I actually missed the game last night after some previous night’s barbeque related food poisoning had kept me up the previous night and I had only just powered it out till the end of York racing before I fell asleep.
One thing last night proved once again and something Ive noticed all my drinking life and especially when england are playing or parades are going on back home is that patriotism and alcohol mixed seems to bring out the inner dickhead in people.
If I come out of a bar in northern ireland and I hear "The billy boys" or similar being sung, it is inevitable that people are getting their fighting heads on and a dander up the road is usually the best option. Likewise when the world cup (including qualifiers) etc are on you tend to notice a greater level of aggressive drinking and aggressive attitude in england amongst others.
May 16, 2008 at 08:00 #163815Great achievement by Rangers on reaching the final, shame about the result but Zenit are a good side. Rangers or any team hardly ever get credit by other team’s fans look at Liverpool and what they achieved in reaching 2 champions league final’s in 3 season’s all you hear/read is how lucky they were and boring. i hope Rangers go on to win the league this season because in my opinion the team has deserved to be champions.
i personally think the decision on where the final takes place should be decided at say the semi final stage but that makes to much sense for UEFA to work out.

May 16, 2008 at 08:08 #163818IMO any big team, with those sort of numbers, and especially celtic would have done the exact same in a similar situation.
I don’t recall any trouble at the UEFA Cup Final a couple of years ago when Celtic were playing.
It looks like Rangers will escape UEFA sanctions because the incidents took place away from the stadium. What a joke.

2 arrests out of 80000-100000 even got an award from uefa because of it, and celtic lost!!!

By contrast, although it is sometimes suggested that Celtic and Rangers should be allowed to join the Premiership, on last night’s evidence it is difficult to see Rangers surviving a season there. A good defence is important, but only Derby of last season’s Premiership sides looked as poor attack-wise.
as for letting either of them in the Prem, both are huge clubs with an equal huge following if they were let in after a 5-10 years i would expect them to pushing the big four as they would be able to attract big name players the money from TV and sponsership would be a far lot more than they get at present so i think it unfair to compare their teams now and that if they were in Prem, but it aint never going to happen as much as i would love it

Personally, I hope it never happens, but it is mooted from time to time.
A stumbling block (the international footballing authorities might well be another) is the mechanics if it was to be seriously considered. It has been suggested that the two big Scottish clubs should be allowed straight in. Leaving aside the resentment that would arouse in the better Championship sides if promotion from the Championship was limited to one club for a season, if that happened the two clubs’ current level of competence would be important and my view is that Rangers, especially, wouldn’t last.
Yes, if either Celtic or Rangers could stay in the Premiership for several years, they’d probably do very well. With the their fan bases and the tv/sponsorship they’d get they’d be as wealthy as probably any of the 14 established Premiership sides, save possibly Man. United and Chelsea. But so what? If say the just promoted West Bromwich Albion were guaranteed five years in the Premiership they’d be able to invest and would, I am sure, be a serious top ten Premiership side by 2012. But as things are they will probably stuggle to survive the coming season, as investing all the resources they’ll get from being in the Premiership is a huge gamble which, if it comes unstuck, can spell disaster for a club. And even £30-40m doesn’t go far when it comes to buying players of proven Premiership quality.
We saw the two strategies in action this year with Sunderland (who did invest fairly heavily) and Derby (who didn’t). Sunderland survived, but it was a close run thing. At least Derby (like Watford the year before) haven’t ruined their finances and can hopefully look forward to a decent season in the Championship.
May 16, 2008 at 09:39 #163851i had a work mate who said when i told him Keano spent 50million this season and was only 3 points over the drop zone…"well he must be a crap manager to spend that amount of money and only be 3 points above trap door" needless to say he aint got a clue but it just shows the difference between the championship & settled teams in the Prem, the fact that he had to spend that much to survive how much more before he can make top 10 and so on & so on i think Keane did a great job and if to put money on it would bet they stay up as long as he is there…

david you sound very bitter, why is it a joke? it seems you would like to see Rangers punished, do you get off on things like this? there was no trouble inside the ground so the decision is correct, it has also been pointed out but no-one really wants to believe that there were casuals from certain english teams in amongst the Rangers fans too, now whether thats true or not I don’t know but one thing is for certain no-one wants to believe it as that would be too simple for the media.
May 16, 2008 at 12:05 #163877Jim – I’m not bitter, just my opinion that’s all.
But surely you have to admit that that type of violence/rioting/behaviour deserves some sort of sanction.
UEFA are dodging the issue, just as they have in the past with the England football team.
It’s effectively a licence for fans to destroy a foreign city, provided they behave themselves for 2 hours inside the stadium.
May 16, 2008 at 12:13 #163879david, it really sounds like you want Rangers to be punished, a minority of fans’ behaved in a way that has brought the club down and the majority of Rangers fans are annoyed to say the least by this, I know as I’m a member of the biggest Rangers forum on the internet and that’s all I’ve been reading for the past few days, Rangers are trying to get to the bottom of the problem and so are the fans but it doesn’t help when there are those that don’t know a lot about the situation (except for what is said in the press) wanting them punished. It wasn’t all doom and gloom as there were thousands of other Rangers fans that behaved impeccably but there is no reports on this, I ask myself why, probably because niceness doesn’t sell papers or make great news.
May 16, 2008 at 12:23 #163881Yes Jim I would like to see Rangers punished, preferably forced to play next years European home matches behind closed doors. I’m not necessarily asking that they be kicked out of Europe for an undefined period just as all English clubs were banned from competition for several years due to the behaviour of a minority of Liverpool supporters in 1985.
Of course you are right that good behaviour doesn’t make the news – and why should it.
Ruling bodies cannot continue to stand by while the minority of fans ruin occasions for others.
May 16, 2008 at 12:56 #163891Good things should make the news as the world’s not all bad you know, it’s just the way it is as people like reading scandal – it sells papers.
I’m glad you admitted that you’d like to see Rangers punished as that tells me a lot and it was the answer I was looking for as for playing home matches behind closed doors? no chance why should we there is never any trouble at Ibrox.
Sorry to disappoint you david but none of your wished will be granted, you’ll just have to keep buying the papers
May 16, 2008 at 13:09 #163893Jim
Just because I want to see Rangers punished doesn’t necessarily mean I don’t like the club per se – I like to see bad behaviour punished just as Roma were punished when Mr Frisk was struck by a coin? during a home match a few seasons back.
Unfortunately clubs HAVE to be held responsible for their fans actions, otherwise we will end up in a situation whereby away supporters are banned from attending matches at all and nobody wants to see that.
This constant trotted-out line of "a small minority of fans" is a bit of a joke – there are plenty of fans who could identify these "small minority" but what will be done about it. Nothing.

This thinly-disguised sectarianism has been noted, JTS.

I think the signing of Jones saved Sunderland’s season. Before that they were in serious danger of relegation. The buying policy did seem a case of throwing a number of darts at the board and hoping one hit the bullseye – fortunately with Jones it did.

May 16, 2008 at 20:19 #163947Keane has NOT done a "great" job. Merely adequate…if that
Did Reading spend 50m in their first season up?
If Keanes performance was "great" (a line trotted out by his mates in the media such as the boring Cascarino) then what were Coppell’s achivements?
As for Celtic and rangers coming south…well covered above…not a chance…and i for one would not want to see it
