put on hold) but such was the condition’s that it suited Trego, Jones and Willoughby, hopefully a full days play tomorrow and Somerset just might get their first county championship win in division one since 2002. failing that then my prediction of a draw is on but i know what i’d rather happen.

    Great achievement by Rangers on reaching the final, shame about the result but Zenit are a good side. Rangers or any team hardly ever get credit by other team’s fans look at Liverpool and what they achieved in reaching 2 champions league final’s in 3 season’s all you hear/read is how lucky they were and boring. i hope Rangers go on to win the league this season because in my opinion the team has deserved to be champions.

    i personally think the decision on where the final takes place should be decided at say the semi final stage but that makes to much sense for UEFA to work out.

    Thanks Jeremy, i started watching cricket in the late 80’s and thought that name was familiar. Crap pitch inspector by all accounts :lol: :lol:

    Have just read on teletext that the Trent Bridge pitch passed an inspection from Tony Piggot( was he an ex cricketer?, im sure i’ve heard of him), so im guessing the Old Trafford pitch must have passed aswell because of their league points. :x dont mind me though it’s just wishful thinking on my behalf. :wink:

    I think the falling of a certain number of wickets in a day will automatically trigger a response from the pitch inspectorate, but that needn’t result in a docking of points if they’re satisfied good bowling and / or bad batting caused the flurry rather than a substandard pitch.

    gc

    Yeah your right GC, it’s 16 wickets i believe that triggers the inspection, i understand what you say about good bowling and bad batting plus the weather could play a part but it would be nice to hear or read the findings of these pitch reports. Lancashire also got turned over by Scotland at Old Trafford days before in a very low scoring game plus their match vs Somerset was very bowler friendly. Perhaps their batsmen are not as good as we are made to believe.

    1 Run away for maximum batting bonus points for Somerset, still favour the draw but fingers crossed for a Somerset win. Is James Kirtley injured? im sure he was included in the squad when i checked last night.

    20 wickets fall at Trent Bridge today, following last weeks 20 wickets at Old Trafford i thought there were deducted points for poor wickets/pitch surely Lancashire last week was a case for this, i’ve heard or read nothing but in the past have seen teams docked points for less wickets in a day.
