Camelot won, beating the other horses in the race. Quickened nicely and left them for dead. Joseph said the horse didn’t come down the hill at all, so not a bad performance at all.

Would the result have been different? We’ll never know. However, there was no reason that the last couldn’t have been jumped. The injured parties, and I hope they recover, were on the inside and one was off the track. Blocking the rails side of the fence would have been no problem. They had a lap to do it.

Atrocious stuff and I would be annoyed if I’d had money on the runner up. The fence might have made a difference, might not I know but… Jumping is the name of the game and the best jumper in the field lost a possible advantage.

Commentary on the race was shocking. Scotsirish was favurite and when he pulled up, clearly seen at the back of the field, Holt ignored it. He was favourite, no excuse! Same of Gardech. Watching the race I clearly saw Nina Carberry in trouble and pulling up. But once again Holt didn’t see or ignored it.
Poor performance by Simon ‘Hyperbole’ Holt.

Sad for the horses and all concerned.

    Motive is important. Surely?

As I stated, I’m a racing fan. Is that not enough motivation to post on this topic on a horseracing forum?

I stated an opinion, one you disagree with. Ok, Irrelevant?

Yes, irrelevant. And slightly insulting to be honest.

Why feel the need to psycho analyse when there’s plenty enough to debate about?

You are a horseracing fan so therefore no other motive could be possible. They are of course mutually exclusive.

Seriously though, if you were insulted by my comments, I am sorry. That was not my intention. I was just commenting with my opinions and trying to understand why others might hold their viewpoint. I guess I naively thought I could do that on a horse racing forum.

P.S. I loved the gap between psycho and analyse. Very funny and very clever. Made me actually laugh out loud. Keep up the good work and happy punting.

Motive is important. Surely? However, since I don’t, nor have any reason to, doubt that you are a fan of horseracing and your motives are in the interest of the game, I say fair enough.

I stated an opinion, one you disagree with. Ok, Irrelevant? Your opinion. Immature? Condescending. But I don’t believe motive is irrelevant at all. So, fine. We disagree, no problem. How’s that for maturity?

This issue seems to have upset a lot of people. Pocket talk perhaps or personal animosity towards the rider in question. Related?

And it appears many have taken the stewards decision personally. Agree or disagree, that is your right, but the fact remains, as spelled out by a more erudite poster than myself, the rules are as they stand and you have to accept them. You don’t have to like them.

Spencer should have been banned. No question, but would the second or third have won the race? That is not so clear and therefore, whatever our opinions, they could not and did not disqualify the winner.

Mike Cattermole makes Derek Thompson look like a cantankerous, critical misanthrope. But it’s his job to talk everything up.

I do think he could be more discriminating though. Saying it was the ‘Best ever’ is nothing short of nonsense.

I fail to understand the reasons people believe the stewards should have taken the race from Spencer. (A lot anti-Spencer sentiment around perhaps.) Doesn’t the rule say something about punishing riders, not horses or connections? The horse was by far the winner on merit and was never going to lose that race. Was he suspended? If not, he should have been. He deserved a week at least for that riding performance, but on the other hand he was scrubbing the horse form the get go and still won with him.

Bottom line is, the horse was the best on the day and the stewards were correct in allowing him keep the race. Spencer should receive a lengthy suspension though.

As for the JQ Guineas… Again the stewards got it right. The horse finished in front by a hair and carried the eventual winner across the track. How anyone could say that it didn’t cost the ‘runner-up’ at least a head is surely talking through his pocket or just through sympathy for the ‘Ah! Poor owner".

Why isn’t Haggis writing to the bookies asking them to increase their levy contributions? That’s a major problem in racing and one that never seems to be properly addressed by trainers or "acronyms".

Bookies depend on racing more than racing depends on them.

Rubbish, rubbish and rubbish. I hate the BBC coverage of racing and the Derby coverage was nothing less than rubbish too.

Rishi, stop! Whatever it is you do, just stop! What does it mean to you…? You are awful and should not be presenting on a racing programme.

I know some say the show is aimed at a dumbed down audience or a non-racing audience, but I don’t care. They don’t do this with other shows do they? Well, the dumbing down, yes but the other? They don’t aim MOTD at a non-football audience.

Persh, not a misspelling, just a more appropriate spelling. I cannot stand the guy.

    Balding, aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!

CH4 are better but Mike Cattermole or whatever…now he should be on the BBC. Perfect for them. Obseqious(spelling?) Thommo move aside they have found your replacement.

    Rant over, time for bed.

Pour Moi was the best horse on the day. Carlton House has no valid excuse.

The shoe falling off, half a furlong from home? CH was never getting past Treasure Beach anyway.

He had to come a long way round? The winner followed his path through and still went past him as though he were standing still.

The winner will beat CH every time. CH is a a very good animal though and will win his share, as long as PM is not in the field.

Personally think that Germany will feel they have drawn the short straw getting England in the next round.

I agree, few teams will want to play England, but that’s because of the name and the "potential", rather than ability. They got the result they needed last night against a team that were woeful. (Slovenia have been unexciting to say the least.) So, job done. Result is what matters, isn’t it? I wouldn’t get too carried away though.

They could beat Germany but, like many England -Germany games I believe it will be tight.

However, don’t think England or Germany, for that matter, are good enough to win the tournament. Would look to Argentina, Spain or Brazil or even Holland to do that.

But the USA to reach the semi-finals. I believe they have the passion, desire and team spirit to overcome Ghana and, I expect, Uruguay in the quarters.

Coolmore 3-year-olds not so good this year? You may be proven correct.
However, I recall people saying that about their horses last year, yet without Sea The Stars, they would have won a few more Group 1 races.

Workforce looked like a good horse in winning and we can only look forward to him repeating or even improving on that performance.

Might as well give my tuppence worth… Just what I think from what I have seen so far.

SNA should win the race if he is anything like the 2YO we saw at the backend last year. An earlier post made a great point about the Guineas winner needing to see out farther , well SNA is expected to be able to do that.
I also like Fencingmaster. Lovely run in the Dewhurst and looks like one who has more to offer. Perhaps over a longer trip though.

Canford Cliffs will obviously be ridden differently than last time. Can’t ever see him getting more than a mile so, I don’t expect him to win. I expect him to be close too and to reverse the form with Dick Turpin.

I am looking forward to this race and feel the winner could be a very good horse (or colt if one wants to be pedantic).

Don’t count your chickens… Hopefully, the union will bear another star. We should wait and see.

This is such a special era coming up for Horse Racing, have we ever had it this good?
Just makes you happy when you goto sleep every night knowing whats around the corner in a few years.

As for lying in bed thinking about the copulating of two horses…not my cup of at all.

I thought the commentary team was generally poor for the National this year. Jim McGrath should be retired to stud. I’m afraid he is past it now. I am glad he didn’t say "pozzie" though. How I hate that. During the Pendle’s Cross race he said that the eventual winner was starting to be be niggled along. The jockey was statuesque on him. It sounds as though he has a list of phrases and expressions in front of him that he feels obliged to shoehorn into commentaries.

Bartlett is awful, I feel sleepy whenever he starts droning on. He missed the fall of last year’s winner for heaven’s sake. He called it a fence later.

Claire Balding??? I am convinced she is going to start with the phrase, now boys and girls … She would be better employed on CBBC. Adults are watching Claire. Please treat them as such. I guess some might say it’s because she is trying to make racing more accessible to those who don’t know much about it but frankly, she’s a female Thommo. Happy all the time and everything is always wonderful. Patronizing and condescending.

Wiltshire and Parrot. Someone shoot them. Wiltshire says nothing of interest and Parrot is just an amiable scouser who likes a punt, so therefore in the great tradition of dumbing down, he’s the BBC’s everyman.

Anyway, enjoyed the race and it was wonderful that AP won the race. I just felt sorry for him, after negotiating thirty fences he had to deal with the inane, vacuos Rishi, "So how does it feel?…
