Triptych, are you questioning the Integrity/Judgement of some of the top Trainers in NH Racing? Paul Nicholls, Dan Skelton, Philip Hobbs and Nigel Twiston-Davies? Are you questioning the Integrity/Judgement of the Owners? The Jockies? Are questioning the Integrity/Judgement of the management who run Southwell? The Ground Staff who maintain the Racecourse?
It was said earlier in this thread that “the same thing would happen at Haydock if it had racing in the Summer” Well the Ground today was described as Good to Soft (soft in places) I watched the racing at Southwell today and there seemed to be cut in the Ground! So it can’t of been the GROUND so oh it must be the fences then yes?
It seems to me that what you are advocating for the NH Racing is death by a thousand cuts, shut down Southwell as a NH Track, Horses will then race elsewhere and then what?
All Sports (not just NH racing) are under threat through the madness, the wetness of risk aversion. You educate people about RISK you don’t cushion them that life has no risk.

RISK! what do we think of risk? It’s a complicated question with so many moving parts.Thought ITV did a great job first day back at school, Luke Harvey is very underrated, Chapman is the right beast for the betting ring and (better get the spelling right) Chamberlin (a little stiff necked) will grow into the job as he came over quite confident and really for the most part he needs to learn to bounce of Harvey and McCoy or whoever his side kicks are on the day.
The only thing that should be banned is the Whip rule itself!
It’s not even a whip (in the old sense and make) it’s a pro cushion.
The rule is a half baked,cobbled together compromise with not a shred of common sense attached to it only serving to prove that the body who introduced this rule showed only one attribute – incompetence.
Racing is missing a fantastic marketing opportunity.
Most people have hobbies or favoured pass times, some people like to have a night out with friends at a their chosen Restaurant but the restaurateur isn’t going to give you 10 meal vouchers to the price you paid for your meal because you happened to pick the best value meal on the menu!
You can go down the pub and have a great evening but the landlord isn’t going to give you 5 drinks to 1 about your chosen beverage!
Whether it’s going to a restaurant, down the pub or going to a concert the point is it costs money and we pay for a good time which is absolutely fine.A day at the races has so much to offer, the sights and sounds, the Horses and Jockeys, the parade ring etc.
Set your budget for the day including having a bet because there is nothing quite like watching your selection passing the winning post in first place and even if you fail to back a winner, you set aside the money in the first place and have witnessed these wonderful beasts in full stride, the Jockeys in action, the bookies shouting the odds or receiving your tote ticket, had a meal and a drink and just maybe it’s your lucky day and you end up with more money in your pocket than you started with, either way it’s a win win situation.There is a case for explaining racing terminology and form, the basics, what do the form figures mean next to the Horses name? What is a Handicap race? What’s a Furlong? What are blinkers and why do some Horses wear them?
All form is subjective, teaching people the information contained within the race program has nothing to do with value it’s about knowledge and enhancing the race-day experience.
Value as a concept is an extremely useful way to engage people in the subject of Odds and their respective percentages, Danny Hall wrote an excellent book entitled “ How to Win on the Horses”, at the back of the book (Appendix E) is a chart called the “Expected Value Grid” it poses the question- if a race were able to be run under identical conditions 10 times, how many times would you expect the Horse you are interested in to win the race?
It’s a simple entry point into an individual’s view of what constitutes Value.
If anything racing has suffered from successive Government’s failing to teach children even the basics of probability and risk management but that’s another subject.
Fractions are shown as 14/1, the decimal equivalent is 15.00.
9/4 in fractions (9+4 =13, divide 13 by 4 = 3.25)decimal shows 3.25 just a different way of showing the same price.

That’s not acceptable. I don’t expect horses to be killed in this sport. It should be possible to run a Grand National that doesn’t have horses dying every other year. And if it isn’t possible, then the race ought to be shut down.
I’m far from an animal-rights activist, but I don’t take the deaths of horses (and the injuries/deaths of jockeys) lightly.

Am sure there will be changes as they look to find the right format and presenters but well done to Channel 4 for promoting the race so well.
Given any subject regardless of points of view and whatever angle people come from, there is always a process of emotional attachment that comes with the opinion formed (in this case the National) a perspective once formed is incredibly hard to let go of, much easier to form a pseudo-debate selecting words that in reality serve only to re-enforce ones point of view.
Brian Clough was once asked how he dealt with a player he had an issue with, he replied something along these lines-

– Clough was being extremely honest regardless of any rights or wrongs of a particular situation.
Where would we be without the self-appointed guardians? The superior beings! So superior they can’t even be honest with themselves that a point of view is fixed like concrete (that stands for every side of the debate) only they dress up like Wolves in sheep’s clothing under the cheap pretence of “a debate”
And as for extremism, if one honestly believes extremism comes solely packaged in overt direct action that can be nicely stamped by political leaders and the media, well how to put it politely, a simplistic view.
People could choose to vote with their feet and not attend or watch a sport but there again how could they? Holding as they do (in their mind) the high moral ground.
