Actually this takes me back some 30 yrs to stratford races one Saturday.

Me being a fanatic racing enthusiast (my introduction coming via me at 11 yrs of age pre betting shop days being the lookout for an illegal bookmaker you wrote your bet on a woodbine packet and he then clocked the bets) so one could term me as mature student to this forum (I was paid by me having a bet to the tune of two shillings and sixpence i.e, 3x6d doubles and a 6d ew treble) for 3 hrs work no cash only if you won but no monies had to have a bet on the said day, and have been involved in racing ever since 40 plus years.

So you can see by the time in the sport I have seen and heard of plenty of various schemes i’ll call them.

Anyhow going back to Stratford races, a horse won the premier chase of the day at 33-1 and I strolled towards the vets area and got in conversation with the vet, he was doing a dope test (urine sample) on this winner I then asked the vet " do you ever get any tips on these horses?" he replied "if I listen to them I would soon be in the workhouse if I did, see this thing it cant jump a clear round at home according to the trainer" he then said the only time I know who will be trying is down at the gate if I am called there (this was pre mobile phone days only walkie talkies on course then with limited coverage i.e.distance) so no chance of him getting a bet on if he could, but he said I would know who was trying and who was not going to be trying so would no the first three home.

And another thing the ordinary punter do not know (you are all betting blind) is the instructions given to a jockey how to ride the horse whether to try or give it a airing, I have been in the ring with the likes of CARSON EDDERY and various other TOP jocks and the instructions, will quote instructions being "go easy he wont win its his first run back after being injured just give him an airing" now the average betting man dont know that so he bets blind, not knowing the horse as been injured or the instructions that the jockey is given.

Have also been there when the instructions have been" she’s ready give a go she’s at her peak fitness C/D winner she runs 4th of 4, odds on with big bucks placed on her and Eddery getting off saying "the going was against her " it was the going she loved and he was given a few dirty looks I can assure you.

So in summary its a brilliant sport but its also very very chancy and no such thing as a certainty I can speak from my expeirences.
REGARDS MERLIN

Actually a local sucessful trainer MILTON BRADELY has a valid method!!! he disregards breeding traits and runs any horse on its merits he FINDS what the animal does in training so any passed bloodlines are thrown away and HE runs them to the distance that the horse is best at and if one thinks logically about this it seems by the results in lower class races(has proven by his record) distances are irrelevant based on the dam/sire of any animal that he takes on to train.

N/H by a short head the actual happenings in any given race.

You can do your form analysist but cannot for see what may go wrong or what incident may happen in the race giving the enthusiast that extra bit of excitement.

I also am a big fan of both codes on the flat sand/grass but the said spectacle cannot be beaten just take last weeks FESTIVAL be very difficult to achieve on the flat with one exception, possibly ASCOT as its equal on the flat but in my eyes only second to CHELTS and the GRAND NATIONAL, from a racing prospective not a gamblers view.
!!!!!!!THEY ARE ALL GREAT BUT SOME A LITTLE GREATER THAN THE OTHERS!!!!!
Regards MERLIN

someone who bets in a big way would have made a killing on Saturday you could not oppose the horse(BACHANAL) everything was leaning its way going, jockey, form, but me not being a BIG player now(SAVING IT ALL FOR THE FESTIVAL) had a token bet in the race on Supreme Glory and it gave me a run for my money and was finishing strongly(a good pointer for its ultimate goal THE NATIONAL) but if push comes to shove?(heard that somewhere before??) the choice between the two stable mates on the day of the G/C I would have to go along with MARLBOROUGH out of the two? but we will jump that hurdle??? when we get nearer the day.
regards MERLIN

When betting horses one can not let sentimentallity rule your pocket you come to a decision via your brain not your heart and to me its just the choice of the oppositition ???which one is going to win the C/H because in all honesty the brain tells me it will not be the WONDER HORSE some people rely on STATS,my decision will be,come the day, made by my brain and knowledge, of the equine type, full stop no sentiment here.
regards MERLIN

Yes ALSORAN I did HIGHLIGHT my FORTE! NATIONAL HUNT, you cannot base this on relevant times as you will shoot yourself in the foot, but my coments where in relation to N/H not flat/sand/fibre all weather surfaces I think in this case you may be able to work on stats based on times, there was also a major contribution factor that I left out (not on purpose) but I really cant say its a stat? but yes I really suppose it must be brought into the equation and thats Weight/Weight for age and of course allowances of apprentices/conditionals so yes ALSORAN I stand by my previous statements but only on N/HUNT.

When I stated each race must be judged on its merits its exactly that lets be hypothetical and say the forthcoming C/H all at level weights you know ISTABRAQ as won the race 3 times acts on the course so you would think he will be there or there abouts although now getting a bit long in the tooth and falling occasionally you then have a protaganist say LANDING LIGHT a real possible winner judged on his passed performences and with youth on his side C SWAN on one FITZY on the other lets say its a ten horse race whats the betting 2-1 ISTY 7-1 L/L both won at CHELTS as 4yr olds ISTY GOOD TO FIRM if the 2nd home that day had a professional jockey up instead of the permit holders son MIGHTY MOSS would have won,( but thats another story?) L/L runs last JAN as a 4yr old wins by 6 lengths the going SOFT, so you cant make a like for like appraisle but me has a punter, and I now have ex number of £ to bet no monkees or big bets just a workingmans bet I choose L/L @7-1 and have a score on it I really think that this is the value for me the working mans wager. this or these figures are not to be taken as sacre-sanct they are ONLY hyperthetical findings, although would not be far out without actually checking them.
regards MERLIN

NATIONAL-HUNT RACING, I myself do not believe in stats for stats sake people on here go on about certain races ran on the same day I.E. the novices time was 2 seconds faster than the grade 2 race that just took place? dont ever get confused with this type of stat each race MUST be judged on its merits its MORE TACTICAL in any one race than a thing with times, but of course some stats are of tremendous importance,C-D is one that a punter must give a lot of time too, GOING-DISTANCE another but all the other stats are just to keep someone in a job totally irrevelant this is based on my way of gambling NATIONAL HUNT ONLY
Regards MERLIN
