in 1993, when Sussex failed to defend 321 against Warwickshire in one of the best one-day finals I’ll ever see.
Please don’t mention that game, the mere thought of it still makes me feel physically sick.
May 16, 2008 at 21:33 #163960i have to thank Sussex for winning the toss and putting Somerset into bat on day 1 in glorious conditions, today was very overcast with plenty of drizzle(window cleaning was put on hold) but such was the condition’s that it suited Trego, Jones and Willoughby, hopefully a full days play tomorrow and Somerset just might get their first county championship win in division one since 2002. failing that then my prediction of a draw is on but i know what i’d rather happen.

May 17, 2008 at 15:44 #164069It did have draw written all over it, but Somerset were in such a strong position its a little dissapointing they could’nt match their efforts of yesterday. Somerset have shown though in their first three cchampionship games that they can compete.

Ah. Did you have a chunk on?
TV replays not being what they were then compared to now, I always wondered whether the decision near the end of the game where Franklyn Stephenson looked to have stopped the ball just before rope, only to see the umpire signal a four, was the right one or not. It would have made all the difference. Thoughts?

May 18, 2008 at 19:34 #164249[quote= Any news on Caddick?
There was a piece in the Western Daily Press(local paper) yesterday which went along the lines of Caddick due to return in next week’s CC clash with Kent has had another two week setback. Director of cricket Brain Rose said "He is still quite a way off. What has kept him back has been bronchitis. He has done very little training and looks pretty weak. He has to get his strength back over the next week to ten days."

May 18, 2008 at 20:33 #164264Thanks for that news Nathan. Doesn’t sound at all good. I wish him well and hope he’s back soon.
Not that you needed him today. Pretty convincing crushing of Worcester who were near enough full strength. Meanwhile the North division is something of a group of death – outstanding performance by Durham today and astonishing bowling figures from Callum Thorp 10-3-14-1 !
On the subject of the 93 Natwest Final, I couldn’t remember it so had a look at the scorecard – hadn’t realised they were still bowling 60 overs in those days. And Bill Athey was still playing! Fifteen runs needed off the last over in near darkness, after chasing down a record target and being at one stage 16-2 – that was a tough old Warwickshire side (though I don’t like to admit it).
May 19, 2008 at 08:50 #164306Christ its hard to believe that Pigot played for England…i didnt recall that
Maybe as a one day "specialist" i could have understood, but then again, alot those players (the awful Mtthew Fleming springs to mind) were a complete waste of space
May 19, 2008 at 12:53 #164358Pretty much every county player was in the frame for an England cap in the dark days of the late 80s and 90s. Remember Alan Igglesden? Martin McCague? Chris Cowdrey? Mike Smith? (I could continue at some length but I will refrain)
May 19, 2008 at 13:04 #164362I see your Igglesden et al and raise you Gavin Hamilton. A pair in the match and no wickets for plenty. A retrenchment to the Scotland team – via career oblivion – eventually followed.
I’ve got it in the back of my head that James Boiling – former Surrey and Durham twirler and a man so eccentric as to scare the living cr*p out of David Boon during his tenure at the latter club – got an England cap in the Pigott right-place-right-time style, but it may have only been England A. Must go and check.

May 19, 2008 at 13:11 #164363I am sure that Boiling hasnt played for england
Igglesden wasnt so bad. McCague had talent but the heart (and brain) of a pea. Mike Smith was ok in certain conditions
Cowdrey? right connections
Fleming? Pigot? Right school
May 19, 2008 at 13:18 #164364Gavin Hamilton is a good one. Wasn’t he part of that experimental squad we took to South Africa a few winters back? Seem to remember them being something like 20-5 in one of the Tests.
I’m going to offer Kim Barnett – (ugly technique, ugly guy) and Mark Lathwell.
May 19, 2008 at 13:22 #164367Didnt Barnett on play in ODI’;s?
Lathwell had great talent. A natural. Too early for him maybe but was no Fleming…no way
May 19, 2008 at 13:30 #164370Barnett played in the ill-fated 1989 Ashes. Along with…..Phil Newport, Tim Curtis (Worcester stalwarts both, but not Test cricketers) and a cast of thousands.
Lathwell may or may not have had talent, but his Test career was a failure. Plenty of untalented cricketers have made the most of their opportunities (yer man Strauss is a classic example).
May 19, 2008 at 13:48 #164375Lathwell had great talent. A natural. Too early for him
Agree on all counts, and it’s a shame that he pretty much caved in after that early baptism, never coming close to being the same player even back at County level.
Frightfully delicate these Somerset openers. It must be the diet.

May 19, 2008 at 13:49 #164376There is no doubt that Lathwell had the ability
I wouldnt be so hard on strauss’s ability. At his best his timing can be superb. Reminds me a bit of Robin Smith in his slightly limited range of shots (and hes far better against spin..but who wasnt), but would rather a cricketer had genuine international match ability in a narrow area than in none at all (Fleming)
I like Strauss a lot. But believe hes been fortunate

That was the experiment – to see if a the record low of 46 all out could be broken.

Frightfully delicate these Somerset openers, can you remember the South African Jimmy Cook who was there for about three seasons, he hit over 2000 county championship runs every year, the problem back then was the rest of the team, Cook use to carry the lot of them. Peter Bowler could stick around aswell but it was like watching paint dry. As for Lathwell i loved watching him bat, he went to England and they for some reason tried changing his technique, never the same after that experience must of destroyed him.
